That outsourcing strike – it’s a completely different thing. What I tried to emphasize about Freelancer.com is how freelancers in Indonesia could earn $100,000 here. We try to empower entrepreneurs too. The problem that [laborers] are facing doesn’t really exist in Freelancer.com. For us, we provide the convenience to work at home, to be able to work while being a part-time mom, digitize your business, and hence, grow your company further.

So it’s not about cheap labor?

Willix: Well, cheap is relative, right? In the US, building a website with $200 is cheap. But for us Indonesians, $200 is huge and you can finish the job in 3 days. So you can essentially earn up to $2,000 easily a month which is a really good money. It’s a really different thing.

How about illegal jobs in the site?

Willix: We’re making sure that the jobs posted are legal. We keep tracking them. We have 3,000 to 4,000 jobs posted a day. You can see how hard it is for us to sort every single project. But we try. For Freelancer.co.id, I’ve mentioned to my engineers to remove the ‘triple x’ projects. We are looking at it very extensively now. It’s a continuous process.

India’s somewhat delayed e-commerce emergence will see its online travel market grow in sales from $11.5 billion this year to an estimated $30.61 billion in 2016. That means the sector in India will nearly triple in size in the coming years, which represents the highest CAGR (compound average growth rate) among the BRIC countries. South Korea is the only interloper in the group with its stellar growth in the market:

eMarketer points out a great deal of differences among the BRIC nations in how they’ve taken to travel e-commerce: Brazil’s market is limited in social usage and dominated by domestic travel; Russia’s lack of enthusiasm for this sector is in contrast to its high GDP; India sees three-quarters of e-commerce taken up by travel bookings; and China is, well, massive.

India’s biggest online travel service is Makemytrip (NASDAQ:MMYT), while China’s Ctrip (NASDAQ:CTRP) and eLong (NASDAQ:LONG) carve up a large swathe of that market.

In China’s very mature online travel market, BingDian is one of a number of mobile-only startups aiming to disrupt the homegrown industry leaders, Ctrip (NASDAQ:CTRP) and eLong (NASDAQ:LONG). That puts it right up against other new apps like the Innovation Works-backed Hotel Finder. BingDian says it has seen half a million downloads of its iOS app in the first 150 days after launching in March this year.

中国のオンライン旅行市場がかなり成熟しているなか、BingDianはCtrip（NASDAQ:CTRP）やeLong（NASDAQ:LONG）などの国内大手企業を揺さぶろうとする数多いモバイル特化型スタートアップの１つだ。そして、Innovation Worksが支援するHotel Finderのようなその他の新しいアプリと競合している。BingDianは、今年3月のローンチから150日でiOS版アプリのダウンロードが50万を達成したと述べている。

But BingDian has a bit of a twist, as it claims to help hotel chains to offer discounts and benefits to loyal customers whilst still allowing them to book via the app. In theory, that makes it into a more attractive platform for major hotel brands. BingDian’s partners run the gamut from cheap business hotels like Hanting and FX right up to top-notch chains like Hyatt and Shangri-La. Plus, the app has auctions for some rooms, rather like with the American travel booking site Priceline.

Prior to this series A funding, BingDian and taken in two rounds of seed funding. Currently its service is only accessible via the iPhone app, and its Android counterpart has still not materialized but is said to be in development.

Report: China’s Net Users to Exceed 800 Million By 2015

According to a report released yesterday by China’s Social Sciences Academic Press, China’s internet users are expected to exceed 800 million by 2015. China already has more than a half-billion net users, and with smartphone and broadband penetration growing rapidly, SSAP’s prediction may be optimistic but it certainly isn’t unrealistic.

SSAP’s report says that more than a quarter of the internet users to be gained over the next few years will come from China’s countryside, where broadband and smartphone penetration rates are markedly lower than in cities.

報告：中国のネット人口、2015年までに8億人を超える

中国社会科学学術出版社（SSAP）が昨日発表した報告によると、中国のネット人口は2015年までに8億人を超えるとのことだ。中国にはすでに5億人を超えるネットユーザーがいるが、スマートフォンとブロードバンドの普及が急速に高まるなか、SSAPの予測は楽観的かもしれないが、決して非現実的なことではない。

SSAPは、今後数年でネットユーザーとなる人達の4分の1以上が、都会と比べてブロードバンドとスマートフォンの普及率が格段と低い中国の農村地区に住んでいる人達だと報告している。

The report’s predictions are based on official government numbers that put China’s net users at 538 million as of June of this year. Sustained growth is predicted because the costs of accessing the internet are going down (especially as cheap smartphones flood the market) and because China has more than 1.3 billion people, so the potential market for the internet is vast.

And what are these Chinese users doing online? A little over a month ago we took a look at a CNNIC report that broke down Chinese internet user habits — and how they’re changing — into a pretty detailed table. Here’s the scoop:

The SSAP report also says that China has more microbloggers than any other nation on earth, with 274 million total microbloggers as of the end of June. While impressive, that number is a bit of an embarassment for Sina Weibo and Tencent Weibo, both of which claim to have more than 300 million total users on their services alone. Clearly there are a lot of duplicate accounts and zombies.

India: A complete list can be found here. OliveTrips is unique in that it sends users EcoReports that highlight the environmental benefits and financial savings they have accumulated. A common trait among these companies is the use of SMS to facilitate communication between carpool users, no doubt due to low smartphone usage.

