Samsung takes back global smartphone sales crown from Apple in Q1 2015

Samsung beat out Apple as the biggest vendor of smartphones worldwide in the first quarter of this year, according to research out today from analyst firm Strategy Analytics.

Samsung held 24.1 percent of the vendor market share in the quarter, while Apple had 17.7 percent, according to an article about the report from the firm. In the fourth quarter of 2014 — the holidays — the two mobile device makers were neck and neck, with 19.6 percent market share each, the firm found.

Samsung sells popular Android smartphones like the Galaxy S6 Edge and the Galaxy Note. Apple has been increasingly directing its focus at the Apple Watch.

The smartphone market as a whole grew by 21 percent year over year in the quarter, which is slower than the growth rate in every quarter of 2014, Strategy Analytics is reporting.

KKBox launched in 2005 as an Asian answer to iTunes, wherein users subscribed to unlimited music streams as an alternative to paid downloads or piracy. The company currently charges a monthly fee of NT$149 (about US$5) for access to its library, and is accessible in Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand. It has over five million paying subscribers as of 2014, and raised US$104 in a funding round led by Singapore’s GIC last August.

No all-you-can-eat free tier exists, but the company has said it will launch one soon.

Spotify’s expansion into Asia in late 2013 led many Taiwanese to question the future KKBox. Co-founder Chris Lin told Tech in Asia last year that its long-standing relationships with long-tail labels in Asia would help it retain its users. Even so, the company continues to stay nimble. Besides launching KKTix and acquiring WalkieTicket, the company also invested in Paganini+, a real-time bidding platform. That purchase will likely help pay the bills for a soon-to-launch free tier – a must-have in the age of Spotify and YouTube.

KKTix isn’t the only high-profile ticket vending service in Taiwan. Accuvalley’s Accupass, modeled after Eventbrite, closed a series A round last year, making it one of the island’s best-funded startups. The company serves Taiwan and mainland China under two different names and business models.

Now on Kickstarter, a little electric wheel that can motorize your bike or rollerblades

FlexPV, the electric-powered motorized wheel you can slap on anything like a bicycle or a skateboard and which we looked at a few months back, today hits Kickstarter.

The team is seeking to raise US$20,000 for the open source electric “vehicle” – the Kickstarter page is here. US$99 secures buyers one FlexPV motor/wheel along with universal brackets so you can Tesla-ify your bike, buggy, or rollerblades. Or perhaps a shopping cart – imagine that.

If you weigh about 70kg, the FlexPV can get you up to 25km/h (15.3mph) and get you as far as 15km (9.3 miles), the startup claims, though I suspect that a number of variables such as friction and the type of thing you attach the FlexPV to will change that a great deal. The motor/wheel weighs 1.08kg.

The FlexPV is controllable with a mobile app. That app can also map your route – as you plough head-long through a farmer’s market after dropping your phone.

The China-based startup behind FlexPV is Flexbot, which had a Kickstarter smash-hit in late 2013 with the open source, 3D-printed drone that raised over US$500,000. Earlier that year, the Flexbot crew graduated out of HAXLR8R, China’s premier incubator for hardware startups.

What Skystar’s incubator program offers

Geraldine Oetama is the executive director of Skystar’s incubator program and co-working space. She’s also partner at Skystar Capital and a member of Kompas Gramedia’s founding family. The incubator just admitted its second batch of startups, and five of six teams currently under the tutelage of the program also happen to be students of UMN. Oetama says the number of startups coming from within its own house is intentional.
“Though it is not exclusive to UMN students, most startups in the incubator program are or have been students of the university. This close relationship with the university is what makes Skystar’s program unique,” explains Oetama.

Skystar’s program lasts roughly six months and only one batch of startups is taken in per year. During the rest of the time, the space is used for other purposes, explains Oetama. With Skystar’s model, the startups do not receive investment, and Skystar does not take equity. What the program offers is access to its facilities, workshops, and an intense mentorship program.

