Today’s flight took off from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), a little after 7 a.m. local time (7 p.m. PDT), and will head eastward through India, China, the U.S., Europe, and Africa before landing back in the UAE in August. Yes, commercial airlines can relax for now–the single-seater aircraft will take around five months to complete the circumnavigation, with a multitude of stopovers for rest and maintenance planned. This time will also be spent campaigning on behalf of clean technologies.

Borschberg won’t undertake the full journey, however, as some stages will be piloted by record-breaking hot air ballooner Bertrand Piccard–someone with a big family tradition of record-setting feats. In 1960, Piccard’s father, Jacques, was one of the first people to reach the deepest place in the ocean, while in 1931 his grandfather, Auguste, was the first to reach the stratosphere in a balloon.

The Solar Impulse team had to build a bigger version of the original Solar Impulse prototype, given that it will be required to be in the air for longer periods of time and thus will need to store more energy from the sun. The aircraft sports a 72-meter wingspan–which is actually wider than a Boeing 747 jumbo jet, as the BBC points out–and it’s these wings that house the 17,000 solar cells that will be used to power the lithium-ion batteries for nighttime flying.

A number of major brands and retailers use Tmall for their flagship stores, even though many have their own standalone ecommerce sites in China. Other online retailing companies have opened up stores on Tmall before, such as Walmart’s Yihaodian.

Intel also announced a program to benefit all game developers: Achievement Unlocked.

The program is a coordinated worldwide effort to help game developers succeed when creating games that target Intel Graphics hardware, Intel Core processors, and Intel Atom processors.

A new game developer portal will let Intel communicate with game developers. Achievement Unlocked will also offer improved technical assistance to developers worldwide and additional success mentoring and go-to-market opportunities.

In still another development, Intel said it is helping Indie studio Flying Mollusk use Intel’s RealSense technology, which lets you control a game with hand gestures, to power the NeverMind ambitious bio-feedback enhanced psychological horror game Nevermind.

Intel also cut deals with Ubisoft, Codemasters, and Funcom to develop games using Intel technology.

Two-thirds of consumers say they’d like to shop using Oculus

Two out of every three consumers say they would like to try shopping with the help of the Oculus virtual reality system.

That was one of the conclusions of the Re-inventing Retail study from Walker Sands, a market research firm. And 30 percent of consumers say they would likely shop more online if they could try out products using virtual reality.

Walker Sands has looked at the impact of other next-generation technologies on shopping, as well. In its study, the firm also examined people’s feelings about incorporating drones into their shopping experience. Two-thirds of consumers say they expect to have clothes and books delivered by drones within five years.

With Oculus, which Facebook bought last year for $2 billion, there’s plenty of reason to think shopping can be a richer experience. That’s because users can see a highly detailed 3D visualization of just about anything. In a way, it’s ideal for looking at products without having to go anywhere.

Xiaomi Unveils Ultracheap Action Camera Costing Just $63

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is breaking into the sports camera industry with a low-cost camera retailing at only RMB399 (US$63). The GoPro-style gadget is also offered in a RMB499 version which includes an accompanying selfie stick.

Dubbed YiCamera (our translation), the new product is made by Ants, or Xiaoyi, a Dropcam-like video monitoring camera maker which is a major member of Xiaomi’s ambitious hardware plan.

The camera features an Ambarella A7LS processor and Sony 16MP Exmor R BSI CMOS photo sensor that works under diverse types of lighting. Users can shoot with various video resolutions (1080p/60fp, 720p/120fps, 240p/480fps) under different scenarios. The f/2.8 aperture lens capture 155-degree wide angle views.

The new snapper supports various shooting mode, including 0.5-60 second time delay, 3-15 second time lapse photography, and up to 7 images per second of continuous shooting. Designed for adventure-buffs, the company also released a waterproof case for the gadget which supports waterproof depths of up to 40m.

Available in grass green and white versions, YiCamera supports WiFi and Bluetooth and has an app for video editing and sharing. It is on sale now on Xiaomi’s website, JD and Tmall.

YiCamera’s price is obviously the clincher when compared to its rivals. GoPro is expanding into China this year so as to reduce its reliance on the US market. GoPro 3+ Silver, on a par with YiCamera in its specifications, costs US$299.99. Xiaomi’s entry into the action camera arena will pose a formidable challenge to GoPro in China.

The rising hardware craze has drawn a spate of Chinese companies to enter the action camera industry. Shenzhen-based drone maker Dji Innovations is planning to introduce hardware with advanced camera features and to build drones with embedded cameras, while GoPro is poised to launch consumer drones to supplement its action camera lineup.

Ezviz, an internet smart video surveillance brand backed by Chinese video monitoring solution provider Hikvision Digital, released an activity camera last year. VIDIT, a similar product developed by a Chinese startup team, is also entering this market.

Thinfilm, based in Oslo, Norway, is showing off the smart bottle and the printed electronics that it developed for the bottle at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, Spain. The company recently announced a deal with Xerox that will enable Thinfilm to print billions of chips per year on tiny labels as part of its plan to track IoT devices.

Thinfilm has figured out how to print chips such as sensors on tags that can be attached to bottles. Using Thinfilm’s OpenSense technology, a smart bottle can detect both the sealed and open state of the bottle. The tags and sensor information they contain will allow Diageo to send personalized communications to consumers who read the tags with their smartphones.

The project came from Diageo Technology Ventures, an experimental tech and investment arm of Diageo. The goal is to enable Diageo to send consumers targeted and timely marketing messages, whether at retail or after purchase. It can, for instance, send you cocktail recipes after you open the bottle.

Thinfilm’s NFC-based tags can be read by readers all across the supply chain, allowing retailers and manufacturers to track inventory to the point of purchase. The tech provides a new layer of security in ensuring the authenticity of the scotch. Sutija said the tag adds tens of cents to the cost of a bottle.

ASEAN has created an ICT Masterplan for 2015 to address these issues. Local investors have already begun to take a vested interest in broadband and mobile infrastructure. But the report says Southeast Asian countries should also receive government aid to increase internet coverage. The masterplan also talks about enhancing cross-border connectivity via a Pan-Asian Terrestrial Fiber Optic Network and raising internet awareness at a grassroots level, starting with school children.

2. Support the new guys

Although some local ecommerce players have emerged as champions, consumers appear to be more attracted to foreign online retailers that don’t necessarily have local footprints. US-based Amazon, Groupon, and eBay remain some of the most popular ecommerce sites in all six nations.

Some the root causes of this include public skepticism about online offerings from local companies. Another big one is how the lack of resources – including finances, the right talent, and general know-how – hampers local players’ ecommerce capabilities.

XAir is developing a variety of flight and ground control systems, software, and sensors, along with several different types of drones. Some have fixed-wing structures, while others use rotors. The company is targeting the agriculture, mining, infrastructure inspection, cinematography, mini-cargo, and oil and gas industries, all of which have obvious needs for long-flying drones.

Of course, such usage in the United States is a regulatory problem, as the Federal Aviation Administration has restricted the commercial use of drones. Recently, the FAA proposed new guidelines for commercial drones weighing 55 pounds or less that would limit them to an altitude of 500 feet or lower and a speed of less than 100 miles an hour. But until new guidelines go into effect, industries like those targeted by XAir must get exemptions from the FAA in order to use drones, and such exemptions have been extremely hard to get.
