Is it legal to use Bitcoin in Singapore?

Yes. The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has stated that they do not regulate virtual currencies, and businesses may accept Bitcoin as a means of payment. MAS does warn that since there is no counterparty for Bitcoin, if they cease to be used they will lose their value. However, in my opinion, unlike a traditional means of stored value, there is no central backer to go bankrupt or nation to default or devalue it. Bitcoin is decentralized, peer-to-peer, so as long as any shop or other person on the planet accepts it, it will have value.

Once I have Bitcoin, what can I buy with them?

The current number of merchants in Singapore accepting Bitcoin is still small, but growing. You can also use your Bitcoin to purchase gift cards to use at places like Amazon and other large retailers. (Visit gyft.com). Because of the low fees, many gaming sites are now offering Bitcoin as a means of payment, with a particular focus on micropayments. Is it an investment, or savings vehicle?

Yes, it can be both. But it is risky to buy Bitcoin and hold them as an asset class. There are a fixed number of Bitcoin that will ever be mined. It’s capped at 21 million, with about 12 million currently available, and the rest to be mined over the next 100 years. It is deflationary in nature since demand is steadily increasing. This means that all things being equal, the value of a Bitcoin should rise relative to fiat (government issued) currencies. However, all things aren’t equal, and the price at which you buy Bitcoin may be at a high or low point during a correction.

We’ve seen several run-ups and drops over the past few years. I would not recommend putting a large amount of a portfolio into Bitcoin as an investment. That being said, as a long tail, black swan bet, I am comfortable with about a 1% allocation. Bitcoin are not controlled by any central government or bank, they cannot be seized if properly stored. (Unlike savings in banks in Cyprus, other EU governments are starting to write laws allowing them to do ‘bail-ins’.)

While this is what makes for good headlines, it is clearly not true. 0.5% of Bitcoin transactions have been shown to be used in the drug trade in comparison to the 1% of worldwide GDP that is the drug trade. 90% of US$100 bills have cocaine on them, and HSBC has paid US$1.9 Billion in penalties for assisting in money laundering. The total market cap for Bitcoin is only US$1.3 billion.

It’s difficult to buy Bitcoin in Singapore.

The current market for Bitcoin in Singapore is still small and not very liquid. The local Singapore exchange FYBSG allows you to buy and sell Bitcoin like a share trading platform. With continued interest the volume of transactions will increase, and the buy/sell spread decrease. Several Singapore based entrepreneurs are also working on ways to help make it easier to buy Bitcoin either online or even using ATM like cash in/Bitcoin out machines.
