Despite the risks of investing in entertainment companies, Gigi Levy-Weiss — the head of the NFX Guild accelerator, which makes investments in game and tech companies — has jumped on game investments in the past. He invested in successful Israeli game companies Plarium and Playtika.

The latter company is now owned by Caesars and has become the world’s largest social casino game company, according to market analyst Eilers Research. Caesars bought Slotomania developer Playtika for a valuation of $150 million in 2011. That deal helped trigger the social-casino game frenzy in Israel, and now the overall Israeli game sector has expanded to 200 game companies across social casino, marketing tech, educational games, and online gambling.

“When you get it right, nothing grows as fast,” said Levy-Weiss, speaking at the Casual Connect Tel Aviv event in Israel.

Levy-Weiss went on to delineate the characteristics of a successful game company and what he looks for when he is funding companies.

It’s a very short path to market. There’s a growing talent pool. Are there any rules to help you succeed?

“There are no guarantees, but there are critical rules to follow to get above the noise,” Levy-Weiss said.

He said there is no such thing as “too good people.” A company is a sum of its people. You have to only recruit the best to work with you.

Having talent mitigates the risk of a game company. Those risks are plentiful. They include the rarity of hits, fierce competition, growing user acquisition costs, the lack of inexpensive viral channels, and low exits for multiples, said Levy-Weiss.

Levy-Weiss also said there is no such thing as moving too fast.

“Speed is the No. 1 competitive advantage of a startup,” Levy-Weiss said. “If you end up not being fast, you will lose to the big guys. You can beat a brand chess master if you move twice for every move he makes.”

You have to respond to your customers and “find your love,” meaning you have to tweak the game to get it right for consumers. He noted that Zengaming had to experiment for a while before it found success with its network of esports participants.

“If your core game loop is not working, it won’t just suddenly start,” Levi-Weiss said. “If you are not sure you are a winner, it’s probably not.”

China’s Meituan and Dianping Merge To Form O2O Giant

Meituan and Dianping, the two leading group-buying providers, often dubbed the respective Groupon and Yelp of China, have agreed to form a joint venture with equal shares valued between $15 billion and $17 billion USD, according to statements from both companies and their investors.

The match-up marks the end of another O2O service war in China, once again bringing together the country’s two biggest tech powerhouses and investors, Tencent and Alibaba.

The deal between Ali-backed Meituan and Tencent-backed Dianping is the second landmark merger between the tech giants this year, with their respective car-hailing apps Kuiadi Dache and Didi Dache joining forces in February.

While the merger will bring together two of the largest O2O providers in the market, it won’t quite form the same monopoly as the Didi Kuaidi deal. Both Alibaba and Tencent have invested separately in other companies that are still competing successfully in the market, including Ali-backed O2O hub Koubei and Tencent-backed food and grocery delivery startup Ele.me.

As Apple Pay is finally looking to make inroads to China, Chinese e-commerce behemoth Alibaba, a dominating player in China’s mobile payment sector through its payment affiliate Ant Financial, recently released a payment-focused smartwatch Pay Watch in partnership with Shenzhen-based manufacturer FiiSmart.

The new gadget sports a 1.63-inch AMOLED display and is powered by dual-core CPU with 4GB of storage. Other specs include Bluetooth, a built-in 300mAh battery that supports 45 hours of regular use and magnetic charging. Also notable, Pay Watch is the first smartwatch that is equipped with Alibaba’s customized Android system YunOS.

As its name suggests, Pay Watch focuses on mobile payment functions with support for Alipay, the payment method run by Ant Financial. This tie-up will effectively grant Pay Watch the wide offline payment networks that Alipay has established. As China’s most popular third-party payment service, Alipay supports payment at around 130,000 offline stores or restaurants, ranging from fast food brands like KFC to super market chains like Carrefour and Walmart.

Like on the Alipay app, wearers will be able to make payments by scanning QR codes that are generated by double-clicking the side button. The manufacturer added that transactions can be completed within one second even if there’s no internet connection.

Security is an indispensable part in mobile payment. An infrared sensor embedded will trigger screen lock once the watch is detached from wearer’s wrist.

Apart from mobile payments, it also features average smartwatch functions such as, health tracking, checking weather and receiving push notifications from smartphone.

The product launched a crowdfunding campaign on Alibaba’s Taobao crowd funding platform, offering four versions of Pay Watch at crowd funding prices starting from 699 RMB ($109 USD) or 899 RMB when they hit the market for real.

Mobile payment is becoming a must for smart wearables that want to stand out from the vast crowd of Chinese smart hardware manufacturers. Both Apple Watch and Mi Band have teamed up with Alipay. Shuashua, a near-field communication (NFC) smart bracelet developed by a Beijing startup, also supports transactions with bus and taxi services, as well as supermarkets, restaurants, cinemas and hospitals.

Freshdesk buys social recommendation app Frilp to improve customer service

Cloud service desk software provider Freshdesk is announcing today that it has acquired Frilp, a small startup with an app that lets users seek and receive expert help from friends.

All 19 employees of Frilp — which stands for “free help” — have joined Freshdesk’s development center in Chennai. The beta Frilp app for Android will shut down soon. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

This acquisition isn’t meant to make Freshdesk into a consumer app. Rather, Frilp’s know-how will help Freshdesk become a smarter, more scalable tool for getting customers’ questions answered quickly. And that means relying on people who don’t work directly for companies but do have the ability to help, including friends of consumers.

“What we do know is our customers have asked us for this and said, ‘Can we enable some sort of peer-to-peer conversation, because I have a very active set of users or customers,'” Freshdesk president Dilawar Syed told VentureBeat in an interview this week.

The idea is to extract key terms from customer service tickets with natural language processing — technology that was at the core of Frilp — and use that to find the people best-equipped to help.

The move looks forward-thinking on the part of Freshdesk, as it faces competition from Salesforce (which has been doing more with the technology it picked up through the RelateIQ acquisition), Zendesk, and Atlassian, among others. There are also enterprise software vendors with on-premises service desk tools, including Oracle and SAP.

Freshdesk plans to incorporate Frilp’s technologies in three ways, Syed said.

All of this should lessen the burden on companies’ customer service teams. And that’s important, because companies are getting a higher and higher volume of requests for help from customers, but companies “can’t keep hiring customer service reps, especially in North American markets,” Syed said.

It’s likely that Freshdesk will take a vertical-specific approach here in the U.S. and roll out its services in the industries where it has the most traction, and thereby the most data. Prices for the services haven’t been determined yet, Syed said.

Frilp started in 2012. The startup raised $500,000 in funding from angel investors, including Freshdesk cofounder and chief executive Girish Mathrubootham and former Groupon executive Deva Kannan. The startup participated in the Microsoft Ventures accelerator.

San Francisco-based Freshdesk started in 2010 and employs around 450 people. Freshdesk announced a $50 million funding round, with Tiger Global participating, in April. Freshdesk now has more than 50,000 customers in 145 countries, Syed said.

This is Freshdesk’s second acquisition. The first was live video chat service 1CLICK.

Facebook will use satellites to bring broadband to large parts of Africa

In its latest effort to open up Internet access to developing markets, Facebook has partnered with French satellite company Eutelsat Communications.

The ensuing initiative, which spans a number of years, is scheduled for launch in the latter half of 2016, and will “leverage satellite technologies to get more Africans online,” according to a press release. It will use the upcoming AMOS-6 satellite, a $200 million, 5-ton satellite built by Israel Aerospace Industries. Facebook and Eutelsat say they will create a system specifically aimed at bringing connectivity to large swaths of Sub-Saharan Africa, and that the system will be “optimised for community and Direct-to-User Internet access using affordable, off-the-shelf customer equipment.”