Philippines: Ridefind.ph, which emerged out of the second Startup Weekend Manila held this year, also aims to tackle traffic congestion. It’s currently only web-based.

Methodologically speaking, both investors and entrepreneurs need to get better at recognizing where companies are in the startup lifecycle and let results speaks for themselves. (The Startup Genome calls the developmental stages of the Startup Lifecycle Discovery, Validation, Efficiency and Scale.) By standardizing the necessity of going through the discovery and validation phase it will be clear in a few months that nobody wants another mediocre to-do list app, and investors can invest appropriate amounts so that these entrepreneurs don’t have the rope to hide in stealth and hang themselves.

This approach is practical and avoids unrealistic authoritarianism, like implying people shouldn't have the right to start a company. This does not tell Starstruck Entrepreneurs they can't pursue their flights of fancy; it simply lets gravity quickly pull them and their Hollywood halos back to reality, and towards work that actually matters. This cleans out the junk in the startup ecosystem — an ecosystem that powers tomorrow's economic future.

As the power of entrepreneurs increases, we would love see the community strive to remember why we do this. It's not about the fame, glory or money. It's about building products that transform the world and drive the humanity forward.

Bloomberg creating an American Idol-esque TV showbased on the the New York City session of TechStars; Bravo creating a full-blown reality TV showcalled "Silicon Valley"; and a surge of new technology companies offering their stocks on the public markets, from Facebook to Zynga, Groupon, Pandora and LinkedIn.

As a result of all the attention, we have a phenomenon TechCrunch has dubbed "The New Silicon Valley Douchebag." Everyone and their mother is now an angel investor, and it is safe to say the celebritization of entrepreneurship is only going to get stronger.

We need to start the conversation now about how to handle this double-edged sword, so that the soul of Silicon Valley doesn't get vaporized from the heat of the limelight.

Why is it a double-edged sword? On one hand, celebritization will attract a huge new wave of talent from around globe to Silicon Valley and inspire many impressionable young people to aspire to become an entrepreneur rather than a Wall Street banker or a Hollywood actress. This undoubtedly is a very good thing.

さて、この両刃の剣をどう扱うのかという話から始める必要がある。そうすれば、シリコンバレーの精神が注目の熱で消えてなくならずにすむからだ。

セレブ化がどうして両刃の剣なのか？ある面で、セレブ化は世界中から才能のある人を新たに数多くシリコンバレーに引きつけ、多くの多感な若者にウォール街の銀行マンやハリウッドスターになるよりも起業家になりたいと思わせる。これは間違いなくとても良いことだ。

The Silicon Valley ethos is a lot more empowering than the narratives most young people are being told around the world. A few months ago, we had a group of Danish Entrepreneurs over at our startup house who told us that when young people in Denmark talk about changing the world, most people tell them, "Who are you to try to change the world? Sit down. Go to school. Get a job. Learn your place."

I hope we abolish that narrative completely. But let's not swing the pendulum too far in the other direction and spread the delusion that starting a company is something anyone can do to get rich and famous quickly. Eric Ries has recently become fond of saying, "Entrepreneurship is not cool, it's not sexy and it's totally uncomfortable. It's boring and grueling, and that part is never part of the movie." And I don't expect it to be part of the Bravo Reality TV show either.

The celebritization effect has caused a meteoric rise in the type of person we are calling the "Starstruck Entrepreneur." This rise is actually dangerous to the health of the startup ecosystem. A few months ago, College Humor released this brilliant caricature of the Starstruck Entrepreneur that sadly hit a little too close to home.

These creatures seem to come in two types. The first type is an "idea guy" who saunters over from Hollywood ready to wow with you a next-generation social media analytics platform. Or maybe he's a self-proclaimed "business model and monetization expert" fresh off the MBA assembly line. This type has an annoyingly loud mouth, but is relatively harmless.

セレブ化の影響によって、あるタイプの人達が突如として急増している。私達はその人達を「スターに憧れる起業家」と呼んでいるのだが、こういう人達が急増していことは、健全なスタートアップのエコシステムにとっては実に危険だ。数か月前、College Humorが「スターに憧れる起業家」についての面白い風刺ビデオを発表した。悲しくも、すこし痛いところを突いている。

The second type of Starstruck Entrepreneur is far more dangerous. This type includes engineers and designers who have a lot of talent for building technology products, but, because they've been infected by celebritization hype, limit their ambitions to being able to say, "Hi, I'm the Founder and CEO of Self-Aggrandizing Apps." So instead of applying their talents to a company that is actually poised to solve an important problem and become a transformational company, they build another vapid iPhone app that nobody wants. As a result, many potentially transformational startups are inflicted with dysfunctional teams as a result of the depleted hiring pool.

２つめのタイプはさらに危険だ。このタイプにはテックプロダクトの構築に豊富な才能を持つエンジニアやデザイナーが含まれるのだが、彼らはセレブ化の熱に影響され、「こんにちわ、私はXXアプリの創設者でCEOです」と言おうとする野心を抑えている。だから、大きな問題を実際に解決し、トランスフォーメーショナル企業になるような企業に彼らの才能を活かす代わりに、誰も欲しがらない退屈なiPhoneアプリをまた作ってしまう。その結果、トランスフォーメーショナルになりうるスタートアップの多くが、雇用する人も見つからず、機能しないチームに悩まされている。
