I forgot to tell u I am using a vegetable tanned leather which does not have chemicals in the tanning process and looks very nice for the camden town, the colour is a bit more redish than the previous leather I used to have but also think is nicer and does not scratch easy (see the pictures), I am also using this leather for the wallets (see picture ). as I told you before I will send you the pictures of the bags when they get ready and you will need to approved them before I send them to you.

The story of Gengo’s Robert Laing (CEO, left) and Matthew Romaine (CTO, right) is a source of inspiration for many gaijin (foreigners) building a tech startup in Japan. As I sipped my green tea, Laing and Romaine told me how Gengo started. Their story is nothing short of amazing for a Tokyo-based startup. While Silicon Valley is great, Tokyo ain’t that bad after all.

“If we were in Silicon Valley, we would not have come up with the idea,” said Robert.

In 2009, the duo agreed to work on it.

“In Tokyo, we found more people who understand the idea,” said Robert.

In September 2009, Robert and Matthew raised $30,000 from friends and family to kick start business. Later in the same year, Gengo raised $900,000. In September 2011, it raised $5.25 million from Atomico, followed by a whopping $12 million in April 2013.

With a war chest of $19 million in total funding, Gengo stayed put in Tokyo. Many other Asian startups would have dived towards the Valley as the land promises more capital, talent, and opportunities.
