Natural swimming pool - Yoggo Valley

Yoggo Valley is situated on the north-east side of the island, in the inner part of the Nagata village encircled by laurel trees. You can reach it in 5 minutes on foot starting from the parking lot.

This is the valley where the giant granite rocks are washed by a river that flows down from the Nagata peak.

上の方はすでに枯れていて、着生樹が多く見られる。
古い巨木を苗床に新しい木が育つ様子は屋久杉の特徴をよく表しています。
屋久杉の古木らしい風格にはまさに翁の名がふさわしいですね。

Presently, the tracks are sometimes used to transport important maintenance materials for managing facilities such as toilets you can find on the mountain path. They are also used to carry old stumps or fallen and buried trees. If you are lucky, you might see one of them.

The deeper parts of Yakushima are a treasure trove of old cedars that can be well over 1.000 years old. This is one of the older ones. The upper part of the tree is already starting to wither and is covered in many epiphytic plants. One of the characteristics of the Yasushima cedars is that the new trees grow on the older, bigger ones. The name "grandpa trees" really suits these ancient plants!

And this is the biggest tree stump in Yasushima!

さらに標高が高くなると、照葉樹の森から屋久杉の森へ。
二代大杉、三本足杉、三本槍杉、びびんこ杉、奉行杉などが有名。
写真にあるのはくぐり杉。
その名の通り、歩道を歩くと杉のトンネルをくぐることが出来ます。

トロッコ道を歩き、いよいよ屋久島の深部へと入って行きます。
トロッコは大正12年に開通し、屋久杉を伐採し里に運んでいましたが、昭和44年に運行を終了しました。

If you go even further up, you'll move from the Terihaju forest right into the Yakushima cedar forest. The famous names of the trees include Nidai Oosugi, Sanponashi Sugi, Sanpon Yari Sugi, Bibinko Sugi and Bugyou Sugi.

The one pictured in the photograph is Kuguri Sugi.

Just like the name indicates, you can pass through a tunnel when following the path ("pass through" is "kuguru" in Japanese).

You can enter the deeper parts of Yakushima after following the trolley path. The trolleys were added in the 12th year of the Taisho era to help the lumberjacks carry the cut down trees to their villages, but they are no longer in use since the 44th year of the Showa era.

The Joumon Sugi cedars are the representative trees of Yakushima. You can see the eternal large trees after climbing your way through remote mountains. We will introduce you to the path right from the mountain trail entrance.

Aiming for the eternal big trees of Yakushima

We will want to reach the Joumon Sugi cedars of Yakushima. Let's try following the hardest of all available paths!

Ladies and gentlemen, let's enter the path that leads to the cedars! This entrance is called Shirataniunsuikyo. It takes about 6 hours to reach the cedars from here. It might be difficult to climb back in the same day, so let's set up a camp!

室生寺の境内を巡る


室生寺の境内を散歩。
山の緑にとけ込むように、歴史を感じさせるお堂が立ち並びます。

その奥、長い石段を上った先に見えるのが、五重塔です。

この五重塔も実は国宝。
日本にある五重塔の中で、屋外に立つものとしては最も小さく、また法隆寺の五重塔に次いで二番目に古い塔なのだそうです。

Also, all other statues in the main hall that aren't considered to be national treasures are important cultural properties. You should go see them with your own eyes.

Taking a walk in the temple grounds of Murouji

There are many old temple halls inside the Murouji grounds. The buildings seem to be melting into the mountain greenery and almost make you feel the echoes of history.

After you reach the inner part of the temple and climb a long path full of stone steps, you will see the five-storied pagoda of Murouji.

It's also one of the national treasures of Japan. It's the smallest of the five-storied pagodas that stand outdoors. It's also the second oldest five-storied pagoda in Japan, right after the one in the Houryuuji complex.

