Singapore-based service for Indian expats, OurHealthMate.com announced closing a SG$560K (US$440K) seed funding round. The round was led by Bimal Shah, head of an international syndicate of business angels; it was supported by Singapore-based Benjamin Tsai and a second international angel syndicate led by high frequency trader Ben Ball.

Over 2,000 doctors later, patient management app gets $440k funding boost

OurHealthMate, a Singapore and India-based startup with an electronic health record (EMR) system for doctors and an online marketplace for medical checkups, has come a long way since it was an incubatee called MyFitnessWallet at startup accelerator JFDI last year.

Then, it only had six clinics as customers. Now, the site has over 2,000 doctors and 700 medical centers listed from over 50 cities in India, with an additional 30 hospitals joining each week. This early traction was enough to secure a $440,000 seed round led by Bimal Shah, along with participation from Benjamin Tsai, Ben Ball, and other angel investors.

OurHealthMate is more than a system for doctors, it also enables people to search, book, and pay for health checkups on behalf of their families through the website. They can also receive feedback directly from the health practitioner.

It’s ideal for overseas Indians who are concerned about their aging parents’ well-being back home in India and would like a way to keep track of their health. According to the startup, 22 million non-resident Indians remit $10 billion back to India to pay for their parents’ healthcare. However, these elderly citizens often fail to make and keep medical appointments for themselves.

From Chile to India

Before joining JFDI last year, the startup made it to Startup Chile, an accelerator funded by the Chilean government. Doctors came to them saying there’s a huge market for health monitoring.

The company’s flagship product is a 6.3g square wearable sensor powered by 3D motion technologies. According to data released by the company, the sensor contains a powerful ARM processor and multiple sensors, with a battery life of eight hours and enough memory to store information for 200,000 swings at 1,000 data points per second.

Crowdfunding ecosystem doesn’t seems like a place that copycats can get away with. Backers are so important to the ecosystem. It’ll be interesting to see the reactions of backers whenever they find out the idea they back with money and love is actually stolen from elsewhere. Greedy venture capital may don’t care to invest in a mere copy, but backers of ideas on platforms like Kickstarter are not only for certain products or returns. The Chinese backer of Pressy said he’d ask for refund right away if the product turns out to be a counterfeit.

6 civic-minded startups from Pakistan’s i2i Accelerator are looking to solve real problems

Pakistani startup incubator Invest2Innovate – also known as the i2i Accelerator – graduated its second ever batch earlier this month. As with its first batch in early 2013, the newest incubatees are a nice group of civic-minded startups that are tackling serious local issues in realistic ways.

Most of the six startup graduates are still not fully formed, and half of them are currently making do with Facebook brand pages before they launch properly.

This aims to combat the deadly problem of counterfeit medical drugs. With as much as 50 percent of pharmaceutical products in Pakistan either counterfeits or of unacceptable quality, Asli Goli will make it possible to check authentic drug products via SMS.

It will be done via scratch labels with unique serial numbers provided to participating pharmacies. There will be costs to the retailers – but not consumers – and pilot projects are planned on some best-selling drugs in Karachi, Lahore and Faisalabad.

The target is to get the rate of counterfeit products down to 35 to 30 percent within 2 years.

5. Asli Goli

Here’s another one engaged in education. Amal Academy is a non-for-profit professional skills academy that will focus on helping the disadvantaged find quality jobs – or eventually start their own businesses.

After running pilot projects in Lahore and Karachi – as well as in Mumbai and New Delhi over in India – the startup received $125,000 in funding from Stanford GSB’s Social Innovation Fellowship.

6. Amal Academy

Collisionable Networks was among the 14 selected startups for Berkeley’s acceleration program, wherein it had to undertake Webex-based interactive sessions over six weeks. “During those sessions, we were asked to interview real customers and solve real problems using a prototype of our product,” says Sharma.

Today, Coillisionable has a small five-member team. The aim is to raise $250,000 over next few months to scale up operations and grow its technology team.

In terms of a business model for Hashtaag, Sharma says he has couple of options. One is making it into an online marketplace version of its crowdsourced ideas concept. Another option is more radical, Sharma explains:

Square-like Chinese startup QFPay swipes $16.5 million in series B funding

QFPay, maker of a Square-like gadget for taking e-payments via a smartphone, has secured series B funding worth $16.5 million, 36Kr reports today.

It hasn’t been revealed who the investment is from, but it’s worth noting that QFPay’s first major round of funding back in early 2013 was led by Sequoia Capital.

QFPay’s main product is QPOS, which looks like a mini calculator. It connects wirelessly to Android tablets or phones, or iPhone or iPad; or there’s a wired version that hooks up to a PC. It can be used by retailers of all sizes to take credit card or bank card transactions.

QFPay – one of China’s leading startups in this business-oriented e-payments sector – claims to have 110,000 businesses using its gadget right now. That’s up from 10,000 when we looked at the company during its previous funding round. Its QPOS service sees over RMB 100 million (more than 17 million) processed in payments each day.

But this startup is up against rivals both big and small. There are similar products aimed at retailers, such as Lakala and iBoxPay, plus web giants such as Alipay (by Alibaba) and WeChat (by Tencent) are pushing consumers into mobile payments via their own e-payment platforms.

Avast East Asia! Pirate3D sails heartily to Japan and South Korea

Pirate3D launches Buccaneer 3D printer in Japan and South Korea in partnership with Keienu Trading Company and Alien Technology respectively

Pirate3D, a 3D printing startup seed-funded by Red Dot Ventures and incubated by the Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES), has signed a distributorship agreement with Keienu Trading Company to bring its Buccaneer 3D printer to the Japanese market from June 2014.

“We are very excited. Japan is a key market for Pirate3D, and this is a huge step for the company,” said Roger Chang, CEO, Pirate3D.

Founded in late 2012, Pirate3D had launched a wildly successful crowdfunding campaign for the Buccaneer 3D printer, on Kickstarter in late May 2013, raising over US$1.4M from 3,520 contributors by the time it closed on June 29.
