I came to Salem in 2002. In Salem's sister city, Ota Ward, there are many places I'd like you to see. Today, we will visit one of those places, mainly Ikegami Honmonji Temple. I can't speak English very well but I would be happy if I could spend some enjoyable time with you all. I will introduce Mr./Ms. Takagi, who will join us.
In order for you to enjoy this place as much as possible, I made some pamphlets in advance. They are quite simple, but they explain in English. Inside, there is a cut-out of the five storied pagoda. I asked a cut-out maker friend of mine to make this.

I have been to Salem, Massachusetts in 2002. I would like to introduce various places in the Ota ward which is the sister city of Salem. Today, I would like to introduce mainly the Ikegami Honmonji Temple, one of the sightseeing spots in the ward. I’m not good at speaking English but I feel happy if you could enjoy the time touring with me. I would like to introduce Takagi-san who is going around with us today. We have provided the booklet for yours to enjoy this place as much as possible. The booklet is in English with the brief descriptions of this temple.
We also provided with the paper cutout bookmark of a five-storied pagoda which we asked our paper cutout artist to make.

た。6月はアジサイが見事に咲いていましたので、「アジサイと五重塔」という作品も切ってもらいました。

さて、今日は表紙にある６か所を見学します。日本人もよくお散歩するところです。　

この辺りは、徳川家康が都を江戸に開いた400年前から、賑やかになってきました。特に、江戸時代、徳川家の菩提寺となったため、繁栄したお寺です。
本門寺を中心に２４の小さなお寺も周辺にあります。環境が良く、商店街とは違う落ち着きがあるので、たくさん人が集まってきます。江戸時代はもっと賑やかであったと思います。

These areas started to bustle 400 years ago when Tokugawa Ieyasu located Edo capital. This temple florished especially because Tokugawa made it as family temple in Edo period.
There are 24 small temples around Honmonji temple. It has a good environment and is calm, which is unusual in a shopping street. So many people come here. I think it was more bustling in Edo period.

I have been here in June when the hydrangeas were beautifully opened up. As I have recalled that scenery, I have asked creating the bookmark “Hydrangea and the Five-storied Pagoda”.

Well, we are going around the six places shown in the front cover today. Those places are the famous places to stroll for Japanese. 　

The cityscape around here has begun uproarious since 400 years ago when the Tycoon Tokugawa Ieyasu came to Edo (ancient name of Tokyo). Especially after this temple became the family temple of Tycoon family Tokugawa, it has this temple lead to prosperity. There are twenty four small temples around here with a focus on the Honmonji. Since this place is environmentally friendly and makes everybody calmed down different form a commercial avenue, many people want to visit here. I think it had to be more busy during the Edo era.

Samurai and merchants in Edo visited this temple to pray for. I thing people in Edo enjoyed visiting temples like going on an excursion. Many people have come here to pray, eat delicious food and do shopping. This town became busier.
Omori, where you stay in, has been a very busy town since Edo period. There is a sea at the east coast of Omori. I hear people gathered here to play in the sea. Ikegami has aslo been flourished since Edo period.

Let's start with Daibo Hongyoji temple. Please take your shoes when you enter. This is a head temple of the Nichiren Shu Order.

All the temples we go are under the Nichiren sect. It is one of teachings of Buddhism. Its teaching is the following: Do what is right as much as possible while you are alive. It will make the world better, and make yourself happier. Live well now. This concept is different from the one that dead people shold go to heaven. People of the Nichiren sect pray with "Namumyohorengekyo". The name "Nichiren sect" is from the sacred name of a man who started it. His name is "Nichiren". He was 61 years old at that time.

This is where the house stood Nichiren visited during his travel. He got really sick and stayed in his house. He was taken care of by people here, but he didn't recover and passed away.It was in 1282, 730 years ago in Kamakura period.
This is where Ikegami Munenaka's house stood.
Nichiren had a serious illnes, however, he gave a lecture of the Lotus Sutra to many of his pupils and believers for a month until he passed away.
While giving a lecture, Nichiren leaned against the pillar because he couldn't sit straight.

Nichiren passed away on October 13 when he was sixty one years old.

Please settle down on the floor if you could. This house was the place where Nichiren was taken care of due to his illness getting worse in the middle of his journey around Japan. He passed away at this house although he was receiving the treatment while well taken care of. It was the year 1282 when he passed away. Seven hundred thirty years back in the Kamakura era. The huge house owned by Ikegami Munenaka used to be at this place. The illness of Nichiren was quite severe but he continued teaching to many disciples and believers for one month immediately before his death. Although he could not sit on the floor upright but he continued teaching while he was leaning against the post.

The black wood is a part of that pillar. You can touch it.
After Nichiren died, Ikegami Sochu changed his house into the temple, and this temple t has been present as it is still now. This room is assigned as a remains of Tokyo Metropolitan area.

Let’s go to pray. I will pray first. Please do as I do. You can burn incense.

Behind this room is a little pond. Let’s go around it. Though this is a small garden, it provides a tranquil space for us Japanese. How do you like it?
There are many buildings related Nichiren and Sochu in this temple.

This is the temple since then which has the history of 730 years. This room has been designated as one of the monuments by the Tokyo City government.