また、水の流れの様に軽やかな衣の衣紋は漣波式（れんばしき）と呼ばれる室生寺独特の模様とされています。

この十一面観音さまの衣も流れるような漣波式（れんばしき）。
室生寺を代表する仏様です。

In the background, you can see the so-called itakouhai that represents a halo that is richly decorated with paintings of colorful foliage scrollwork. The clothes of the statue engulf it like water and the characteristic pattern you can spot on them is called renbashiki and is considered to be a design unique to Murouji.

Jyuuichimen Kannon, the eleven-faced Goddess of Mercy

The other national treasure enshrined in the main temple is the statue of Jyuuichimen Kannon. Her clothes feature the same unique pattern of renbashiki. It's the buddha statue that represents Murouji.

To protect as many people as she can, her head has ten faces.

Murouji is hidden in the deep mountains of Nara. A long time ago, women weren't allowed to enter high hills and fields, but they could visit this temple, and that's how it gained its nickname, "Nyouinkouya", which means "women in high fields".

十一面観音はその名の如く、頭の上に１０の顔を持つ仏様。
この１０の顔で全方位を見渡し、一人として見過ごす事無く助けて下さるのだとか。

Just like the name suggests, this Buddha has 10 faces on her head. She can look in every direction of the world, and help everyone she sees on her own. You can't see it from the front, but she also has faces on the back of her head.

There is only one day in the year you can stand right in front of her feet. Normally you pay your respects from the main hall of the temple, which only shows the upper part of her body. Those who want to stand right next to her feet should pay attention to when the right day comes!

Sendai castle (Sendai city, Miyagi prefecture)

Sendai castle was built by Date Masamune in the Aoba mountains. It's mostly known as Aoba Castle, which could be literally translated as "castle of fresh leaves", and its name is so popular it also appears in songs.

You can also take part in a Christmas season festival called "Okayama Momotaro Matsuri - Momotaro Fantasy-". It's an illumination event that defines the winter season in Okayama.

When nights comes, Okayama turns into a city of illuminations. It's truly an Okayaman style to adorn the Christmas trees with peaches! They represent the legend that Momotaro was born from a peach - which is called "momo" in Japanese.

The best souvenir from Okayama is of course the kibidango Momotaro took with him on his journey. That's why the shops with souvenirs have so many of them. According to a website that specializes in kibidango, there are over 70 types of them!

Okayama's rent-a-cycle system is of course named "Momocharin"

"Community cycle" is a special system of sharing bicycles in Okayama.

In the whole Okayama you can find special "cycle ports" (only for parking Momocharin bicycles) where you can rent and return bicycles. The bicycles can be used by everyone and there are no private bicycles.

You can rent one for 100 yen, or pay 400 yen for a whole day.

There are also special commuter passes.

The streets of Okayama are full of pink flags that read "Okayama, the City of Momotaro".

The blood donation rooms are also called "Momotaro". They can be find in the city centre and belong to the Japanese Red Cross.

2013年末、桃太郎市に改名の報を受け、久しぶりに岡山市へ行ってみました。
岡山駅前には当然『桃太郎』の銅像が
イヌ、サル、キジも一緒

桃太郎のお供である、イヌ、サル、キジも一緒に銅像となっています。
画像の左側にいるのがイヌ、右側がサル、桃太郎の肩に乗っているのがキジです。



市民の電車、岡山電気軌道が誇る低床式電車の名前が『momo』

~How Okayama reached the Momotaro otaku level~

I decided to visit the city after a long time upon hearing in late 2013 that Okayama got named the "city of Momotaro". In front of the Okayama station, you can see a bronze statue of Momotaro and his dog, monkey and pheasant.

The three companions of Momotaro - his dog, monkey and pheasant are a part of the statue. The dog is pictured on the hero's left side, monkey sits on his right side, and his pheasant sits on his shoulder.

The low platform electric trains Okayama is proud of are called "Momo".

The practice street trams also have Momotaro's name on them.
