Jiepang Teams Up With NOKIA To Offer NFC Check-in

NFC (Near Field Communication) has been on hype for a while for its convenience and simplification in use. However, it seems the highly praised technology is too advanced to being adopted for everyday use for the time being. Partly for the inadequacy in smartphones that support NFC and partly because of few mobile-based services are ready for that.

The awkwardness is on track to be removed with the influx of more and more NFC-ready mobile and service. NOKIA and LBS service Jiepang are leading the trend in a recent joint-force.

NFC(近距離無線通信)は便利で簡単な技術として話題になってしばらくたつが、現状では普段の生活に採用するにはまだ少し先進的すぎる技術のようだ。その理由は対応するスマートフォンが少ないことや、対応する無線サービスがほとんどないことだ。

しかし、NFC対応の携帯やサービスが増えるにつれてその点についての不安は取り除かれつつある。NOKIAとLBSのサービスであるJiepangは連携によって、NFC普及に弾みをつけるつもりだ。

In just two years time, Tokopedia has made some significant changes in Indonesia’s e-commerce scene. Its online marketplace concept was then followed by some similar companies like Plasa, Rakuten (the ecommerce service from Japan), and Blibli. But the company still has a long way to go to become a giant in the industry.

We’ll have to wait and see what kind of solutions William and his team have to solve the issues they have encountered. But for now, if you’d like to read more on William and Tokopedia, check out our previous interview with him earlier this year.

In other words, the total value of transactions for its second year is about Rp30 billion (US$3.5 million) – that’s an increase of six-fold compared to the first year.


According to William, Tokopedia’s success cannot be separated from the loyalty of its users. Even though the userbase is still small, they keep coming back to shop in its online marketplace. As of August 17th, there are 100,857 active users and 11,426 active sellers on Tokopedia. Both figures more than doubled compared to last year.

William also found some interesting problems unique to e-commerce in Indonesia, but he couldn’t elaborate since the company is currently working on new features to address them.

William氏はインドネシアの電子商取引特有の問題も発見したが、会社がその問題に対応するTokopediaの新機能を実装中であるため、発言できないという。

By focusing efforts on future technologies, subscribers stand to benefit in the long term. However, in the near future this speed capping solution is just a band-aid on an ever-worsening wound. Whether the carriers can keep the networks up to speed long enough for their efforts to pay off is yet to be seen. Either way the balancing may act as a helpful experiment for nations facing this problem in the future.

最新技術に注力することは、長い目で見るとユーザーの恩恵は大きいが、速度制限を設ける解決策は結局、焼け石に水でしかないだろう。キャリア各社が投資に見合った期間、ネットワークを高速に保てるかどうか判断するにはまだ時間がかかるだろう。どちらにせよ、妥協点を探る試みは、日本が将来直面することになるネットワーク問題の重要な試練になるかもしれない。

2 Years Old, 200 Millions Users, and Sina Weibo Is On NASDAQ

It took Twitter 5 years to reach 200 millions, but for its counterpart in China, Sina Weibo has claimed that it reached 200 millions users at its 2-years old birthday.

To celebrate this impressive performance, Sina even managed to get its Weibo on NASDAQ, with the greeting Share happiness with 200 million people here!.

We have spent lots of words talking about Weibo these days, so better keep this post short. Not sure if it will be actually Listed on NASDAQ and when, and it has not really solved the monetization question yet, but you have to agree, Weibo is changing Chinese daily life.

Mecox Lane Stock Price Has Dropped 90% Within A Year

Due to the stock market wobbles in the past few weeks, not only the market lost ground, but also brought disaster to some US- listed Chinese companies. Mecox Lane Limited, China’s leading online retailer of apparel and accessories(M18.com), who got listed on NASDAQ for less than a year, has dropped from $17.26 to less than $ 2 now, resulting in Mecox Lane investeors Sina and China Dongxiang Group loss more than 69 million US dollars.

Mecox Lane (NASDAQ:MCOX) went public in the US last November as China’s first B2C stock. At its debut Mecox Lane is trading at $17.50, $6.5 higher than the IPO price.

Mecox Lane(NASDAQ:MCOX)は去年11月に中国初の一般消費者向けの電子商取引を行う企業として上場し、当初の株価は17.50ドルで、新規株式公募価格の6.5ドルよりも高額で取引されていた。

The closing price of Mecox Laneday is up to $17.26, raised 56.91%. Unfortunately, it actually became Mecox Lane’s highest price on NASDAQ–since then, the stock has dropped significantly.



On November 29, 2010, nearly one month after the IPO, Mecox Lane announced its third quarter financial results, which showed the company had a weaker-than-expected gross profit margin of 39.7 percent. Mecox Lane encountered several lawsuits by its U.S. investors for inaccuracies and misleading information in its IPO prospectus.



