Speaking of WeChat, many people I know who don’t visit Weibo regularly anymore now are checking the sharing service on WeChat several times a day. Weibo for many people like me has become a place to search for certain news.

Weibo reported a 105% year-over-year increase in total revenue in the quarter, but still recorded a net loss of US$15.4 million. — Twitter has been reporting Non-GAAP operating profits since it went public in 2013.

As of last month (July 2014), WeChat had had 5.2 million public accounts, including subscription accounts who send subscribers contents (text, images or videos) and service accounts who do CRM or sell goods.

The regulation just issued is more targeted at subscription accounts, for it requires that public accounts who produce or repost news, especially political news, should hold licenses for producing and distributing news online. It also asks chatting apps to report on accounts who violate the regulation and turn over message records whenever required.

While asking for real-name registration, the regulation allows public accounts use whatever display names they like.

That Tencent’s stock price fell may reflect that some investors worried about regulatory risks, but in China many people believe it will have positive impact on WeChat, for it’s less likely messages offensive to the government will be spreading on it so that WeChat won’t be blocked all together.

この規制は実名での登録を求めている一方で、パブリック・アカウントに対し、どのような使用上の名前を使ってもよいとしている。

Tencentの株価下落は、複数の投資家が規制リスクを懸念したことの現れと見ることもできるが、中国の多くの人はWeChatにとってプラスの影響があると信じている。 なぜなら、政府を攻撃するメッセージが広まる確率が低くなり、結果としてWeChatが閉鎖されることはないからである。

There are also some specific new rules in today’s crackdown. The new provisions require messaging app companies to set up real-name registration for users (Update: A Tencent representative points out that ‘official’ accounts already require real-name signup accompanied by a photograph). Also, only approved media accounts with official WeChat accounts can post political news. There are still many vagaries in both those edicts. We’ve reached out to Tencent (HKG:0700), the maker of WeChat, for further details.

WeChat joins Weibo in being tightly controlled

China recently blocked two of the largest overseas messaging apps, such as KakaoTalk and Line. WhatsApp is not blocked, but it’s not commonly used in the country. WeChat is by far the nation’s top messaging app and is increasingly used as a broader social network for sharing news items and personal photos and thoughts.

WeChat, which grew popular in 2012, was initially remarkably free and uncensored – but that was back when it was mostly a person-to-person messaging app. But as the app itself expanded and people found new uses for it, authorities gradually weighed in on it. It’s been especially bad in the past few months. In March, WeChat was forced to clamp down on political content and ban the official accounts of several outspoken bloggers; then in May the app – and other messaging apps – had to stamp out what Xinhua called “illegal and harmful information” being spread.

2012年に人気の出たWeChatは当初、とても自由で検閲されることもなかった。しかしそれは個人間のメッセージングアプリだった頃。アプリ自体が成長して新たな利用法が見つけられるにしたがい、当局は徐々に介入するようになった。最近数か月は特にひどい。WeChatは3月に政治的な内容を取り締まるよう要請され、複数の著名なブロガーの公式アカウントを禁止させられた。5月にはほかのメッセージングアプリ同様、「不法で有害な情報」が広まっているとXinhuaが言う情報を削除しなくてはならなかった。

Xiaomi teases new Redmi Note phablet, to be announced today (UPDATED: price & release date)

Xiaomi founder Lei Jun announced a new Redmi Note – called the Hongmi Note in China – will be unveiled today. The founder has leaked specs in two recent posts about the Chinese phone maker’s budget phablet on Weibo.

So far, Lei has revealed the new Redmi Note will have 4G connectivity, 5.5-inch screen, 3100mAh battery, 2GB RAM, and weigh 155 grams. That makes it 10 grams lighter than the previous version, but the battery is also 100mAh smaller.

Xiaomi設立者のLei Jun氏は新しいRedmi Note (中国ではHongmi Note )を本日公表する。同氏はWeiboにて、中国電話メーカーの低価格ファブレットに関する最近の2つの投稿でスペックを漏らしていた。

これまでにLei氏が明らかにしたところによると、新しいRedmi Noteの仕様は4G接続、5.5インチ画面、 3100mAhバッテリー、2GB RAM、重量155グラムである。旧バージョンより10グラム軽量化されたが、バッテリーも同様に100mAh小さくなっている。

Update： Lei has said on Weibo the Redmi Note price will remain at RMB 999 (US$162) and will go on sale in China next Tuesday.

The original Redmi note sold 3.56 million units as of July, according to Lei.

Xiaomi last month also announced its new upcoming flagship phone, the Mi4, which will go on sale sometime this month, carrier pending.

Last year’s model, the original, went up for sale in China in May and cost US$129 for the cheapest version.

Xiaomi Launches Fourth-gen Flagship Android Phone and Fitness Band

Since its first flagship model was launched in August 2011, a total of over 57.36 million Xiaomi phones have been shipped as of today (The number is 52.3 million as of June 2014), according to the company.