日蓮が亡くなった時、春に咲くはずの桜が秋にも関わらず、花を咲かせたと言い伝えられており、実際に秋に桜が咲きます。
この本門寺一帯で一番賑やかな日は10月12日です。
10月12日の夜は、この池上はとても賑やかな夜になります。セーラムのハロウィン（魔女の日）のような感じです。夜の暗闇の中に明かりがたくさんつながって、とても美しい行事です。お会式（おえしき）と言います。明かりの外側に桜の花をあしらったものを、高く掲げて賑やかに行列が続きます。

It was said that when Nichiren passed away, lots of spring flowers were in bloom although it was autumn. Actually, cherry blossoms are in bloom in autumn.
The busiest day around Honmonji temple is October 12.
Ikegami gets really bustling at night of that day. It is like Halloween night (of witches) of Salem.
They have a very beautiful event with a lot of lights in series in the dark. It is called "Oeshigi". The lights are decorated with cherry blossoms on their surfaces. They are held high up in line.

Let's go to Hoto tower now.

Within the premises of this temple, there are many building structures related to Nichiren and Munenaka.

There has been a story passed along generation to generation that the cherry blossom around there has opened up, when Nichiren died, in spite of in autumn and those actually opens up in autumn even now.

October 12 is the busiest day in a year around Honmonji. A lot of people visit during the night time making this area sea of people. You may feel like the Halloween in Salem. It is the event in darkness with amazing streams of lights which gives very beautiful scenery. It is called Oeshiki or the anniversary of death of highest priest Nichiren.　People walk in line joyfully with raising the lighted lanterns drawn the cherry blossom on the outer housing.

You can see a big tomb on your left. It is of Kano group's. Kano group built Yomemon of Nikko Toshogu, which you will visit tomorrow. Honmonji temple has a lot of tombs of famous people's. Many people of Kano group have their tombs here. This is a family temple of them.

Do you think this archtecture is made of concrete or wood? The answer is wood.
I live in this neighborhood. And I thought it was made of concrete just a year ago. This is a holy ground of Nichiren sect.

Well, let’s move to the Hoto.

You can see the huge grave at your left, aren’t you? That is the Kano school final resting place. The Kano school constructed the Yomei-mon gate at Nikko Tosho-gu where you are going to visit tomorrow.

The Honmonji temple has a lot of graves of well know people within its premises. There are many graves of talented painters including the Kano school. Actually, this temple is the school temple of Kano.

Look everybody, what do you think of this building structure, made of concrete or wood? The answer is the wood. I have been living this neighbor and thinking that this is made of concrete until last year. Here is the holy site of Nichiren.

It is especially an important place. Nichiren was cremated here. He was burnt and his ashes are kept here.
There is the same Hoto inside as the one outside. Nichiren's beads are also kept inside. Doors are opened at the night of October 12, Oeshiki, and you can see the lighted inside. It is really beautiful.

This was made 185 years ago in Edo period. The round part outside was made of a series of wood plates taken from a big tree. Since trees have distortions, it needs high architecture skills. Only a carpenter with a special high skill can process it.

Here is at most important place for the Nichiren Buddhism. The priest Nichiren was cremated here and the remaining ash has been kept here. There is the building structure inside of which is identical to what you are looking now. The Buddhist rosary belonged to Nichren has been kept inside. Only once a year on October 12, the day of Oeshiki, the gates are opened and lighted up so that everybody can see inside which is very splendid.


This has been structure in the Edo era, way back to the 185 years ago. The outer rounded shape was made of the hollow out woods jointed together. As the woods warped depending on the environment, the considerably high skills were applied for construction.

階段を上がって、大堂へ移動します。足元に気をつけてください。右手の古い建物は経蔵（きょうぞう）です。今から230年前、江戸時代に建てられました。

Only a specially-skilled carpenter was able to build this.
The color combination of carved dragon and the animals on the wooden panel are work of art.
It is colored with lacquer and 400kg in amount was used just for red. Since the lacquer is very valuable, things like this can never be made today.
It is a precious architecture and the height is 17.5m.

Please look upward. Can you see the lordly grave up there? It is the grave of Tokugawa family in the Edo period.

Let’s go up the stairs and move on to the Dai-dou (Big Hall). Please watch your step. The old architecture on your right is Kyo-zou (a library of religious texts).
It was built 230 years ago in the Edo period.

These wooden dragons and animals are beautiful in admirable colors. Japanese lacquer is used. 400 kilograms of red lacquer is used. It is so expensive that we can't use it for this kind of things. It is precious architecture. It is 17.5 meters tall.

Please look upward. Can you see a splendid tomb? It is of Tokugawa's in Edo period.

We are going upstairs to Daido. Watch your step. The old architecture on your right is Kyozo. it was built 230 ago in Edo period.

Only the specifically high skilled carpenter can create these outputs. The structure is with carved wooden dragons and animals and excellent arrangement of colors. Japanese lacquers are used to generate different colors. Only for red color, 400 Kg of Japanese lacquer is used. Because the lacquer is quite expensive now a day, it is impossible to create at this moment. It is greatly precious structure in these days with 17.5 meter high.

Please look up over there. Could you see the great grave? That is the final resting place of Tokugawa family during the Edo era.

We are going up the steps and moving to the main hall. Please watch your steps. Please look at the old structure at your right, that is the scripture house built in Edo era way back to 230 years ago.
