HocMoi works with companies like Udemy, which specializes in selling skills courses online, and pays a licensing fee for the content, then HocMoi has a content team which translates the courses into Vietnamese. Founder of HocMoi, Tran Ngoc, says one of the problems he has seen is Vietnamese experts are not so forthcoming about their expertise.

Since the culture of sharing is not exactly there yet, HocMoi is working on seeding content from foreign courses first. Currently, we only have three Vietnamese courses of the total 31 that we are offering. The rest is all from sites like Udemy.

HocMoi , which means “new learning”, is different from DeltaViet in that it takes foreign courses and puts them online. The latter startup, on the other hand, focuses on getting Vietnamese courses on its platform.

Since HocMoi’s August launch, the site has accumulated just over 100 paying users on the site. In contrast, DeltaViet has over 500 paying students. This likely indicates that the market for online courses remains small, so at present it’s not clear yet if HocMoi or DeltaViet will be successful. Still, the need for education in Vietnam is palpable: education in Vietnam is struggling to keep up with the global trends and an economy that is in desperate need of an educated workforce.

Unfortunately, it’s not clear yet if such models can scale. Unlike DeltaViet, which collects over 90 percent of its revenue from telco scratch cards, HocMoi collects 100 percent of its money from the local NganLuong payment platform. Both models still have not gained widespread traction, and this will continue to be a limiting factor in online education as a whole.

In the media conference, MiCab says it has already partnered with two malls and a BPO firm in metro Cebu, which will offer “MiCab zones” designed as pick up areas for MiCab users. Apart from the fact that MiCab charges customers only PhP 5 (about US$ 0.12) on top of the fare, the app will also work even when there is no data connection. The app’s Android variant will transmit and receive relevant information through SMS.

At present, MiCab already runs on 60 of Ken Taxi company’s fleet of 200 cabs, although the startup is planing to fast-track its expansion into other cities, such as Metro Manila and Davao, through franchising, reports Bobby Suson, co-founder and CEO of Nextix, Inc., which has provided seed funding to MiCab earlier this year.

MiCab is a free download for Android devices. iOS and Windows Phone variants are in the works.

Singapore firm Prototype Asia sees potential in prototyping market

Singapore-based 3D printing and prototyping startup Prototype Asia shares more about current challenges, next steps and how investors think there’s a bubble.

Is 3D printing the next big thing or will it just be a bubble? Awareness of the industry is on the rise here in Singapore, with startups like Pirate3D getting its consumer-centric printer successfully crowd funded on Kickstarter and Nanyang Technological University gearing toward the age of manufacturing with a US$30 million research centre.

Lending expertise to clients

With startups, bigger companies and advertising agencies as clients, Guillaume found the same problem facing all three. Prototype Asia has quite a good mix of customers, and is able to help users improve ideas and make feasible items. He said, “They have an idea about hardware but don’t really know how to [launch their idea] so we help them with that. We help them with proof of concept so they can show to investors. Later on, we can help them with production prototype.”

For the big guys, it’s not that different. Prototype Asia has both the speciality and experience to help the corporate companies, which might not have the expertise in building hardware.

De Lazzer cited they do not have competitors in Singapore or in Southeast Asia yet; however, there are similar companies in Europe and the US. One would be Stratasys, which has opened its Singapore office on October 1.

At the recent Inside 3D Printing Conference which was held in Singapore, it is evident that the growing interest signifies an impending boom of 3D printing and prototyping services.

Freelancer files IPO on Australian Securities Exchange to raise US$14M

Global outsourcing marketplace Freelancer.com has stepped up its game with filing of IPO, instead of heading for an acquisition.

Freelancer.com, the Australia-based outsourcing platform, today announced filing for initial public offering on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). Known on the stock exchange as FLN, the company disclosed that it is raising A$15 million (US$14.2 million) with 30 million new shares about to be offered to the public at A$0.50 a share.

Line has also roped in Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif, as its brand ambassador. She will be seen in new the TV ad campaign on the eve of Diwali, India’s festival of lights, starting on October 11. Line will also have India-exclusive Katrina Kaif stickers. This is in line with the app’s tradition of partnering with well-known celebrities.

In addition, Line has partnered with Sony India to be preinstalled on smartphones such as the Xperia Z1, Xperia C; Line and Sony will come out with a common ad campaign. Meanwhile, Sony’s music arm, Sony Music Entertainment, will open a brand account on Line to push its music line-up.

Zookal raises US$550K for student textbook rental portal, eyes SEA

Australia’s student textbook rental site, Zookal, has just raised US$550,000 in its latest investment round and is eyeing Southeast Asia next.

Sydney-based textbook rental company Zookal has just announced its latest funding round of US$550,000 led by former chief financial officer of US student hub Chegg, Omer Regev, who is currently the CFO of Gemini Israel Venture Funds, and Silicon Valley’s Filtro Investments. This round brings total the investment in the company to US$1.98 million.

When smartphones were on the rise a couple of years ago, manufacturers of Shanzhai feature phones down in Shenzhen area in South China picked it up quickly, shipping a variety of smartphones to Chinese users’ needs. Most of them adopted the system-on-chip solutions by Taiwan-based MediaTek Inc., or MTK.

Not only for smartphones, MTK has been also providing solutions for tablets, smart TVs, set-top boxes, GPS units, Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth devices, etc. It’s not difficult at all for it to pull together solutions for watch-shaped smart devices.

The categories the company would like to cover include healthcare, eldercare and sports.

Xiaomi Reportedly To Launch Smart Watch Before Year End

Chinese handset maker Xiaomi Technology has started the mass production of a home-grown smart watch, PingWest reported, citing people familiar with the matter from Shenzhen-based manufacturer. The report added that Xiaomi will unveil and ship the new smart watch to customers before the year-end (report in Chinese).

Powered by custom MIUI, Xiaomi smart watch will be compatible with Xiaomi Phone as an accessary. PinWest added that the new smart watch will be priced much lower than all the domestic smart watches that currently announced their prices.
