Facebook Overtakes Cyworld in Korea?

A recent report in The Korea Times is indicating that Facebook has overtaken the nation’s dominant social network Cyworld in terms of monthly visitors.

The article cites metrics from Rankey.com which says that Cyworld Mini Hompy saw 15.9 million visitors in August, down from 18 million the previous month. Some of you may recall that Cyworld was hacked back on July 26th. Though it seems the network’s decline started well before that, with a number of failed efforts to expand beyond Korea’s borders and increasing competition from other services.

The Korea Timesが最近報道した記事では、フェイスブックが月間訪問者数で韓国の大手ソーシャルネットワークのサイワールドを追い抜いたことを示している。

その記事は、サイワールドのミニホムピィ(Mini Hompy)の8月の訪問者数は1590万人で前月の1800万人から減少したと報告するRankey.comの調査を引用している。サイワールドが去る7月26日にハッキングされたのを思い出す人もいるだろう。だが、海外進出を計ろうとした多くの取組みが失敗に終わり、と同時にその他のサービスとの競争が増えていることを考えれば、サイワールドの人気減少はそれよりもずっと以前に始まっていたように見える。

One of those competing services is Facebook, which is reported to have grown 16 times on the previous year to 16.3 million visitors last month, surpassing Cyworld (see below).


But social metrics are always tricky to nail down, and looking at user base figures indicates that Facebook still has a long way to go. In comparison with Cyworld’s 25 million users, Facebook only has about 4 million to date (according to Social Bakers). If the Korean Herald report is any indication, many of Cyworld’s users are likely inactive ones. One user explains:

Meanwhile, Facebook is making other inroads in Asia with a new office in Singapore to focus on sales and partnerships. There’s still no word on any China plans however, so don’t hold your breath on that front.

According to Kyocera, this new touch panel “uses vibration to excite the nerves in the finger to illicit a quasi tactile feeling.” The screen uses a piezoelectric element to create this tactile feeling.

Of course, one of the current knocks against many of today’s touchscreen devices is that they lack a tactile feeling. My personal pet peeve is the virtual keyboard on an iPad, which I find tricky to use. Whether or not a technology like this could actually improve that experience is not clear to me, but I have my fingers crossed that someday it might

もちろん、今日使われている数多くのタッチスクリーン機器に対する不満の１つは触感がないというものだ。私個人的に厄介だと感じているのはiPadのバーチャルキーボードで、使いにくいと感じている。京セラのこのようなテクノロジーが実際にそういった経験を改善できるかどうかは私には分からないが、いつかそうなることを願っている。

Kyocera’s Demos Tactile Feedback Touchscreen Buttons at CEATEC [VIDEO]

When we visited Kyocera at CEATEC Japan last week, we had a chance to try out the company’s ‘New Feeling Touch Panel.’ It’s a haptic feedback touchscreen that makes pressing a flat surface feel like pushing a regular button.

The demonstration included a variety of buttons, such as a jelly type, clickable, or buzzer style buttons. The buttons can also be assigned levels of depths, meaning that you could do a half push or a full push with two assigned levels. In the demo we saw (see video below) we got to try seven levels of depth, which was amazingly cool.

先週行なわれたCEATEC Japan（シーテックジャパン）で京セラのブースを訪れた時、同社の「新感覚タッチパネル」を試す機会を得た。それは、触感フィードバックのタッチスクリーンで、平らな表面を押しているのに通常のボタンを押しているような感覚が得られるというものだ。

実演では、ぷるぷる震えるボタンやクッリクタイプ、ブザーのようなボタンなど様々なボタンがあった。ボタンを押す深さを設定することができるようで、例えば、半押しや全押しの2種類を設定することもできる。私達が見た実演（下のビデオを参照）では、７段階の深さを試すことができて本当に面白かった。

As for American social media, we’re getting very mixed messages, with SNS IPOs both gaining the most (LinkedIn (NYSE:LNKD)) and failing the hardest (that’s you, FriendFinder (NYSE:FFN)). Clearly that’s due to judgements on their ability to monetize, or the value to advertisers of their users.

It’s such a poor economic climate right now, it’s possible that only one further Chinese company will float in New York this year – the e-commerce platform Vancl, which aims to raise as much as US$1 billion.

But with some fearing that “a winter is coming” for tech companies in China, it might be too early to gauge who truly won or lost in 2011.

