Zaker: The News-Readin’, Page-Flippin’ Flipboard Clone [REVIEW]

Most successful international apps have a group of Chinese imitators. The success of magazine-style news-reading app Flipboard has brought with it many such Chinese “brothers,” such as Fruit, Netease reader, and perhaps the most popular of them all, Zaker. To commemorate its growing acclaim this year, it’s time to give it a mini-review.

世界的に最も人気のあるアプリには、常にそれを真似た一群の中国版が存在する。雑誌形式でニュースを読むアプリのFlipboard(フリップボード）が成功したことで、そういった中国の「姉妹アプリ」が登場している。その「姉妹アプリ」にはFruitやNetease readerなどがあるが、おそらく最も人気があるのはZakerであろう。今年、そのZakerの評判が伸びていることを賞賛するために、ささやかなリビューをしてみたいと思う。

Zaker is made by Dooland, a web company founded in 2007, and has separate versions for iPhone and iPad. Like Flipboard – which got blocked in China back in May of this year – it carefully grabs news and interesting articles from numerous sources – from microblogs such as Weibo, blogs, news sites, and magazines, and updates in real time. Users can add their own sources via RSS and Google Reader.

As a reading app, Zaker has done much to improve the reading experience. Pages are turned with the same motion you would use to turn pages in a real magazine. Also, Zaker makes use of social networks such as Sina Weibo to allow you to share what you’re perusing.

Zaker(扎客）は2007年に設立されたウェブ企業のDooland（読覧）によって開発され、iPhone用とiPad用に別々のバージョンがある。Flipboard（中国では今年の５月にブロックされた）と同様に、微博などのマイクロブログやブログ、ニュースサイト、雑誌やリアルタイムの最新情報など数多くの情報源からニュースや興味深い記事を入念に取り上げている。ユーザーはRSSやグーグルリーダーを通じて独自の情報源を加えることもできる。

Zakerは、ニュースアプリとしての読む環境を向上させるために色々と改良を行なってきた。Zakerでは本当の雑誌をめくるような感覚でページをめくることができ、また新浪微博のようなソーシャルネットワークを利用して、ユーザーが読んでいるニュースや記事などを共有することもできるようにしている。

When you login to Zaker, it’s a bit like a Twitter or Weibo app, with vertical scrolling to browse content. You can click on any link and read the news or watch the videos directly in the app. Clicking on the screen in the upper right corner lets you send a new tweet (to Weibo, I mean). You can favourite, retweet, and comment on any tweets you like inside Zaker, making it into a sort of satellite social network. Also, when you write and send your tweet, you can directly use the camera to take pictures.

Chen Chi-he, the CEO of Dooland, believes its advantage lies in the content. About 300 newspapers, 800 general news websites, and many magazines have cooperated with them in agreeing to aggregate content. Talking to Chinese tech site Hexun, he said:

"Copyright risk is what we questioned about Flipboard’s model, so we have to consider that fully by establishing a good relationship with the content side [...] We will try to combine with e-commerce, LBS, and games. But at this stage, what we should do first is build a user base."

In China, on a subway or bus, you often see people reading while commuting. The market for such readers will surely only get bigger here, especially as Apple and its iOS gadgets grow in popularity in China. Perhaps Zaker will lead the reading revolution here.

China’s Top 20 Daily Deals Sites – and Who Has the Hottest Deals?

In updated stats from group buy deal aggregator DaTaoTuan which go right up to the end of August, we get a new snapshot of China’s frantic and fragmented daily deals segment. Last time we checked, earlier this summer, we saw Tencent’s QQ Tuan was the king in terms of both market share and revenue.

This time round we see the top 20 deal sites in the country, and also get a good sense of who’s creating – and selling – the most successful packages. Note that DaTaoTuan didn’t scrape revenue figures this time.

今回は、中国のトップ２０のサイト、そしてどのサイトが一番人気ある商品やサービスを提供し販売しているのかを見てみよう。今回、大淘団は収益データに手を加えていない。

China’s Group Buy Top 20

The market share in China, by revenue, up to the end of August (pictured above) shows that Tencent is still the leader. Below QQ Tuan, however, it’s still a choppy sea of rough competition. Meituan has slipped from second place in June to fourth in August; Manzuo from its third ranking down to fifth; 24Quan from fourth to eighth; and FTuan – which bagged US$60 million in funding this week – from sixth to tenth.

We were surprised to see that 55Tuan – whom we recently saw being sued by a comedian for using his image without permission – rose from ninth to be ranked second behind Tencent.

It’s a certain kind of magic that makes a daily deal into a top seller – and sadly no-one quite knows how to perform the trick at will. But DaTaoTuan does know that a successful deal not only sells like hot cakes, but also brings in 48 times more revenue than the average package, and has a lower than average discount:

Some group buy sites seem to have the knack for creating those well-received deals. Dianping, Nuomi, and Manzuo are the top three sites in this respect. Here’s a breakdown of who’s creating the top deals in August:

It’s interesting to see that big names like Lashou and Gaopeng do so badly at this, suggesting an alarming amount of deals being poorly received and struggling to sell on their sites.

The company was co-founded by the former COO of Globis, a private MBA schooling company in Tokyo. Japanese legendary techpreneur Kiyoshi Nishikawa (the founder of NetAge) is also involved in the board of directors. During the past few months we’ve heard from some of the company’s team that they are developing the alpha version of some cloud-related apps, but no further details are available at this point. We’ll keep you posted if we hear anything.
