The first creator of the group is the “group host” and has the right to change the group name and group cover image. Any member in the group can also invite other friends to the group, but only the group host can oust a member out of the group. The host can also transfer the position to another member in the group of choice.

Though KakaoGroup is a separate app, members of a group can continue their conversation in KakaoTalk through the “go to group chatroom” option.

A few months back, we saw Israeli-based group chat app Hoozin pitch at our Startup Arena in Singapore. Sina also launched a similar group chat app late last month in China. WeChat likewise, has a group chat feature for up to 40 people, but doesn’t offer so many features as the new KakaoGroup. As of July, KakaoTalk counts 100 million in its user-base.

Freelancer is planning to launch in more countries and integrate more features and services by the end of this year. He also said that though he does not want to preempt anything, there will be partnerships with local stakeholders and companies soon.

For example, they are currently connected to the Indonesia freelancing community. He said, “We are assisting the organization with empowering Indonesian freelancers through skills development as well as information exchange. In the Philippines, we’ve also been sponsoring various tech events (hackathons, seminars, etc.).”

Kakaotalk app gets a makeover on Android, updated to v4.0

Popular chat app Kakaotalk has been updated to v4.0 on Android today, bringing with it a makeover that refreshes the interface.

There are no major new features in the update, but the revamp gives the Android version of Kakaotalk a fresh look thats a bit more minimal, a tad more ‘flat’, and more in line with how apps should look on Android 4.0+ (the OS, I mean). Which is a good thing. The app didn’t look too good before (the same can be said of Line and WeChat on Android), so it’s a welcome makeover. Here’s a comparison of the old vs new look:

Vancl – which sells its own brand of clothes, a bit like Japan’s Uniqlo – puts all this into its Vancl Star portal (pictured above), an interesting social commerce experiment where women can browse through photos of fellow customers wearing items from the site. It’s a mix of a social media site and e-commerce. While it does have a few male users, it seems mostly geared to female shoppers.

If you click on an photo on Vancl Star, you see the user’s own photo accompanied by a traditional e-commerce listing for the feature product, including the price and an ‘add to cart’ button.

The company introduced the new iPhone 5c, which has similar specifications to last year's iPhone 5, but comes in a new polycarbonate plastic case that's available in five new colors: red, green, yellow, blue and white. The iPhone 5c will run $99 for a 16-gigabyte model with carrier subsidy, or $199 for a 32-gigabyte capacity, and will also debut next Friday. Preorders for the iPhone 5c begin this Friday, Sept. 13.

U.S. Online Car Booking Service Uber To Accelerate Expansion In China After Shanghai Rollout

American online car booking service Uber planned to land in one Chinese city every three months from now on, according to Martin Lee, head of the company’s Asian team (report in Chinese). In addition to Shanghai, the first Chinese city that Uber launched service, Uber is prepping for headways in Beijing and Kong Hong.

As a car booking platform, Uber sealed cooperation deals with local taxi companies and share commissions with them. Uber’s cars are generally nicer than average taxies in China, including BMW 7-series, Audi A8, Mercedes S-Class, and therefore, the charges are much higher, about two to three times of that for the ordinary taxies. The company’s market strategy that eyes high-tier market avoids the competition with rising taxi apps as well as policy risks, since Chinese government stepped in earlier this year to regulate the market (report in Chinese).

Unsurprisingly, the supposed next-gen iPad mini shell bears no significant changes from the current model. There has been little to no talk of major design changes since iPad mini rumors began to circulate earlier this year. Most speculation has been concerned with internal upgrades, or more specifically, the inclusion of a Retina display.

Whether the next-gen mini will boast a high-resolution screen like its bigger brother is a hotly contested topic, though reports from August claim Apple's display suppliers are already ramping Retina panel production for a fall launch.

Big Chinese Internet Companies Busy Building Online Education Platforms

Say it once again: China’s education market is huge and is moving online. While local startups are building online education services by modeling western ones or improving the must-criticized existing education system in China (they have raised so much money in the past half a year alone), local Internet giants are building platforms to accommodate all of them.

Tabao’s ultimate goal is to have every business to sell products, physical or virtual, on its online marketplace. Nobody would feel surprised at the launch of a marketplace for selling online courses or offline events recently but wonder what took it so long.

It is reported that the sales of education-related products on Taobao before the launch of Taobao Classmates was one billion yuan (about $160 mn) in the first half of 2013.

YY Education

YY tries to expand its online rich-media interactive business from music show to other categories, talk show, game broadcasting, and education. It’s existing infrastructure is enough for teachers to give live classes, interact with students real-time through text and voice messages and take payments.

The music show business is a major revenue driver for YY that the company takes cuts of virtual item sales. Eric He, YY’s CFO, estimated YY Education could generate revenues in two years during Q2 2013 earnings conference call. His pointed out that YY Music started monetization in 2011 and accounted for 30% of the company’s total revenues in 2012.

William Ding, CEO of NetEase, has been bullish on online education. His company, with over 90% of the total revenues from online games though, tapped into online education as early as in 2010 with a launch of Open Courses program which provides educational videos for free. It licensed recorded video courses from US universities and hired translators to add Chinese subtitles. Coursera’s courses for users in China are hosted by Netease.

In late 2012 the company launched Cloud Class, a platform for users to take online classes and literally study there. Youdao Dictionary, an digital dictionary under Netease, also has a feature for Chinese users to learn foreign languages.