Zynga’s Project Z Network No Threat to Facebook For Now

Zynga’s newly-christened “Project Z” (or “Zynga Direct,” to hear CEO Mark Pincus tell it) is a forthcoming social games platform and social network enabled through Facebook Connect. It is also, some say, Zynga’s bid for independence from Facebook — but the details of the platform don’t support the claim any more than Zynga’s own behavior in the past year.

新しく名付けられたZyngaの「Project Z」(もしくは、CEOの Mark Pincus氏が呼ぶには「Zynga Direct」）は、まもなく登場するソーシャルゲームプラットフォームであるとともに、「Facebook Connect」を通じて可能になるソーシャルネットワークである。「Project Z」がZyngaのFacebookからの自立を企てるものだという人もいるが、そのプラットフォームの詳細を見れば、「Project Z」がその意見を立証するものではないのは昨年のZyngaの動きからも同様のことが言える。

For nearly two years, the world has been watching for signs of trouble in the relationship between one of the world’s largest social networks and its largest third-party developer. Seventeen months ago, there were spats about Facebook Credits integration, sudden platform changes that curbed viral growth for social games, and even rumored threats that Zynga would quit the platform.

およそ2年近くの間、世界最大手のソーシャルネットワークの１つであるFacebookとその最大手の外部ディベロッパーZyngaとの関係が崩れる、もめごとの兆しに世界は注目してきた。17か月前、「Facebook Credits」の一本化に対して小競り合いがあった。それは突然のプラットフォームの変更で、ソーシャルゲームのバイラル的な成長を抑制し、さらにはZyngaがそのプラットフォームを辞めるかもしれないという脅しの噂まであった。

Since that time, however, Zynga has gone on to launch four more social games for Facebook, as well as a series of mobile games that leverage Facebook Connect. True, the company also launched an off-Facebook player reward network and put some of its games on Google’s competing social network games platform. But in all this time, Zynga hasn’t actually done anything to cut ties with Facebook.

だが、Zyngaはそれ以降、Facebook向けに4つのソーシャルゲームや「Facebook Connect」を利用した一連のモバイルゲームを導入し続けている。ZyngaがFacebook以外のゲームプレイヤーを報いるネットワークを開始したり、同社のゲームを競合しているGoogleのソーシャルネットワークプラットフォームに導入したことも事実ではある。しかし、Zyngaが実際にFacebookとの提携を崩すようなことは、これまで何一つ行なっていない。

If anything, the ties are deepening as Zynga prepares an initial public offering based mostly on the strength of its revenues from Facebook players. According to statements made by Pincus and Zynga COO John Schappert at today’s Unleashed event in San Francisco, Project Z is enabled with Facebook Connect at a level of integration so deep that Facebook is actually a “launch partner” for the network. Zynga also supported Facebook’s launch of its mobile platform with three HTML5 games based on its most popular franchises. And with each new game release, Zynga seems to showcase more and more of Facebook’s newest social game features well before other social game developers even begin to experiment with them.

Even if Project Z launched tomorrow and Zynga’s IPO were delayed into Q2 2012, the idea that Zynga could somehow be completely independent of Facebook by that time is ridiculous. Facebook is Zynga’s primary source of traffic and no other social network or games portal in the United States is in a position to cut Zynga any kind of deals that would yield comparable numbers. There is the idea that Facebook could abruptly change its terms of service with social game developers in a way that would hurt Zynga’s revenues — but why would Facebook do that when it has spent the last year trying to rebuild and nurture its social games ecosystem?

たとえ「Project Z」のサービスが明日始まっても、ZyngaのIPOは2012年の第2四半期まで延期されたであろう。ZyngaがどうにかしてそれまでにFacebookから完全に自立するというのは、とんでもない考えだ。FacebookはZyngaにとってトラフィックを獲得する主要源で、Zyngaもしくはそれに匹敵するような数字を産み出すようなビジネスを切り捨てられるソーシャールネットワークもしくはゲームポータルはアメリカにはない。FacebookがZyngaの収益を損なうような方法でソーシャルゲームのディベロッパーとのサービス利用規約を突然変えるという考えもあるが、ソーシャルゲームのエコシステム（生態系）を再構築し育成するのに去年１年を費やしたFacebookが、どうしてそんなことをするだろうか？
