12 Tips for Success in Chinese Social Media

We get inquiries all the time from companies that are looking to get into Chinese social media and wondering how to go about it. That’s a very complicated question, and the answer can vary quite a bit, but I came across this list of tips from Jin Pengyuan on Sina Tech’s new Entrepreneur column and it’s a damn good start. The full list has fifty tips, each the length of a Chinese weibo post, and it is definitely worth reading. But I thought I’d translate a dozen of the most important tips here for those who can’t read Chinese. (Note:In some cases, I have condensed or otherwise edited these tips for clarity, so this isn’t a direct translation. The emphasis is also mine.)

Don’t believe the crap about how much money one follower is worth, think about what your goal is in acquiring these followers. Even if your brand has some recognition in real life, you may not be able to beat a Guo Meimei. Eliminating the distance between you and your customers takes endless communication and time, and after all, isn’t time money?

Don’t think you’re going to become the next whoever, when you think like this you have already lost. Whether you’re a brand or a product or an actual person, are there ever two who are exactly the same? Also, don’t expect to become a success story one month after you enter social media. The people who promise you this are liars. On a long road know the strength of your horses, time reveals the true nature of people. Actually on entering social media, the first think you’ll learn about is enduring loneliness.

「第2の誰々」になろうなんて考えてはならない。そう考えた時点で、すでに負けだ。ブランドであれ、プロダクトであれ、もしくは実在する人であれ、同じものが２つとあるだろうか？それから、ソーシャルメディアに参入して1か月で、サクセスストーリーになると期待してはならない。そういう約束をする人は嘘つきだ。長いプロセスの間に、自分の力を知ることができるとともに、時間は人の本当の姿を明らかにする。事実、ソーシャルメディアに参入して、まず学ぶことは、孤独に耐えることだ。

Social networks are a mirror, so don’t be afraid to be criticized. The real truth can only come out when you’re actually communicating directly with your customers. Seeing yourself clearly is key here; if criticism is coming from your loyal followers then it’s quite accurate, and this is one of the reasons you want followers to begin with. Plus you can see through criticism what your competitors are up to, which is great.

If it’s a social media platform, then it has fake information and followers on it. Faking your way through things is simple and low-cost, but how can you do anything properly if you’ve become used to faking things? If you buy or trick your way into getting tens of thousands of followers, you will get hundreds of interactions a day, but this becomes a vicious cycle. The real customers you actually most want to communicate with will be driven off by the fake stuff.

As far as content goes, we all know that content marketing is good, but how can you write content? Is there such a thing as completely correct content? No, not unless your post just says ‘the sun rises every morning.’ Any content is going to get doubted, but if you put it through an auditing process [before posting], everyone has their own opinion and after it has been revised into oblivion, can it possibly have any personality left?

If all you want is follower retweets, having money is enough. You can partner with the platform, you can buy big retweet numbers, you can buy opinion leaders, you can give prizes out for retweets…but do your followers want the same things you do? And is your money unlimited? When you make an investment, you need a return, right? So you need to think clearly about what you want to do on social networks, that’s what’s most important. If you’re not sure what your goals are, then don’t be in any hurry to get into social media.

Now With Over 1 Billion Netizens, This is How Asia is Social and Mobile in 2012 [INFOGRAPHIC]

Let’s step back and take a look at the big picture of the web in Asia in 2012. We see internet penetration in the region has jumped from 24 percent last year, to 27 percent now. And with that comes a leap to just over a billion Asian netizens this year – 1.034 billion, to be precise. Mobile penetration in Asia has risen from 74 to 82 percent, and for many people it’s the primary mode of accessing the internet.

Yes, Facebook is still the region-wide king – not counting the massive weight of Chinese socal networks which tend to be used only in China. But Facebook’s throne is far from safe, we reckon, with more group messaging apps – like Whatsapp, KakaoTalk, Line, WeChat – ready to take away much of the activity that Facebook is used for. After all, the Facebook and Facebook Messenger apps are not as good as many of its rivals in terms of facilitating simple and fun chatting with friends. OK, here’s the full slideshow:

How difficult is the mechanism to withdraw money in other non-English speaking countries?

Willix: In India, we provide express withdrawal by directing it straight to the local banks. They will get the money within two or three days. PayPal, Moneybookers is probably the major third party withdrawal service that we are using – but unfortunately it’s not available for rupiah. You can even withdraw with a Freelancer debit card which we can send to you. You can withdraw from any MasterCard affiliated ATMs as well. If everything goes right, which happens for about 99.7 percent of users, you will be getting the money within seven days.

How about Identity theft issues? Some of our readers were hesitant to submit their IDs to Freelancer.

Willix: Absolutely not, essentially it will be deleted once we look at it. We make sure that the process is as safe as possible, so definitely no possible identity theft. The whole point is that we want to make sure that the money goes to the right person.

How does the customer service team in Indonesia work to help freelancers address such complaints?

Willix: There’s a live chat support for Indonesia now, in the Indonesian language. You can even email support@freelancer.com. We also have a concierge system that they can contact as well. The concierge is virtual, but they can speak bahasa too.

How are you going to develop the payment system in Indonesia?

Willix: So now you can deposit in rupiah through credit cards. Unfortunately, PayPal services don’t support the rupiah. You can do wire banking via HSBC to send money to banks anywhere within the country. We looking to essentially contact local banks – Permata, Bank Mandiri, KlikBCA. We can have a partnership with them, and withdrawal and deposits could be very easy.

Indonesia is the biggest investment that we’ve made. We have ten other languages now, including Tagalog in the Philippines, along with Spanish, German, and more. Turkey as well, we’re launching in Turkey next month.

What do you think are the most promising jobs that freelancers could do here in Indonesia?

Willix: I would imagine it is website building, sem, e-commerce. I believe that there are definitely a lot of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) here, as I said that 99.9 percent of all firms established in 2009 to 2010 are SMEs and most of them probably don’t know how to make a website.

Most industries are already digitized. If they haven’t, they will be digitized. Building websites, getting traffic for your website, and all of these jobs will be coming to Indonesia. That’s what we expect.

On the same day as your press conference, there was a labor strike in many areas protesting about outsourcing. Then you announced this platform for outsourcing. What do you say about that, and how do you see the economy in Indonesia?

Willix: I was really scared actually. I thought, why do you choose the same time? There’s a conspiracy! Just kidding! It’s a completely different thing. The GDP (PPP) in Indonesia is 16th in the world and it’s growing bigger. Indonesia is going to grow as big as Brazil, Russia, India, and China. I think it could be there in about ten years.
