Qihoo 360 Releases Mobile Messaging Service Kouxin

Qihoo 360, the Nasdaq listed internet security software vendor, delivered its own solution to mobile messaging with the debut of a kik-like service: Kouxin(口信, means oral message in Chinese).

According to Hu Hao, the vice president of Qihoo, Kouxin is an address book-based social and communication tool that focus on friends and real connections. The product which supports iPhone, Android and Symbian can let users send text messages, voice messages and pictures for free.

Qihoo 360の副社長であるHu Hao氏はKouxinは友人や実社会でのつながりを重視した、住所録を基本としたソーシャルコミュニケーションツールであるという。iPhone、Android、Symbianに対応する同ツールを使うと、ユーザーはテキストメッセージ、ボイスメッセージと写真を無料で送ることができるという。

Actually, as we mentioned before, there’re tons of similar services in China at present while a few of them have done serious “micro-innovations” like with the adding of LBS feature, so late comer like Kouxin without strong user base in place might see frightening competition in such an area.


The unique edge of Kouxin lies on its “reliability” and “security”. Hu said that, under certain conditions that users will miss out on new messages due to network coverage problems, whereas Kouxin can solve the problem and make sure users get what they should get, be it sms, voice messages or pictures.

以前述べたように、現在中国ではこの種のサービスは数多く提供されているが、位置情報機能を追加して「マイクロ革命」を成し遂げたような企業はごくわずかで、一足遅れて参入するユーザー数の少ないKouxinのようなサービスは業界で苦戦を強いられるだろう。

Kouxin独自の強みは「信頼性」と「安全性」にある。Hu氏によると、ユーザはある種の状況では電波の状況などの問題からメッセージを見落とすことがあるが、Kouxinではその問題が解消されユーザーがSMS、ボイスメッセージや写真などを確実に受け取れるという。

The rules of commerce in China are changing as consumers increasingly have access to the feedback of previous customers and clients. Businesses that can’t keep up — or that insist on sticking to the old ways — may find themselves left behind by newer, more agile, and more customer friendly corporations.

That would be a good thing.

消費者が以前の顧客やクライアントの反応を得ることができる機会が多くなり、中国の商業ルールは変わりつつある。時流について行けないビジネスや古いやり方に固執するビジネスは、より先進的で、迅速で、より顧客中心の企業に追い抜かれていくだろう。

そうなればよいことだ。

Weibo, it seems, isn’t just an outlet for political frustrations that have nowhere else to go. It’s also increasingly an outlet for consumer frustrations, and one that companies ignore at their peril. If brands can be built on Weibo — and this is an idea many Chinese companies have embraced quite wholeheartedly — so too can they be destroyed. That doesn’t mean, of course, that your CEO has to be your new head of customer service. But if people are treating him that way — and Dangdang’s Li is far from the only CEO getting bombarded with complaints — that might be a good sign that your actual customer service team may need some adjustment.

Weiboはどこにも行き場のない政治的フラストレーションのはけ口だけではないようだ。増加しつつある消費者のフラストレーションのはけ口であり、企業があえて無視してきたフラストレーションのはけ口でもある。Weibo上でブランドを打ち立てることができれば、この考えはほかの中国企業が大事にしてきたことだが、そのブランドを台無しにすることもできる。このことはもちろん、自社のCEOがカスタマーサービスの責任者でなければならないことを意味しない。しかし、人が彼をそのように扱うなら、DangdangのLi氏は山のような苦情を受け取ったただ一人のCEOという訳ではなく、そういった苦情を受け取ったなら、カスタマーサービスのチームには調整が必要だということだ。

Another consumer wrote to Li:

"I bought some books on Dangdang and when they arrived one was missing. Customer service has just ignored me. With customer service like this, even if you can successfully IPO, what’s the point?"

Of course, being able to complain directly to the CEO of a company doesn’t make your complaint any more likely to be addressed. But since Weibo posts are never deleted and the whole thing is searchable, it does make your complaints a matter of public record. They’re searchable and visible to other potential customers.

