突撃レポート!一歩先行くOCR技術
みなさんOCRという言葉を耳にしたことはあるでしょうか。
今回はテクテク取材班がEXPOで見つけた、OCRを知っている方も知らない方も、驚く最新のOCR技術をご紹介します。
そもそもOCRとは何か?
今回発見した技術を紹介する前に、まずはOCRについてご説明します。
OCR (Optical Character Reader)とは、光学式文字認識のことを指します。簡単に説明すると、紙や印字された文字を読み取り、文字データとして出力する技術のことです。

皆さんの身近な所でいうと、EvernoteやGoogleドライブにも実はこの機能は搭載されています。
この2つはファイルアップの際に設定をすると、画像をデジタルデータ化した状態でテキストを保存してくれます。
どちらも標準機能で搭載されているので、この記事を読んで気になった方は試してみるといいかもしれません。

OCRと自動翻訳を利用して、タブレットやスマートフォンをかざすだけで、現地の文字を翻訳してくれるというデモアプリです。

筆者がなぜこのアプリに注目したかといえば、実際にデモ機で体験させてもらった際に、自分で文字を読んでいる感覚を覚えたからでした。

The reason why I focused on this application is, I felt like almost as I'm reading the letters by myself when I experienced this application on demo-device.

Speaking of why the author focused on this application is feeling a sense of reading a letter on your own when I was allowed to experience a demo machine in real.

翻訳の速度について担当者に伺ったところ、このような回答が得られました。
「まだ長文になると文字の認識率と翻訳の精度に課題は残っていますが、現段階では翻訳にかかるまでの時間の短縮に注力しています。」

と話していただきました。

翻訳までのプロセスを省略
また、この技術の着目すべき点は、写真を保存する必要がないということ。
主流になっているものは、写真を撮影し、その画像をアプリに読み込んでデータ化するものですが、このアプリでは端末をかざしてカメラの焦点が合った文字をその場で翻訳してくれるため、ユーザーの手間が大きく省略されています。
ユーザー目線で技術を追求するこのアプリが製品として登場に期待です!

The ordinal technology is the one, you take photo, and let an application read the image to convert the data. This application, however, translates the letter immediately just after focused on it so that it omits the user's operation.
