5th day of May is celebrated as Boys' Day in Japan.
Various religious activities praying for the good growth of boys are observed around that day.
"Koinobori" - the carp flying is one of them.
Carp Flying is based on a Chinese folklore which says that a carp becomes a dragon when it climbs up a water-fall. It indicates the wish of a healthy growth and successful progress.
Again, it also indicates the prayer to the God, asking for good protection of the new born boy.
This tradition is said to have started during Edo period, which is almost traced back to 18th century A.D.

The duration of flying the carp differs depending on the region.
There are people who fly them for a few days until 5th of May and
there are a few who fly throughout April and May.