他の消費者がLi氏にあてて書いた文章の一つは以下のようなものだ:

「Dangdangで本を何冊か買ったけど、一冊足りない状態で届いた。カスタマーサービスは取り合ってもくれなかった。こんなカスタマーサービスでは、株式新規公開で成功しても、いったい何の意味があるのでしょう？」

当然、CEOに直接苦情を言えるということはその苦情が処理されるということにはならない。Weiboの投稿は削除されることはなく、全ての投稿は検索可能で、その苦情を公開した記録に残すことができる。その苦情は将来の顧客たちも検索することができ、読むことができる。

That’s still true to an extent, but in the Weibo era, customers have a few more options. Today, for example, Shanghai Business carried a story about how CEOs on Weibo are being inundated with complaints. For example, the reporter found over 1000 recent complaints directed at Li Guoqing, CEO of Dangdang, a major e-commerce site. These weren’t complaints about the direction of the company, nor did they come from dissatisfied investors. One user wrote:

"I received broken audio visual products and when I complained Dangdang told me I would have to wait a month for a replacement! It’s truly more than I can bear."

それはある程度正しいが、Weibo全盛の時代では顧客にはいくつか他の選択肢もある。Shanghai Businessは今日の記事でCEOたちがWeibo上で苦情の氾濫に苦しむ様を伝えている。たとえば、記者が有名電子商取引サイトDangdangのCEOであるLi Guoqing氏にあてて書かれた1000以上の苦情を発見した。その苦情内容は会社の方針についてのものでもなく、不満を抱いている投資家たちからのものでもなく、ただ一人のユーザーからのものだった。

「壊れたAV製品を受け取ったが、Dangdangに苦情を言ったところ、交換に1ヶ月待たないといけないと言われた!本当に堪えられない。」

Besides tech, Yuki also noted that there are other simple but interesting money-making opportunities in the country. For example, he met a fellow Japanese who is selling second-hand factory-line machinery in Malaysia. Such used-and-abused machines are treated as junk in Japan, but Yuki found that they are worth a lot in Malaysia. “Besides the boom in tech start-ups, I see many opportunities in which entrepreneurs can make money in the region. Second hand machinery is one but I’m sure there are more of such opportunities,” he said.

A Peek Into DianDian’s New Office

We’ve reported on DianDian’s super fast speed. After only three months in the Innovation Works office, the light-blogging start-up based on the popular Western micro-blog, Tumblr.com, moved out into it’s own office. After raising an whopping US$10 million in funding from Sequoia Capital and Ceyuan Ventures, DianDian founder Jack Xu, wanted to aggressively expand his team and user base which now stands at over 3 million and aims to capture 10 million by year end.

Tumblr.comのようなブログサービスを展開するDianDianの速さについてはすでに伝えたとおりだが、Innovation Works officeへ移動してからわずか3ヶ月で、新オフィスへと移動した。DianDianの創立者であるJack Xu氏はSequoia CapitalとCeyuan Venturesから巨額の1000万ドルを調達したら、チーム人員とユーザー数を精力的に拡大し、現在300万人にとどまっているユーザー数を年末までに1000万人までに拡大するつもりだ。

Returns are hard to find in this climate, even at the highest levels. Many investors may reasonably choose to wait for the market to warm up before backing any startups, since they generally pose a pretty significant risk as compared with more conservative investments. But how many Chinese startups have the cash to be able to weather a long winter without additional investment? Not too many. Things could get grim:

OK, they’re probably not going to get that grim. But many Chinese startups were born during China’s big tech boom, and they’ve never dealt with an investment market like this before. Winter is indeed coming. But how long it will last is anyone’s guess.

この市場情勢ではたとえ一番高いところでも、見返りを得ることは難しい。多くの投資家は当然景気が良くなるまで、新規企業を支援するのは控えるだろう、従来の投資とは違い、新規企業支援には高いリスクが伴うからだ。しかしどれだけの中国の新規企業が追加投資を受けずに冬を越せるのだろうか?それほど多くはないだろう。景気は悪くなる可能性もある。

なるほど、景気はそれほど悪くならないかもしれないが、多くの中国の新規企業はハイテクブームの時に生まれたため、こういった投資市場の景気は経験したことがない。冬は来るだろうが、どのくらい続くのかは誰もわからない。

"When the market is hot, investors will think, even if I lose that ten million, I’ve got another fifty million coming in over here. When the markets are good, investors don’t worry about how much money there will be later. But when the markets cool, if an investor has lost ten million and doesn’t think there’s anything else coming back to him, he may not invest in anything else. Investors are very practical. If they can’t see a return, they’re going to be very cautious."