In addition, there is a grant from the university awarded to some teams in stages throughout the program, according to Oetama. Three startups received this grant in the first batch, but for the second batch, none have so far. Oetama did not comment on the amount awarded through this grant.

So far I don’t see a big difference. The ideas the kids have make sense to them, these are the problems they are facing. Their models may not be validated yet. This is how our venture capital team is different to the incubator. Here, the ideas are much more creative and entertaining.

The second batch is fresh into the incubator, and their ideas are likely to undergo significant changes. One of these early-stage ideas has to do with the do-it-yourself and crafts community, another is targeting Indonesian antiques and art objects. Skystar’s demo day will take place at the end of July.

Study: More advertisers will choose Facebook video over YouTube this year

More marketers will use Facebook video for their ad campaigns than YouTube this year, according to a study released today.

The report, “The State of Video Advertising: Facebook’s Rise to Dominance,” was published by Mixpo, a company that helps publishers with their advertising plans. It said that this year, 87 percent of respondents to the survey said they planned on running video ads on Facebook, compared with 81.5 percent on YouTube.

Last year, for the first time, Facebook surpassed YouTube in overall video views. Now, says Mixpo, marketers will join everyday users — whose video posts on Facebook grew 94 percent in the U.S. year over year — in their preference for Facebook video.

Yet even as advertisers will be turning more to Facebook than YouTube this year, Mixpo argued, their use of social as a marketing platform doesn’t match the way everyday people use social.

The conclusion? That video advertising may help “close that gap.”

Mixpoの報告書によると、たとえ80%以上の調査回答者がソーシャル広告を重要、もしくはとても重要視していたとしても、ユーザがソーシャルメディアに費やす時間に比べ、ソーシャルメディアに充てられるデジタルメディア予算の割合は依然低く差がある、としている　（調査回答者のほぼ半分は、デジタルメディア予算の10%足らずしかソーシャルメディアに充てていない）。

At the same time, Facebook’s knowledge about its users’ behavior may well be its biggest advantage over YouTube. Mixpo noted that Facebook ad retargeting works across multiple devices “without dependency on third-party cookies that expire or get deleted.” As well, Facebook offers “true attribution based on view through and/or click-through,” even on mobile. And, while Facebook understands its users, it doesn’t pass personal information about them to advertisers, “eliminating liability for privacy protection.”

Augmented and virtual reality to grow to $150B by 2020, forecaster says

The augmented reality and virtual reality markets have yet to get off the ground. But market advisor Digi-Capital estimates that the combined markets will reach $150 billion by 2020.

Digi-Capital managing director Tim Merel believes that augmented reality — where you can add a virtual overlay to glasses that enable you to see the real world in a new way — will be four times bigger at $120 billion than virtual reality, which immerses you in a virtual world via goggles. Merel estimates that virtual reality will be more of a niche market at $30 billion by 2020. In 2016, Merel believes the market will be “single-digit billions.”

Elon Musk’s SpaceX buying $90 million of Elon Musk’s Solar City solar bonds

SolarCity, one of the world’s largest installers of solar panels, said today that SpaceX is investing in $90 million worth of its solar bonds.

In a blog post today, SolarCity said that the bonds are “issued — and backed — by SolarCity and powered by monthly solar payments from thousands of solar customers across the country.”

Added SolarCity, “SpaceX is effectively getting paid by the sun.”

Elon Musk, of course, is tied to both companies — as well as the electric car maker Tesla. Musk is the CEO of SpaceX (and Tesla) and the chairman of SolarCity’s board.

SolarCity also said that SpaceX bought the bonds in exactly the same way that any U.S. investor could — online. “After reviewing the investment materials,” SolarCity wrote in its blog post, SpaceX chief financial officer Bret Johnsen “took less than 10 minutes to set up an account and order the bonds.”

The rationale for investing in solar bonds is simple, the company said. It “offers investors like SpaceX the opportunity to earn significantly higher returns than those offered through comparable investments with the same maturities. At the same time, SolarCity is able to raise capital at lower cost.”