Unsurprisingly, Mi 3, its third flagship phone launched in September 2013, is way less popular than Red Mi, a lower-spec and lower-cost model released two months before the Mi 3 launch but quickly gained traction, as you can see in the chart above. People don’t like Mi 3 for it’s more expensive, not well-designed, and the system doesn’t seem that stable.

Red Mi Note, a phablet launched in March this year, seems even more potential than Red Mi, for it’s way more cheaper and considered better designed than all of precious Xiaomi models. With 5.5″ HD IPS display, MTK octa-core processor, 3,100 mAh battery, the Red Mi Note was priced at 999 yuan (about US$160) at launch and now 799 yuan (about US$130) — less than half prices for Xiaomi flagship models.

But the company would continue to launch high-spec, higher-priced flagship models. It launches its fourth flagship Android phone today. It’s not much of a surprise that the model has better specs and the two models (16 G and 64 G) are priced the same as its brothers (RMB1999 for the 16 GB version and RMB1999 for 64GB). TDD/FDD – LTE models won’t be out before September.

It has a 5″ screen and the design looks familiar to some other smartphones (iPhone 5 with a bigger screen?), although the company put much emphasis on the design of the phone frame, as Lei Jun, CEO of the company, said at the launch event today.

As expected, the long-rumored Xiaomi fitness band is launched today as well.The company has been introducing accessories and appcessories, developed in-house or through companies funded by Xiaomi, to accompany its core products, mobile devices and smart home products. It won’t be surprising that more gadgets will be added later on.

予想されていたとおり、長らく噂されていたXiaomiのフィットネスバンドが同じく本日ローンチされる。同社は、内部開発もしくはXiaomiが資金提供する会社の開発による、コア製品、携帯端末、スマートフォンに付随するアクセサリーとアプセサリーを紹介している。 さらに多くのガジェットが追加されるのは驚くべきことではない。

The Chinese startup that produces the band is funded by Xiaomi, too. Like some of those Xiaomi accessories, it’s sold at cost, too. It’s priced at RMB79 (about US$13). But it’s so low that we cannot help wondering whether it’s thanks to the low cost manufacturing advantage China has or that the cost of building a fitness tracking product (hardware design and software) has been driven to this low.

The band is able to communicate with MIUI, the customized Android system powering all Xiaomi devices. So the band can, apart from tracking activities/sleep and working as an alarming device, unlock your Xiaomi phone. The tracking data will be stored in MIUI’s Cloud.

The strength of Xiaomi – Internet ecosystem

Xiaomi is a mobile Internet company, they never position themselves as a pure smart phone maker. For Xiaomi, a phone is just a device to a bigger Internet ecosystem.Similar with Apple’s iOS, iTunes and App Store, Xiaomi is building its own ecosystem with MIUI, which is built on top of Android. However for now, it seems that MIUI is a little hyped up as besides user interface (design theme), we don’t see much improvements in terms of functionality.

Xiaomiの強み – インターネット・エコシステム

Xiaomiは携帯インターネット企業で、 自社を純粋なスマートフォンメーカーと位置付けたことはない。Xiaomiにとって、電話は巨大なインターネット・エコシステムにとって1つのデバイスにすぎない。AppleのiOS、iTunes、App Store同様、XiaomiはAndroid上に構築されているMIUIで独自のエコシステムを作り出している。しかしながら現在のところ、MIUIはさらなるユーザインターフェイス(デザインテーマ)で少し浮かれているようだ。機能の点では大きな改善は見られない。

Most of the design themes are contributed by MI Fans, their strong group of supporters. MI Fans was taking shape since the early days of hunger marketing, dedicated for those proud owners of the much sought-after Xiaomi phone. MI Fans plays an important role for Xiaomi’s crowd-sourcing efforts, for example when they enter a new market, the local resources are being translated by MI Fans.

MI Credit on another hand is a token for MI Fans when they contribute to the platform, in which they can use it to buy virtual items like design theme.

デザインテーマの多くを生み出しているのはMI Fanという、同社の強力なサポーターグループだ。MI Fanはハンガーマーケティングの初期にできたもので、熱望されたXiaomi電話の誇るべきオーナーのために働くグループである。MI FanはXiaomiのクラウドソーシングの取り組みで重要な役割を果たしている。 たとえば新規市場に進出する際、現地リソースはMI Fanにより翻訳されている。

The Strength of Huawei – Stronger control

Huawei on another hand leverages on their long, strong history of manufacturing. As opposed to Xiaomi, Huawei has better control over the phone manufacturing line, hence arguably with better build quality.

Whenever Huawei enter a new market, they will build or rely on local warehouse and fulfillment facilities to ship out online orders. Therefore, they have an edge in terms of fulfillment speed and service over Xiaomi, who ships the units directly from China (at least for now).

Huaweiの強み – 強力なコントロール力

他方のHuaweiは、長期にわたるメーカーとしての力強い歴史がある。Xiaomiとは異なりHuaweiは電話製造ラインに対するコントロール力が優れており、間違いなく良質の品質を持つ製品を作ることができる。