The real issue, of course, is investment. When the markets are good, investors aren’t as worried about their return, and they’re more likely to throw cash around — after all, everything is going up. But now, with the international markets in a state of rather extreme flux, some investors have less cash to play with, and many others are hesitant to take risks before things have evened out a bit. This isn’t a major concern for bigger tech companies, but investors willing to take big risks are the lifeblood of the startup community, and without them, many companies are facing a difficult future. As Chen Haozhi, CEO of a Chinese tech startup in the mobile touchscreen tech field, told Global Entrepreneur:

IPOs in 2010 and the first half of 2011 went well, by and large, and thus there were lots of people wanting to get in on the ground floor of the next big thing. But the environment for Chinese tech IPOs has soured, and mad expansion in some sectors — group buy websites, anyone? — has given way to highly competitive markets where a few top competitors eke out a meager existence and smaller sites starve and die out. Chinese tech stocks have nearly all dropped since May. Even Groupon, who first popularized the group buying concept and who had both money and a big time partner in Tecent for its joint venture, doesn’t seem to be able to hack it here.

For Chinese Net Startups, Winter is Coming

Perhaps Chinese internet companies could learn a thing or two from the Starks, the awesome but ill-fated northerners in George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire (now also a TV series called Game of Thrones on HBO). The family is known for its gruff, fatalistic motto — “Winter is Coming” — and Chinese internet startups would be wise to take heed.

Winter is coming to the Chinese tech startup scene, which has been enjoying a long summer thanks to increased investment because of the stunning success of larger Chinese tech companies.

中国のインターネット企業はスターク家から学ぶことができるかもしれない。スターク家とはジョージ・R・R・マーティンのファンタジー小説「氷と炎の歌」に登場する悲運の北方人である(HBOではGame of Thronesというシリーズも放送されている)。スターク家の荒々しく運命論的なモットーは「冬が来る」というもので、中国のインターネット新規企業が肝に銘じるべきものである。

Sogou Launched Image-based Search

Sogou, the search engine curated by Sohu.com, launched its image-based search solution lately by which users can search images based on the pictures they uploaded.


According to Ru Liyun, the General Manager of Search Business Division of Sogou, the company has spent half a year and hundreds of thousands USD on the feature.

Usually, we search for a picture by input text keywords into search bar, while on Sogou image-based search, we could upload a picture or input an online picture’s URL as a reference to land more similar pictures.

Baidu released similar image searching functions in the Jan of this year.

Sohu.comがサービスを行っている検索エンジンSogouはユーザーのアップロードした画像検索サービスを立ち上げた。
Sogouの検索ビジネス部門総括管理者であるRu Liyun氏によると、同社はその新機能開発に1年半と数十万ドルを投じたという。
通常の検索では検索ボックスに文字を入力し検索を行うが、Sogouの画像検索では写真をアップロードするか、写真のURLを入力し、類似した写真を検索することができる。
Baiduは今年1月にすでに同様のサービスを立ち上げている。

The difference between Sogou’s offering and Baidu’s, is that Sogou will use image recognition technology to analyze a picture’s topic to find more similar pictures that belong to the same topic.

But after my trial run, I thought there’re more to be expected from the fancy feature. Like, when I uploaded a picture of a cartoon character, I was expecting some other different pictures of it. However, what I got are just the same pictures with different sizes. As for Baidu, I tried in vain several times to upload a picture but only to find an error notice saying ”Sorry, failed in uploading picture. Please try again” before I decided to pull it out. It seems Baidu has discontinued the service.

しかし、私が試しに使ってみたところ、まだまだこの機能には改善の余地があると思われた。というのは、私は一枚の漫画のキャラクターの画像をアップロードし、そのキャラクターの他の画像が検索結果に出てくるのを期待していたが、出てきたのはサイズの異なる同じ画像だった。Baiduの画像検索では画像をアップロードしてみたが、「画像のアップロードに失敗しました。再試行してください。」という警告が表示されるだけで最後にはあきらめた。どうやらBaiduは同サービスの提供を停止したようだ。

"Groupon’s approach to international expansion is to aggressively create a large presence upfront and refine our strategy as we gain deeper insight into the local market. Interestingly, this came just as we learned about a leaked internal communique from Groupon’s CEO that addresses, among many other things, concerns about the Gaopeng.com. Here’s what Mr. Mason had to say:
