The idea of delivering an affordable solution to help stroke victims get back on to their feet was particularly appealing for me because of my personal experience — I’ve lost my father to a stroke attack and also two of my uncles were confined to the care of their families because they couldn’t afford rehabilitation care. So I know how difficult it is having to let your loved one lose the ability to go through their day-to-day activities just because you can’t afford the rehab costs.

How big is the company now?

There are 45 people in our Korea and US office. We have experts in engineering, software development and rehab therapy as part of the R&D team, as well as an in-house hardware production capacity.

Vending Machine Operator Ubox Lands $85M USD Fresh Funding From Carlyle Group

China’s leading vending company Ubox has secured 530 million RMB ($85 million USD) in funding from Carlyle Group in exchange for an undisclosed stake. The investment was made through the Carlyle Beijing Partners Fund, an RMB fund the investment institution has established with the support of the Beijing government.

中国の大手自販機運営会社のUboxは、未公開株を提供する代わりに5億3000万人民元（8500万米ドル）の資金をCarlyle Groupより調達した。今回の資金提供は、北京政府の協力によって設立された人民元ファンド、Carlyle Beijing Partners Fund経由で行われた。

The financing is earmarked to expand Ubox’s vending machine network across the country, improve its digital advertising businesses, and develop more value-added services.

調達した資金は、Uboxの自販機ビジネスのネットワークを国内全域に広げるためや、デジタル広告ビジネスの改善、付加価値サービスの更なる開発等に充てられる。

Founded in 2010, Ubox is a key player in China’s vending machine industry. In addition to traditional vending services, Ubox is known for its pioneering O2O efforts in operating interactive vending machines, which enables customers to make purchases through their mobile app and then pick goods from offline vending devices.
Ubox machines support multiple payment methods ranging from credit/debit cards, to more popular mobile payment options like Alipay or WeChat Payment. Not only from retail sales, the company also makes money through ads on its online platform.

Operated under a franchise model, Ubox runs more than 30,000 machines across 58 cities in locations like transit stations and shopping malls across China, according to the company.
“China’s vending machine market is still at an early stage of development, with great potential for growth. The industry has seen an accelerated pace of growth in recent years, driven by increasing disposable income, rising urban population density and consumers’ preference for convenient lifestyles.” said Eric Zhang, managing director of the Carlyle Asia buyout team.

The deal points to the interest from foreign funds in China. As of June 2015, Carlyle Group has invested a combined $6.3 billion USD in 81 projects in China. The Ubox deal comes on the heels of Carlyle’s investment in transportation company Shanghai ANE Logistics Ltd. and equipment leasing firm JIC Leasing Co Ltd.

中国が、取引による外資に関心を示していることが分かる。2015年の6月時点で、Carlyle Groupは中国での81案件に対する出資総額は63億米ドルに達している。Uboxへの出資は、Carlyleが運送会社のShanghai ANE Logistics Ltdと設備リース会社のJIC Leasing Co Ltdに出資を行った直後に行われている。

Pickingo’s story

Started by a team of IIT-IIM graduates in December 2014, Gurgaon-based Pickingo does reverse pickups for large e-commerce players such as Jabong, Snapdeal, Shopclues and Paytm across six cities. More than 300 restaurants, groceries and pharmacies have signed up for its on-demand delivery service including some large hyperlocal startups. The company intends to expand to more than 20 cities by the end of this year.

Pickingo has scaled up in the past four months to more than 100 on-roll employees. It currently does around 3,000 deliveries per day with a fleet of 300 field executives.

I love going through reviews, be it for restaurants, hotels or cosmetics. I raise my eyebrows at 5.0 ratings and sunny reviews left by happy customers, and read everything else with joy. I love and obsess over the 4.8s and 4-and-a-half stars praising the hotel location, decor and receptionist, but complaining about the breakfast being paltry and unsatisfactory, perusing them to no end before I make a decision.

I ignore the 2.0s because there’s just no way I will go for that purchase. Most of the reviews on MangoPlate are in Korean — which means I won’t be able to understand them until I master the language — but all come with either ‘Recommend’, ‘It’s OK’ or ‘Do Not Recommend’.

“We haven’t really marketed to English-speaking communities here as much but you know, it’s already starting to take off (organically) anyway, so that’s a good thing,” says Joon Oh, Co-CEO, MangoPlate, in conversation with e27.

It was the second Friday in July, slightly more than a week after MangoPlate announced receiving US$6.1 million from Qualcomm Ventures, YJ Capital and SoftBank Ventures Korea. Oh had just returned from visiting the company’s new office space in Gangnam Finance Centre, literally 10 minutes away from its current office space in Yeoksam-based co-working building Maru 180, which can only accommodate up to 16 employees — the exact number of full-timers MangoPlate currently employs.

MangoPlate: the story

At one glance, MangoPlate is the sort of company that has got everything going for it. Even without a revenue model implemented, it has managed to secure two rounds of funding from venture capital firms. Its four Co-founders all bring different but valuable skill-sets to the table — Oh is the businessman, Michael Roh is the Chief Data Scientist who comes up with the algorithms that personalise recommendations, Hoseok Ryu handles server programming, and Daewoong Kim is the go-to person for client programming. They have been in business for more than two years now, and things are only looking up. Plus, there are no visible competitors.

