突撃レポート！一歩先行くOCR技術
みなさんOCRという言葉を耳にしたことはあるでしょうか。
今回はテクテク取材班がEXPOで見つけた、OCRを知っている方も知らない方も、驚く最新のOCR技術をご紹介します。
そもそもOCRとは何か？
今回発見した技術を紹介する前に、まずはOCRについてご説明します。
OCR (Optical Character Reader)とは、光学式文字認識のことを指します。簡単に説明すると、紙や印字された文字を読み取り、文字データとして出力する技術のことです。

スキャンや写真撮影したjpg画像やPDFから文字をデジタルデータ化する機能も存在します。
どうやって使うのか？
皆さんの身近な所でいうと、EvernoteやGoogleドライブにも実はこの機能は搭載されています。
この２つはファイルアップの際に設定をすると、画像をデジタルデータ化した状態でテキストを保存してくれます。
どちらも標準機能で搭載されているので、この記事を読んで気になった方は試してみるといいかもしれません。
既存技術の組み合わせで一歩先行く先端技術

さて、OCR技術についてご理解いただけた所で、今回発見した技術についてご紹介したいと思います。
この技術を展示していたのは、大手電機メーカー。
OCRと自動翻訳を利用して、タブレットやスマートフォンをかざすだけで、現地の文字を翻訳してくれるというデモアプリです。
ストレスを感じない翻訳
筆者がなぜこのアプリに注目したかといえば、実際にデモ機で体験させてもらった際に、自分で文字を読んでいる感覚を覚えたからでした。

That is a demo-application which automatically translate just by holding your tablet or smart phone over a paper or printed characters by using OCR and the machine translation technology.

The reason why I focused on this application is, I felt like almost as I'm reading the letters by myself when I experienced this application on demo-device.
常に画像を認識しにいっており、読み取った上で翻訳しても、この速度を維持していることに注目しました。
速度にこだわる
翻訳の速度について担当者に伺ったところ、このような回答が得られました。
「まだ長文になると文字の認識率と翻訳の精度に課題は残っていますが、現段階では翻訳にかかるまでの時間の短縮に注力しています。」
I want to note that this application always tries to recognize image so that it keeps this speed even it translate after scanning the data.
Focus on particularly speed.
I asked about the speed to a person in charge and got the following reply.
"Even though it still has a problem about the recognition rate and translate accuracy when it comes to a long sentence, we focus on shortening the translation speed for now."
具体的な販売プランなどは未定だが、将来的には
「海外旅行に行く人にこのアプリを使用してほしい。今の状態でも街中にある短文であれば高い精度で翻訳出来るので、ぜひ使ってもらいたい。このアプリで言葉の壁が少しでも解消できれば」
と話していただきました。

翻訳までのプロセスを省略
また、この技術の着目すべき点は、写真を保存する必要がないということ。
主流になっているものは、写真を撮影し、その画像をアプリに読み込んでデータ化するものですが、このアプリでは端末をかざしてカメラの焦点が合った文字をその場で翻訳してくれるため、ユーザーの手間が大きく省略されています。
ユーザー目線で技術を追求するこのアプリが製品として登場に期待です！

Most applications requires to take a picture, then load the picture into the application and converted to data documentation. On the other hand, this application lets your device camera focused on the letters on a object, and translate it immediately. This must save lots of time for users.
This application will be always think about the future on users' side, and we are very looking forward to introducing this product to the market!
