Translation

1. I want to know whether or not Sherry, the female dog, is suffering from pains because she is breathing heavily. (She has been taken to hospital regularly since April, and has received no clear diagnosis. I am concerned that she is in pain.)

2. I wonder if Sherry is feeling pains in the legs and lower back. (She has been under medication for her legs and lower back pains for about a year. Sherry sometimes limps her legs because of the failing neurotransmission. She takes medicines everyday. I want to know if she is in pain.)

3. Sherry sometimes wets herself while sleeping, and she becomes restless because she is afraid that she might be told off. I want to tell her that I am not angry at her. (When she was younger, she often peed whenever her desire was not fulfilled, and at that time, I told her off because she did that on purpose.)

Grameen had never been replicated in such harsh and Arctic conditions. It was a learning experience for us as much as for them. I was invited to visit these projects in northern Norway, and was astonished at what I saw: another social transformation, similar in scope to what we are seeing in Bangladesh, but of a radically different nature. Now for the first time the women of the Arctic Circle have access to credit. And thanks to the programme, they have a community support group, people who can help them and give them advice. Before, these women had no opportunity to use their talents.

While they waited for their fishermen husbands or fathers to return from sea, there was little to occupy them, and almost no social or commercial activity to speak of, so that they became extremely lonely. Since the girls were not returning, the boys started leaving too. The same problem of depopulation was also occurring in northern Finland and in the nearby region of northern Russia. But thanks to the ceaseless efforts of Bodil Maal, the government of Norway decided to try a Grameen project through their fisheries department in order to give the women some commercial activity to help keep them on these Islands and help make their lives there less lonely and more meaningful.
