Xiaomi intends to ship 60 million smartphones this year, more than triple its count for 2013. The company recently began operations in Malaysia, it’s fourth market outside mainland China, and will likely enter India and the rest of Southeast Asia this year.

aCommerce just raised one of Southeast Asia’s largest series A rounds

Thailand-based ecommerce service provider aCommerce has just closed its series A venture capital round of US$10.7 million. Organized by its founding investor, Ardent Capital, the round was led by Bangkok-based Inspire Ventures with participation from NTT Docomo, Sumitomo Corporation Equity Asia Limited, Sinar Mas Indonesia, Asia Pacific Digital, CyberAgent Ventures, JL Capital, strategic angel investors, and key executive staff.

A validated business model

A few weeks ago, Alibaba invested US$249 million into one of aCommerce’s biggest competitors, SingPost. The company is Singapore’s national postal service which operates a division called SP eCommerce. Srivorakul says the deal validates his business model.

Tencent pulls in $2.95 billion in revenue in Q1 as WeChat gaming takes off

Chinese web giant Tencent (HKG:0700) had a blockbuster Q1, according to its new financial report today. Aside from hitting 396 million monthly active users on WeChat, Tencent managed to pull in revenues of RMB 18.4 billion (US$2.95 billion), which is up eight percent over Q4 2013 and up 36 percent from the same time a year ago.

Tencent acknowledged that WeChat and its social gaming platform gave a big boost to the company’s important gaming revenues.

Significantly, Tencent beat Wall Street estimates in Q1. As noted by Bloomberg’s Tim Culpan on Twitter, the results went beyond every single analysts’ expectations for this quarter:

・Online game revenues increased 23 percent QoQ to RMB 10.39 billion (US$1.67 billion). Tencent explained the growth was mainly driven by increased revenues from smartphone games integrated with WeChat and its QQ instant messenger service, as well as stronger PC gaming demand for titles such as Blade and Soul.

・Tencent’s Q1 operating profit was RMB 7.79 billion (US$1.27 billion), an increase of 64 percent QoQ or an increase of 54 percent YoY.

Korean file-sharing app Send Anywhere nabs $1M in funding from Rakuten

ESTmob, the Seoul-based team behind file-sharing app Send Anywhere (which we reviewed about a week ago) revealed today it has completed a US$1 million seed round led by Rakuten Ventures.

ESTmob cofounder Suhyuk Kang tells Tech in Asia that it will use the funding to expand its userbase around the globe and ramp up the app’s feature set.

Send Anywhere delivers a basic, somewhat mundane utility to device owners. After one downloads the app, a user selects a file he or she would like to send, and is then given a six-digit code (or a QR code). That code is then shared with the intended recipient, who then inputs it into the app on his own device.

Why would Rakuten Ventures, the investment branch of Japan’s largest ecommerce firm, sink cash into this convenient, if slightly un-sexy app? SaeMin Ahn of Rakuten Ventures states that there’s more to Send Anywhere than what meets the eye:

The team is amazing. To me, they understood critical utility in the emotional and economic sense. We take the act of sending files for granted, but if you look into the overall process, the current available options present surprising amounts of barriers that don’t actually need to be there – such as log-ins, messaging app compatibility, or limiting file size.

Ahn also tells Tech in Asia that current Googlers Andrew McGlinchey and Andy Warner have joined the round as angel investors and future advisors.

Andrew Woolner went to Osaka and taught 2 days of “Acting with Intention”, a compressed version of his regular acting class.
The venue was kind of expensive, so we could only afford to send one instructor.

In the fall semester, we ran Acting, Voice, Movement, and Stage Combat classes. Because of trouble finding a room in Yokohama, we ran the classes in Sagamihara at SAGAMIHAUS.

The YTG ensemble presented their 1st fully mounted show under the direction of guest director Thijs van Elten from Holland. THE HOUSE SHOW was a site-specific piece performed in a Tokyo living room. The show was presented in a mix of English and Japanese. The Japanese actors spoke Japanese and the English-speaking actor spoke English.

Andrew Woolnerは大阪へ行き、2日間にわたり「意志を持って行動する」という、通常の演劇クラスの短縮バージョンの授業を行った。
その会場は効果な類のものであったため、一人の講師しか派遣できなかった。