Things went south really fast, however, when Parker gave me another 10x-type goal. I couldn’t 10x this specific campaign, and I had no other campaigns that could reach that goal. Four months after Parker asked me to 10x, I finally found a way to do it. Three months past the deadline.

I had become so focused on the lever that was working that I had completely stopped trying to find new levers to pull.

It’s worth noting here that Google Maps already has a built-in bookmarking feature that lets you save places to your Google account. But Mapstr has been built specifically for this purpose, and brings new features to the mix.

You can search for places based on your current location, search by name or address, navigate to a specific point on a map, or even snap a photo of an address — Mapstr uses optical character recognition (OCR) to identify the address and let you save it.

Moreover, Mapstr is all about organization. When you save a place to your account, you can add tags such as “parks” or “bars,” and even add comments — this could be useful to remind you why you saved a place.

ここで注目したいのは、Google Mapsには、お気に入りの場所をGoogleアカウントに保存するブックマーク機能が既に組み込まれている点だ。しかし、Mapstrは、それ専用に開発されており、ブックマーク機能を使って新しいことができるようになっている。

One of Mapstr’s key selling points is that it isn’t bloated with features — it doesn’t try to be a social network, though, with the latest version to hit the App Store, there is a social element to it. You can share your favorite places with friends, which is a genuinely useful feature.

Also, there’s a danger with apps such as this that they try to second-guess places you might like. Mapstr doesn’t try to be a recommendation engine — it’s all about letting you remember those little places that you loved at the time, though you could easily forget where they are or why you liked them.

The truth is that the game has already changed. Growth hacking is now for unicorns, not for the average startup. The growth hacking experts I’ve talked to agree; but investors don’t seem to understand this yet.

“[Investors expect] that you can build a crazy amount of traffic with no budget using just Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and LinkedIn,” said Anuj Shah, Cofounder and Chief Operating Officer of San Francisco-based Traba, a job matching website.

That’s just not possible anymore — especially since Facebook’s February 2014 News Feed update knocked out a cornerstone of free marketing.

According to Shah, without any advance warning, Traba’s visibility on Facebook went from thousands of impressions per post to fewer than 50 after the change, decimating Traba’s acquisition strategy. “We had to pay for boosted posts to reach any kind of meaningful audience. And we couldn’t afford that.” Facebook’s effectiveness as an acquisition channel went off a cliff for startups that hadn’t achieved product market fit or the ability to grow without spending money on marketing.

Cynthia Schames, CEO and founder of AbbeyPost, recently sold to Sourceeasy, as another example. “When I founded AbbeyPost, Facebook was a free channel,” Schames said. “When you posted to your feed, people would see it.” But Facebook’s newsfeed changes rendered AbbeyPost’s growth hacks unusable, leaving them suddenly unable to communicate with their 12,000+ carefully amassed customers and prospects without paying Facebook a toll to promote their posts — a cost they hadn’t budgeted for and one that ultimately they could not afford.

And Facebook’s about-face isn’t the only reason growth hacking has failed smaller companies that haven’t yet found product-market fit or grown a huge user base. Experts I’ve spoken with agree that growth hacking:
A) Is most effective as fuel on a fire already burning — the approach starts from what is working and builds on that. Fixes can also solve big problems, as in the case of Twitter — underperforming signup flows are a clear target for a fast growing startup.
B) Is about making seemingly small, carefully tested changes on a huge or rapidly growing base.
C) Requires time and strict disciplined thinking to be effective.

また、どの市場に参入すべきか把握しきれていない中小企業や、まだ顧客基盤を確立したいない中小企業で、グロースハッキングが上手く機能しなかったのは、Facebookが方針を180度変換したからだけではない。私は、グロースハッキングについて専門家達と話をし、以下の点で同意を得ている。グロースハッキングは、
A) 火に油を注ぐ程効果的である。先ずは上手くいっていることを検証し、それをベースに肉付けしていく。
Twitterのケースのように、修正することで、大きな問題も解決できる。急成長しているスタートアップにとって登録手続きの効率の悪さは、明らかに解決すべき問題である。
B) ベースになっている大事な核の部分や急成長しているベースの部分に、非常に小規模だが十分にチェックを行った変更をかけていく。
C) 効果を発揮させるには、時間ときちんとした考え方が必要である。

The strategy was focused on Google, Howard said.

“In terms of traffic acquisition, it turned out that way,” he explained. “Many publishers try to milk Facebook and others. For us, it is not the primary source of traffic. We recognize the search algorithms change all of the time, but this is on brand for us.”

Now, about 70 percent of Forbes’ revenue comes from digital sources, and 10 percent of the digital revenue comes from mobile. While mobile is 50 percent of overall traffic, the mobile revenue is only about 10 percent.

Howard氏によると、Googleに焦点を合わせた戦略をとっている。
