The roles of developer and system administrators were separate and defined: developers made decisions about developer tools like source code management and issue tracking (Git, Jira), and system administrators (server admins, storage admins, network admins) managed production and infrastructure standards. However, with the move to clouds like Amazon Web Services (AWS) have given developers choice in what infrastructure services they can use.

How did we get here? Let’s take a quick look at the evolution of the data center.

The three ages of the data center

Physical-defined infrastructure (~1985 to 1999)
During the rise of the client/server era, corporations were moving from mainframes to mini-computers to a powerful server computers coupled with personal computers. This was the age when hardware design and hardware vendors drove IT strategy. Engineers debated CPU architectures (RISC vs CISC), Power vs X86 vs SPARC and the strategic vendors of this generation were companies like Sun Microsystems, IBM, and HP.

Software-defined infrastructure (~2000 to 2014)
In physical defined infrastructure, software was usually paired with hardware. In the early 2000s, we saw the Intel X86 architecture win out in the CPU layer, allowing servers and systems to standardize. Once you have hardware standards, the software ecosystem grew up around these servers started to decouple the logical from the physical. Operating systems like Windows and Linux became the layer to which software interacted with hardware.

Eventually, VMware pioneered the idea of software virtualization, which enabled IT administrators to render virtual computers, disks, and networks all in software. Riding the power of Moore’s Law, VMware turned physical defined infrastructure into software-defined infrastructure. You can trace the evolution from physical to virtual just by looking at how profit margins flowed from system vendors like Sun to the winers of the software-defined infrastructure age like VMware, Microsoft, Red Hat, and Intel as the de facto CPU standard. VMware moved from virtualized compute to storage (vSAN) and then networking (NSX).

If VMware pioneered the idea of software-defined infrastructure, the web-scale giants like Google and Facebook perfected it. Living by the adage “software will eventually work, hardware will eventually fail,” they saw the value of using commodity hardware and software to make unreliable hardware reliable.

The impact of this software-defined data center can be seen by the fate of some of the leaders of the physical defined infrastructure age: Dell went private, IBM sold its x86 server line to Lenovo, and HP is undergoing an identity crisis right now.

Developer-defined infrastructure (2015 to ????)
Welcome to the age of DDI, where developers are making decisions on how, what, and where their applications should run. DDI is the natural evolution of software defined infrastructure. The power of turning hardware into software is partly the separation of logical from physical into software, but mainly the fact that once you have hardware represented in software, you can treat hardware like any other piece of code.

You can move it, you can program it, you can write programs for it. For example, on AWS, everything has an application programming interface (API) and can be programmed: storage, compute, networking, security, etc. Today, developers need to think like IT and operations, and IT administrators must enable developers to make these infrastructure choices and not constrain them. With this rise of devops and cloud, developers are looking for technologies to build, run, and manage their applications that support DDI: If VMware was the platform for the last 15 years, then companies, like Docker, could be the platform for the next 15. In particular, Docker supports:

Mobile ad spending to hit $100B in 2016 and become the biggest digital ad market

Mobile ad spending is on a tear. It will top $100 billion in 2016 and account for more than 50 percent of all digital ads for the first time, according to market researcher eMarketer.

More than $101.37 billion will be spent on ads served in 2016 to mobile phones and tablets worldwide. That’s a 400 percent increase from 2013. From 2016 to 2019, mobile ads will nearly double again, rising to $195.55 billion. That figure will account for 70.1 percent of all digital advertising as well as more than one-quarter of total media ad spending worldwide.

モバイル広告は2016年に1,000億ドルに達し、最大のデジタル広告市場となる

It’s all about the number of consumers adopting mobile devices. As that number soars, marketers are chasing consumers into mobile markets. Next year, eMarketer estimates, there will be more than 2 billion smartphone users worldwide, more than one-quarter of whom will be in China.

The number of tablet users worldwide is growing more slowly than the global smartphone audience. But tablets will reach more than 1 billion users in 2015. eMarketer said that in many emerging and developing markets, consumers are often accessing the Internet mobile-first and mobile-only, driving marketers to mobile advertising.

つまりは、多くの人がモバイル端末を使用するようになるということだ。その数が増えれば、マーケターは消費者をモバイル市場で追い求める。eMarketerの予測によると、来年にはスマートフォンユーザは20億人を超えるという（そのうちの4分の1は中国人）。

The U.S. and China will drive mobile ads in the short term. In 2016, U.S. advertisers are expected to spend $40.2 billion on mobile ads, more than doubling the total from 2014. In China, advertisers will spend $22.1 billion next year, triple the amount spent in 2014. In both countries, mobile will become the majority of all digital advertising next year.

