How to Combine CRM Marketing and local/international audience?

Working with Curiosty China, the MB Arena has leveraged an all new marketing and CRM concept based on the messaging app WeChat. Understanding the specific China internet consumption needs, the idea was to create a premium customer experience before, during, and after the shows to increase daily communication with fans and sponsors.

The MB Arena communication does not only focus on the Chinese speaking audience. Around 30% of their customers are foreigners, or even more when international artists are performing.

It is making the sponsorship more attractive since sponsors know that they will be able to reach thousands of specifically targeted fans.

Users of Tmall’s set-top box in China next month will be able to watch shows and movies like Mad Men, Twilight, and The Hunger Games if they subscribe to the “Lionsgate Entertainment World” channel. A Lionsgate representative told Alizila that some of the studio’s video is already licensed to other video platforms in China, but this paid subscription service will give viewers “behind-the-scenes footage and premium content not available anywhere else in China.”

Alibaba’s first set-top box, the Wasu Rainbow, went on sale in September 2013.

Alibaba has jumped headlong into procuring exclusive content directly from production studios. Last month, it announced it would create a new financial product that allows anyone to invest as little as RMB 100 (US$16) and up to RMB 2,000 (US$320) in a select movie of their choice. Those deposits are bundled into the company’s wealth management and insurance products that pay a fixed interest rate.

The company also took a US$804 million majority stake in Hong Kong-based ChinaVision Media Group, which is responsible for several popular Chinese-language TV shows and movies. The company sunk US$1.22 billion in China’s most popular video portal Youku (NYSE:YOKU) in April. In the same month, it contributed to a US$1.05 billion investment in streaming media partner Wasu.

But the deal with Lionsgate comes at an uncertain time for STB makers. Yesterday, Techweb reported the State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television would try to ban unlicensed content distributors – mainly video portals like Youku, iQiyi, and LeTV – from being pre-installed on set-top boxes. This in turn would promote the handful of state-backed content providers, including CNTV, Hunan TV, and CIBN. The gap between pronouncement and implementation is always a big one in China, however, so set-top box makers and their video partners seem unphased.

Registrations open for online sale

Xiaomi prefers to sell via online flash sales, and the registrations for it in India started today. A few months ago, when it started selling the Mi3 in Singapore, the first batch of phones were snapped up in two minutes. Today, it set a new record when it launched phablet Redmi Note in the city-state – all of 5,000 units were sold out in less than a minute.

Xiaomi is teaming up with Flipkart to launch its handsets in India. If sales in Singapore and elsewhere are anything to go by, Mi3 units will fly off the shelves in no time.

Many companies have emerged from the fold in hopes of digitizing and modernizing the Polaroid’s enduring appeal, though none have caught on significantly. But Welomo, a Chinese startup based in Guangzhou, is making strides, and its founders proudly attribute its growth to WeChat – the popular mobile messenger that’s on almost every smartphone in China.

Chance Jiang, co-founder of Welomo, tells Tech in Asia that the flexibility in pricing helps broaden the use cases for the printers. Already, brands ranging from trans-continental hot pot chain Haidilao to telco China Unicom have purchased Welomo machines for marketing and entertainment purposes.

“Haidilao offered free printing services and they thought this would be an add-on that would allow the consumers and diners to share content with their friends,” says Jiang. “But later on they found out that the machine could generate revenue to cover the cost of the machine itself.”

Printing your own destiny

Welomo banks on China’s WeChat-drenched zeitgeist, but co-founder Mike Huang, who originally conceived of the company, has a respectable background in so-called online-to-offline technology. In 2003, before graduating from South China University of Technology, he attempted to start a company that let feature phones – the ones with the buttons and tiny screens – control washing machines. That project failed for obvious reasons, but Huang remained undeterred. He tasted success for the first time with a wireless printer for enterprises that caught on big with China’s logistics industry, but still yearned to create something bigger and consumer-facing.

Xiaomi’s upoming tablet, the Mi Pad, will go on sale in beta for the price of… 16 cents

Earlier this month popular Chinese phone maker Xiaomi announced it would venture into tablets with the upcoming launch of the Mi Pad, a 7.9-inch screen device that will cost RMB1499 (about US$240) at 16GB of storage. While the revelation came as no surprise, one unknown remained – founder Lei Jun gave no release date for the device.

While there’s still no telling when ordinary Chinese consumers can log on to Xiaomi’s website and pick up a Mi Pad, diehard fans will soon have a shot at snagging it for the price of RMB1 (about US$0.16).

According to an announcement on the company’s user forums, VIP members of Xiaomi’s online community can apply to receive a beta version of the Mi Pad starting on June 6. After filling out and submitting a form, early birds will pay the RMB1 along with 300 points that they’ve accumulated from their contributions to the community. As for who will actually receive a tablet, the post clearly states that it will only select members who have been active members of Xiaomi’s forums – wannabes and posers need not apply.