Also, its market value shrink from US$ 627 billion to US$ 11 million, which means in less than 10 months, the market value of MCOX has evaporated 0.517 billion US dollars.

Are there any competitors for Lindoc?

"In the US, there’s a similar start-up called Inkling which has backing from Sequoia Capital. But it use the E-Pub their original publishing format, which means a low variety of available content despite the fact that it’s been running for two years. We chose PDF as our standard format. It’s handled on the backend, content can been seen on the service’s browser app and users do have not access to the original file. It allows completely free drawing on a e-book content, and I believe this may help us get a wide variety of e-book content on our showcase quicker."

Lindocにライバルは存在するのだろうか?

「アメリカにはSequoia Capitalの支援を受けるInkling社という同様の新興企業がある。しかしInkling社はEPUBを出版フォーマットに採用したため、創業から2年たったにも関わらず、利用できるコンテンツの幅が狭いということになった。我々はPDFを採用した。PDFはバックエンドで処理されるため、ユーザーはブラウザ上のアプリではPDFを閲覧できるが、オリジナルのPDFファイルにはアクセスすることができない。ブラウザアプリでは電子書籍に自由に書き込みできる、このことは我々が多様な電子書籍コンテンツを素早く供給できるようになることにつながると信じている。」

When does the service goes public? Are you planning to make it available worldwide?

"We’re currently working very hard on it, and it’s now mostly in the final phase. I think we can release it in September or October. The fundamental technology and interface used for the service has no language barrier, we just would like to make it available worldwide and set up an e-textbook store distribution platform on a multilingual basis."

What made you start developing Lindoc?

"I’m majoring in physics and I had been thinking that it’s hard to note a formula using mathematical symbols (like integrals, for example). When I was at university, I developed an app that allows you to note mathematical symbols on a web browser. This won the grand prix at a business contest held by the university’s VC arm. We were also chosen as a nominee for the Japanese goverment’s tech and science incubation/mentoring program in 2009. I then decided to quit graduate school, found a company using the prize money from the program, and be committed to developing more practical apps and services."

Lindoc開発のきっかけは?

「私は大学で物理を専攻していて、数学の記号を使って数式を書くことが難しいと感じていた(たとえば積分など)。大学在学中、ウェブブラウザ上で数学の記号を書くことのできるアプリケーションを開発した。このアプリケーションは大学のベンチャーキャピタル部門で開催されたビジネスコンテストで大賞を獲得した。我々は2009年の日本政府主催の科学技術の起業家支援プログラム候補にも選ばれた。私はその後、大学をやめ、そのプログラムの賞金を使って起業し、役に立つアプリケーションやサービスの開発に取り組んでいる。」

Lindoc was founded last September, and teamed up Mr. Machino with two programmers and a designer. Mr. Machino also has a technical background but works as a key player for their business development stuffs right now. The most remarkable thing is they’ve given up E-pub, often called the world’s e-publication standard, and have chosen PDF as their key format for storing content.

I’ll be keeping my eye on their development and looking forward to a day when their solutions might change the Japanese education system from a conservative system to something more social, interactive and progressive.

Lindocは昨年9月に設立され、町野氏とプログラマー二人と一人のデザイナーでチームが結成された。町野氏は技術畑出身だが、Lindocのビジネス開発スタッフとして重要な人物でもある。Lindocの特筆すべき点は、コンテンツ保存に電子出版の標準と目されるEPUBフォーマットではなく、PDFフォーマットを採用した点にある。

Measures just under 25" tall, being a porcelain bisque socket head on composition type Seeley jointed body. Excellent condition the back of the head is marked 1987 SC5 5-78. Body has the Real Seeley body label. Lovely face with blue grey open glass eyes, painted lashes around the eyes, brown feathered brows and closed molded mouth. There is a space between her lips. A faint little dimple in her chin. Long auburn wig with locks of curls slips over the pate. The artistry on this doll is so lovely.

When to Sunset and When to Stay With Social Games on Facebook

This was the case for several games developed by ZipZapPlay prior to its PopCap acquisition. Curt Bererton, former CEO of ZipZapPlay and now General Manager under PopCap, walked an audience through the equation during a session at Casual Connect in Seattle last month. In his talk, titled “Finding the Minimum Viable Game and When to Kill Your Baby,” he explained how the developer checked the LTV > CPI equation on the first day of launch, the seventh day post-launch, and then a final time a month after the game’s launch. In general, he says, if LTV > CPI after 30 days, you’re doing it right.

The point at which the equation seems to change dramatically for most developers is after the three- and four-month mark, where we see social games lose a lot of their early traffic. At this point, says Ryan, the game’s LTV is usually very high because only the dedicated paying users remain in the game while non-paying users have left. Depending on how a developer manages the CPI, the game will either thrive on its loyal users, or gradually decline over a period that ranges from six months to a year.