Next year, Canada and Australia will both surpass South Korea to become sixth- and seventh-largest mobile ad markets, respectively.

By 2018, several of the top growth markets will have made significant gains. That year, Brazil will jump three spots from 2015 to become the ninth-largest mobile ad market globally, and Indonesia will make the largest gain, rising from No. 21 this year to No. 12 in 2018. However, despite India’s massive mobile user base, the market will continue to lag in mobile ad spending, failing to eclipse $1 billion before 2018.

Israel’s Emu is one app to be integrated into Facebook Messenger

At Facebook’s F8 developers’ conference, the company announced 40 app developers that will be integrated with Messenger. Emu, a two-week old app, is one of the lucky few

At Facebook’s F8 developers’ conference last Wednesday, the company made a dramatic announcement.

Facebook is transforming its Messenger app into a platform, enabling “developers to easily build apps that integrate with Messenger; so that the more than 600 million people who use Messenger can find new, fun ways to express themselves with GIFs, photos, videos, audio clips and more.”

It looks as though Messenger, which many observers felt could not justify its existence as a stand-alone app, has now become Facebook’s most pampered child, attracting a lot of its parent’s attention and resources. One of the companies expected to assist in this transformation is Israel’s Homage, the six-person team behind the Emu app.

Making Messenger cool

Facebook really wants Messenger to be your preferred messaging app. To that end, it is integrating about 40 apps into the platform, apps that let you play with a variety of content and formats. Instead of just boring text, some photos and prepackaged emojis, there is an abundance of cutesy, kitschy bells and whistles.

Emu allows you to create personalised animated stickers using a selfie. Emu’s parent company, Homage officially launched the app at the TechDate event on March 15 at the INTV conference in Jerusalem.

Messengerをカッコよくする

To create a sticker “or emu,” as the app calls them, just snap a selfie, align your head with the outline, and then the fun part begins as you choose from a wide variety of animated backgrounds.

For instance, you can give yourself a pair of animated angel’s wings, devil’s horns, rainbows, hearts or even teddy bears. Once you’ve chosen the background, you can send your emu through Messenger. Your friend doesn’t have to have installed Emu to view the special effects of your head festooned by teddy bears, but should your friend choose to reply in kind, he will be given the option of installing the app.

ステッカーあるいは「emu（このアプリではこう呼ばれている）」を作るには、まずセルフィーを撮り、頭をアウトラインに合わせる。すると、面白パーツが現れるので、数あるアニメーション付きの背景から選べばよい。

At present, the app is only available for iOS. However, the developers told Geektime that they are hard at work on an Android version which should be available in the coming weeks.

An app in its infancy

The company behind Emu is Homage Technology Ltd, founded in 2013 by Tomer Harry, Nir Hanes and Yoav Caspin. Since its founding, the company has raised several hundred thousand dollars from a private angel investor as well as the office of the Israeli chief scientist. The company has six employees and is situated in Tel Aviv’s Montefiore neighborhood.

Speaking to Geektime, Hanes says the Emu app was launched in the iTunes store just two weeks ago, and that’s why they were surprised to get a call from Facebook. Since Facebook’s announcement at the F8 conference, Hanes says they’ve seen a surge of percentage points in the thousands of people installing and using the app.

What is their business model? Hanes says the company plans to partner with content brands like Hello Kitty and others and charge users money for branded stickers.

In addition, movie studios that want to market a new film can pay Emu to feature their character in the app.

Some of the highlights include Action Movie FX, which will allow you to add special effects like explosions and aliens to videos you shoot and send; Camoji, an app that lets you create GIFs with your camera; FlipLip Voice Changer, which allows you to send voice messages that alter your voice; Giphy, the world’s largest database of animated gifs; Hook’d, a social karaoke app; Meme Generator, which helps you create graphics you hope everyone shares; and one of our favorites ClipDis, which allows you to type a text and get a mashup of famous movie and TV actors saying the text, with each person saying a different word.

Goodgame Studios quietly becomes one of Germany’s biggest game companies

Chances are you haven’t heard of Goodgame Studios. But the game studio in Hamburg has become one of Germany’s biggest game companies, with more than €202 million, or $220 million, in revenues 2014. The company has more than 245 million users for its online and mobile games like Goodgame Empire. It closed 2014 with 1,168 employees, up 92 percent from a year earlier, and now its numbers are past 1,200.

Now the company hopes to become a bigger player on the global stage of the free-to-play mobile gaming business.
