With increased government support and funding from VCs, Malaysia is cultivating a vibrant startup scene, and MaGIC wants to help nurture it

Only a month ago, Malaysia-based e-hailing app (although it now touts itself as Singapore-based company), GrabTaxi, announced that it raised a whopping US$400 million from China’s taxi app giant Didi Kuaidi, American investment firm Coatue Management, Chinese sovereign wealth fund China Investment Corporation, along with a few shareholders.

This funding increases the four-year old startup’s war chest to US$700 million, bringing its valuation to a staggering US$1.8 billion.

Why is this particularly significant?

Well, because it marks a huge milestone in the country’s bid to grow its startup ecosystem that can hold its own not only regionally, but also globally.

GrabTaxi has essentially become the first unicorn to have been born in Malaysia. In fact, it’s one of the only five — which include Vietnam’s VNG (estimated valuation US$1 billion), Thailand’s Lazada (estimated valuation US$1.2 billion), Singapore’s Garena (estimated valuation US$1 billion) and InMobi (estimated valuation US$1 billion) — to graze in the fields of the Southeast Asian startup ecosystem.

There is also the 1337 Accelerator (in geek speak, 1337 translates to ‘elite’) which aims to incubate and fund new startups. Among its more interesting incubatees are ParkEasy, which allows drivers to find parking space easily; WorkChat, a messaging platform for businesses; and GigFairy, which aims to be the Airbnb for live music.

There are a still a few kinks to iron out — such as stemming a brain drain, but Malaysia is also making great strides in the area of support.

Level of support

The Malaysian government is actively supporting the growth of startups. In the Malaysia Budget 2015, Prime Minister Najib Razak announced that his administration is ramping up support for entrepreneurship and human capital.

In an interview with DealStreetAsia, CEO of government-linked early-stage funding provider, Nazrin Hassan was quoted as saying that the government will be focussing on”support on foreign market access, improving human capital, diversifying the talent capital of the ecosystem by infusing global talents, encouraging private investment via matching financing or venture capital, preparing mechanisms for institutional and angel involvement in investing in high-growth companies, improving public-private sector linkages and commercialisation”.

The government also wants to target the Muslim-oriented tech market.

Through platforms such as the Investment Account Platform, Shariah-compliant businesses would be able to receive investments and loans.

Other investment schemes include the SME Investment Partner, which would match the funds raised through the private sector.

It is also channeling funds to R&D to the tune of MYR 300 million (estimated US$70.74 million).

In a 2015 Financial Review report, Malaysia’s Treasury, Ministry of Finance, Dr Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah said that the government is engaging global consulting firm McKinsey & Company to help attract VCs and investment firms from the US and as well as investment and entrepreneur partnership programmes from Australia.

He also discussed the possibility of making Cyberjaya, a city 20 km from capital city Kuala Lumpur, the tech hub of Southeast Asia that would rival Silicon Valley.

Another government-supported initiative, Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Centre (MaGIC) will also see a growth in its scope of goals and functions in the coming years.

Weaving magic into the ecosystem

MaGIC, which has a government fund of RM50 million (estimated US$11.4 million) and had its headquarters officially opened by US President Barack Obama, wants to be instrumental in enabling its local startups. Through its programmes, it wants to make Malaysia an attractive destination for expatriate tech companies.

And no, there is no sleigh of hand or illusion involved.

CEOs: If your startup is expanding to a new market, you should be there

As a startup CEO and the mother of two children under the age of two, my presence on the tech scene is already fairly irregular, demographically speaking. I recently made an additional unusual step of moving my young family over 7,000 miles across the world to oversee the opening of my company’s new offices in San Francisco.

Opening a new office in a new city, state, or country involves managing an expenditure budget, hiring, making key infrastructure decisions, and many other tasks, sometimes in a foreign language. As CEO, you can hire someone new or send over an existing employee to do the job. But there are some very good reasons to make the move yourself, even if the timing isn’t the best for you personally. Here are four of them:

The sponsorship has to be the right kind. It can’t simply be a top-down dictum. It has to be the kind of sponsorship that is going to allow the team to make some of the critical decisions and find their own way. It has to hold them accountable, but also realize that there are going to be bumps along the way, and even some failures. If you’re not experiencing a few failures, you’re not taking enough risks. Good managers know this.

Ashton Kutcher invests in esports startup Unikrn as it launches a global platform

First, billionaire investor and Shark Tank television celebrity Mark Cuban invested in Unikrn. Now Ashton Kutcher and Guy Oseary are investing in the esports gaming startup through their Sound Ventures investment firm. Unikrn is also launching its global platform today.

Following on a $7 million investment that included Cuban, the deal is another sign that esports is maturing and that entrepreneurs are figuring out ways to make money from the tens of millions of people who regularly watch esports matches for fun. Seattle-based Unikrn has created a website where you can bet on matches with your favorite esports athletes in games such as League of Legends, Counter-Strike Global Offensive, Dota 2, and others.

Rahul Sood founded the company in September with Karl Flores, another gaming entrepreneur. He’s a former Microsoft executive and founder of gaming PC maker Voodoo PC.

The previous investment round was led by Jonathan Teo and Justin Caldbeck of Binary Capital, who are known for early investing in companies such as Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, Whisper, and Taskrabbit. Besides Cuban, other investors include Advancit Capital, Freelands Group, 500 Startups, Indicator Ventures, and Tabcorp.

To date, Unikrn has raised $10 million in its short life. But the company is moving fast to take advantage of the growth of esports. According to ESPN, 27 million people tuned in to watch the 2014 finals of the League of Legends World Championship. That is more than watched the final game of the World Series (23.5 million) or the NBA Finals (18 million). The global audience on Twitch is more than 100 million monthly active users.

The company launched its Unikrn Arena Global around the world. It’s a virtual arena where users can earn “Unikoins” by participating in various activities and then use the virtual currency to increase their chances of winning prizes. Unikrn is also launching its Unikrn Vault companion app, which will be available soon on Android and iOS.

Unikrn works on either mobile or desktop, and it operates only in jurisdictions where betting on esports is legal.

Sood was recently general manager of Microsoft Ventures, but he quit that job to start Unikrn with Flores, the former CEO of online gaming advertising firm Pinion.

Kutcher and Oseary are active tech investors, and they have taken stakes in Airbnb, Foursquare, Skype, SoundCloud, Square, Zenefits, and Uber.
