I will explain how to do worship service. The formal way of pray is wash left hand first, right hand, and finally mouth with a ladleful of water, followed by purifying the hand of the ladle. This time purify your hand with pouring water.

Japanese like amulets. They are like a cross of Christianity. Wanting to be with Nichiren, some people keep an amulet in every day life. Their wishes are various; many people pray wanting to meet a good partner for marriage, to be able to go into desired high schools or colleges, and so on.

You burn incense sticks, purify your body, and bring the fine smell directly to the principal image.

Now I will explain how to pray. In a formal way, wash your left hand then right hand and mouth with a ladleful of water. After that, wash a handle of it with the same water. Let's cleanse ourselves by watering our hands.

Japanese people love lucky charms. They are like crosses of Christianity. Some people spend their days with lucky charms, hoping to be with Nichiren. Other people use them with a pray for meeting a good mate, passing a high school and a university.

Light an incense stick, cleanse your body with the smell of it, then deliver the nice smell to the principal object.

Let me explain how you can pray at the temple.
The formal style is; get a ladle of water, then, cleanse away the left hand, right hand and the mouth using the water in the ladle, and then, wash out the handle of ladle as the final preparation. Today, we just cleanse away our hands by pouring the water.

Japanese like to carry a charm. It is like a cross for Christianity. Some people spend a daily life carrying a charm in which they believe with the spirits of Nichiren. Of course, people obtain a charm with different hopes; hopefully meeting with a good future partner to be or passing the entrance exam for a college.
Let’s light the incense sticks; cleanse away our body with aroma, then, proceed to the main hall to see Buddhism God with good aroma.

Recently, many people apply smoke on the defective part of their body, hoping for being healthy: head, heart, feet and so on.

The main hall which was built in Edo period was burnt down during the World War 2. It was rebuilt in 1964, 49 years ago.

Throw money in it when you pray. You can light a candle like in a church.
Japanese people visit temples occasionally; New year's holidays, the closing day of the winter (February 3), Flower festival (Buddha's birthday?), Oeshiki, when someone passed away, and Buddhist memorial days of the departed.

Now we are going to the five-story pagoda.

In these days, some people try to bring the incense smoke to a part of body with a trouble. Many of them try it for the head, heart and legs.

The previous main hall, which was constructed in the Edo era, burned out during WW II. The present main hall has been reconstructed 48 years before.

Just throw a change into an offertory box. We can even light a candle as in like a church. Japanese visit the temple on January, Setsubun (February 3 or 4), Flower Festival (The birthday festival of Buddha based on a legend), Oeshiki, Burial, anniversary of dead etc.; visiting the temple occasionally.

Well, let’s go to five-storied pagoda.

There are cherry trees on the way.

The five-story pagoda was built in 1608, 405 years ago. The important cultural property was not burnt in the war. It is the oldest pagoda in Kanto area. Twelve animal signs are curved on its surface. Four Buddhist saints and the mortuary tablet of the second Tokugawa shogun are kept inside the door. It was built after his recovery, which everyone hoped for.
The characteristics of it is that it has the building style of an age between Momoyama and Edo periods. Momoyama was before Edo. There is only one pagoda in Japan which has the characteristics of Momoyama period.

It has a high value as a cultural heritage.

Five-story pagodas are said to have a strong architecture against earthquakes. Therefore the method was used for building Tokyo Sky Tree.
The red color is from ocher, which is different from that of two-story pagoda.

Now we are going to Banryozuka.
Here is a leaflet. Banryozuka is a huge graveyard on top of the mountain in Ikegami. This is a tomb of Hoshinnin, the grandson of Tokugawa Ieyasu.
It is arranged neatedly now. However, there were large trees about 10 years ago.

This is an important place which has a 2000-year-old ruin. It was excavated 10 years ago.

The value of cultural heritage is very high.

Five-story pagoda(Gojuunotou), from architectural perspective is strong to withstand earthquake, that it has been made reference for Sky Tree construction.
Unlike the two-story pagoda, red color is red iron oxide coating.

Let's take a look at Manryoutsuka.
Here is the pamphlet. Manryoutsuka is a huge tomb located on Mount Ikegami. This is the Tokugawa Ieyasu grandson, Houshinin's tomb.
Now, it is clean and neat, but about 10 years ago, a big tree is growing there.

This is an important place with the remains of 2,000 years before, and excavations have been made 10 years ago.

Please see the pictures of excavation in the brochure. The excavation continued for 5 years. The graveyard was developed. Now it is kept neatly, as you see. It was developed so recently that not all the people in Ikegami know it. A lot of earthen vessels of 2000 years old have come out from here. They are displayed at the main hall of Eijuin, which you can see and touch later. They are 2000 years old. Aren't they amazing?

This big tomb is of Tokugawa's granddaughter's. Her name was Hoshinnin.

We finished maintenance quite recently, so there are people in ikegami who don't know about here. Many earthenware about 2,000 years ago were discovered at this place, too. They are displayed at the main building of Eijuin, so please take a look and touch later. 2,000 years, such a long time!

There is no other grave that big and lordly for a female in the Edo period. After going around this area, we will go inside the main hall of Eijyuin. You can actually see and touch many things in the hall, and even ask questions.

I would like to explain what the temple means to us in daily life.

When you are pressed by work and busy with day-to-day life, you tend to focus on efficiency and the speed. You can feel a day, a week, or a year passes by like a flash. I believe we should have a different time axis such as “Time of Life” which is different from the time axis of the daily life and working. It is a time which runs slowly so that you can look inside yourself.

I'd like to tell you what role temples play in your daily lives.

You need to do things effectively and speedy when you have many things to do. A day, a week, even a year seem to pass by like a flash. I think you have "a time of your life", which is different from that of your work and daily things.

It is a time which runs slowly so that you can look inside yourself.
I believe the “Time of Life” is when you are putting your hands together praying and remembering the deceased, when you are feeling heartbroken, dealing with the death of your loved one. “Time of Life “is also when you feel the beauty of the flowers, and hear the birds chirping. We need a time which runs slow to face worries and to contemplate without being rushed. We need to take a quiet moment to overcome the sadness and to carry on living. A temple is where the “Time of Life” passes slowly. Please feel the “Time of Life” yourself, the time which passes slowly.

It is a time which passes so slowly that you can look at yourself. I think you have "a time of your life" when you commemorate your dearly beloved who departed, joining your hands in prayer. You also have it when you see flowers and think they are beautiful, or you hear birds singing. We need a relaxing time to face our anxiety and to think quietly. We need to have a quiet time to get over our grief and to live our life. "A time of your life" passes so slowly in temples. Please feel a quiet and slow "time of your life".
