Here is a vintage and rich looking German made Symphonion Brevete Music Box with twenty 8 ¼” metal discs. This box plays a rich, mellow sound with clear and crisp highs and soothing lows. The box has two sets of combs and one is stamped “47143.” The front bottom case has a strong lever wind arm. The box runs smoothly and correctly. The inside top cover has its original “Symphonion” paper insert label. The top has patriotic German and U.S. detailing. 　

これは年代物で豪華な見た目のドイツ製Symphonion Breveteのオルゴールで、20枚の8.25インチの金属製ディスクが付属します。このオルゴールはクリアできびきびした高音と、穏やかな低音とともに豊かな音色を奏でます。オルゴールは２つのセットから成っており、一つは「47143」という印が押されています。前底部のケースには、丈夫なぜんまい巻きレバーが付いています。オルゴールはスムーズで正確に動作します。内側の上部のカバーはオリジナルの「Symphonion」のラベルが貼られています。上部にはドイツとアメリカの愛国的な文章が書かれています。

I played several discs and they sounded beautiful. If you play this downstairs, you can still hear it clearly upstairs! The dark wooden case is in very nice condition, with only typical scratches and bumps, nothing serious. It has not been cleaned or altered in any way. Some of the disc titles include: “Bridal March”; “Light Cavalry March”; “Air out of Herolds Zampa”; “Vagabonds March”; “Out of the Twins” (superb sound); “La Belle Elise”; “Sweet Heart”; “Artist Life Waltz” and many more. With the lid closed, the box measures 10” square and sits a little over 6 ½” high. With the top lid open, it sits 14 7/8”. This is a very nice piece!

Taobao’s Daily Deals Site Grows Up, Spins Off

Alibaba has today announced that its group buy site, Taobao Ju Hua Suan – meaning Taobao group bargains – is going to be spun off as a separate company. It has its own daily deals – which come from vendors as diverse as restaurants and travel agencies – and also serves as an open platform for other sites to sell their deals.

Its biggest rival by name is Tencent’s (HKG:0700) QQ Tuan; in terms of actual traffic and deals sold, its closest competitor seems to be Lashou, the much smaller start-up which is looking for a chance to IPO in the US next year.

Why make Ju Hua Suan an independent company within the Alibaba Group right now? An Alibaba spokeswoman explained to us:

Yesterday we looked at a new report which shows that 42.2 million of Chinese 500 million netizens used group buy sites in the past six months. Despite all that enthusiasm for bargains, a number of the indie sites are hurting – or simply over-hired in the early stages – and have been cutting staff in recent months. But the deals portals of China’s two web giants, Tencent and Alibaba, seem to have been immune.

This pen was pawned used and has been visually inspected and found to be in good condition. There is wear from previous use. The sterling silver roller ball barrel is scuffed and scratches from previous use. There is some tarnish. A good and proper polishing should clean this pen up nicely. The granite lower barrel is in good condition with fine blemishes. The sliver accents also could do with a good polishing. The hallmarks on the cap state: “Ag 925”. There are a few smaller hallmarks that we could not make out. The center of the cap is adorned with a star shaped crystal.

The silver clip is hallmarked “Germany Metal” and “Pix®”. The center ring on the granite barrel is marked “MONTBLANC MEISTERSTUCK”. The cartage is Mont Blanc 510 black ink cartage.
