To be a truly great leader, you need first to understand what leading involves.
To lead means "to show the way for or to set the course for employees by going before or along with them." You are guided by your principles. They chart the course of your life. As a leader, you are to take your employees in a specific direction. The things that you live out are the very things that those who follow you will begin to exhibit in their lives. If you are ruthless, you will begin to see ruthless behavior in employees. If you are fair, you will begin to see similar behavior in employees.

If I Die: Facebook App Lets You Leave Sweet Last Words

Facebook profiles don’t die the same way people do. If I Die is a Facebook app that makes sure, even if you die, your social self can still send out your last wishes and post messages to your friends years after you’re gone

If I Die lets “you” post a final message to your wall and loved one when you’re dead. After installing the app, you choose three “trustees” (Facebook friends) who are charged with verifying your death. Users can then record videos or craft any number of Facebook posts to be published posthumously. When your trustees confirm your death, your messages can be published all at once to your Facebook wall or released on a designated schedule

It might be a little morbid to start recording farewell messages, but Wilook, the Israel-based company behind the app, built the app because nobody really knows when death will come: “We all have things to say and don’t necessarily have the audience with the patience to hear us,” says Eran Alfonta, the app’s co-founder and CEO. “Actually we all want to leave something behind, we all want to leave a stamp behind us.”

Alfonta got the idea when two of his married friends traveled to Italy without their children and narrowly escaped a fatal car crash with a truck. “They stopped aside and drank water and relaxed and started speaking between themselves: ‘Oh my god, what would happen to the kids if something happened to me?’” They asked Alfonta to create a website where they could record something secret to their kids that would only be sent if they died.

People have been leaving posthumous messages for a long time. Why should a Facebook app replace pen and paper or a recorded video? Facebook provided a way to verify your death with “trustees” but it also guaranteed a delivery mechanism. Too many times a letter can sit unread in a desk, but If I Die ensures a message reaches its destination.

It also allows messages to come out on a schedule. For example, when one user was diagnosed with cancer, she started recording videos for her daughter to be posted on her birthday every year until she was 18.

In a way, If I Die gives its users a measure of social media immortality. Even when they die, their profiles can live on, posting comments and sending personal messages for as long as they have messages to send.

If I Die currently only publishes to a user’s public profile, but the team is working on features to allow for discrete messages and even messages that can be sent to people not on Facebook. The public postings will be free to use, though the discrete messages will work on an annual subscription model, Alfonta says.

While the team is tight-lipped on how many users it has, Alfonta said they expected to hit 100,000 users within a couple of months. Death is clearly on our social minds and Alfonta is no exception. “Oh my god, yes,” he says, when asked if he’s used If I Die to record his own parting messages. “I have four kids and a lovely wife and I left each one of them a message. I hope to live long and prosper but if something happens to me then I think there will be some excellent surprises for my kids, some touching messages.”

Most of Gates time, however, will be devoted to his new challenge and longstanding passion, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation which dates back to 1994. Gates is following in the philanthropic footsteps of American tycoons such as Henry Ford, John D. Rockefeller, and Andrew Carnegie, who all devoted large sums of money to charitable foundations in their later years.

The Foundation employs nearly 800 people, has an endowment of $34.17 billion, and has committed total grants of $21.08 billion in the US and across the world. Buffett has also pledged to donate a significant proportion of his wealth, in effect doubling the Foundation's resources.

Then there are the investments. Gates is best known for co-founding Microsoft, but he also founded Corbis, a very successful digital art and photography archive. He has money invested in a project being organized by former Microsoft Chief Technology Officer Nathan Myhrvold, working on a new type of nuclear reactor. And there are other investments too. Plus there will be continued involvement in the occasional project at Microsoft where Gates remains chairman for the foreseeable future and plans to spend one day a week.

And there are the hobbies. Gates, along with Buffett, is a keen bridge player. The pair even offered $1 million to encourage high schools to promote bridge to school children.

It is not a good idea to step down from a full time job without knowing what you are going to do next. Gates had a pretty good idea of what lay ahead when he finished full-time at Microsoft.

To start with there was a holiday: 'I've never taken more than a two-week vacation, and this time it will actually be about seven weeks, so that is very long.' Although in true Gates fashion it wasn't all holiday. It also included some Microsoft work.

WorldCosplay: A Multi-lingual Cosplay Community for the World from Japan

Popular animation and vocaloid characters are a part of Japanese culture, and even outside of Japan cosplay is wildly popular. And a new website called WorldCosplay aims to capitalize on that popularity. It’s a multi-lingual cosplay community that allows users to submit their own cosplay pictures. The site is provided in 12 different languages including English, Spanish, French, Italian, Korean and more.

It was pre-launched [1] in late December, and since then it has attracted 8,500 registered users and there have been over 60,000 cosplay pictures submitted.

人気アニメやボーカロイドキャラクターは日本文化の１つであり、日本国外でもコスプレは人気を博している。更にその人気に乗じて「WorldCosplay」という新たなサイトが登場した。ユーザーは、このコスプレミュニティで自分のコスプレ写真を投稿できる。サイトは多言語で、使用言語は英語、スペイン語、フランス語、イタリア語、韓国語等の12言語。

Currently in a beta phase, WorldCosplay is a sister site to Japan’s most popular cosplay community “Cure,” which has been active since 2001. As cosplay became a phenomenon not just amongst Japanese but all around the world, Cure opened an English website back in 2008. The number of English-speaking registered users has exceeded 20,000, leading to the release of WorldCosplay.

現在ベータ版のWorldCosplayは、2001年運営開始の日本で最も人気のあるコスプレコミュニティ「Cure」の姉妹サイトとなっている。コスプレが日本人だけのものでなく世界中で見られるようになり、Cureは2008年に英語サイトを開設した。英語話者の登録が2万を超え、WorldCosplayのサイトオープンへと繋がった。

User can create a WorldCosplay account using their Facebook or Twitter credentials. A user’s ranking is generated by the evaluation of submitted photos, motivating cosplayers to submit high quality photos. There are several ranking criteria such as User Ranking, Character Ranking, Title Ranking, and Tag Ranking. Not surprisingly, the most popular character on WorldCosplay is “Hatsune Miku” (featured in the most recent Google Chrome TV commercial in Japan).

'Looking in the rear-view mirror is '" a waste of time, basically', Gates said. Yet he was well aware of his historical context.

•Create the future. Gates generated a certain amount of awe among those who regarded him as the predictor and architect of the digital age. History may judge him more kindly than his many detractors and rivals who argued that he was simply exploiting his monopoly position.

Gates was at the top of his profession for more than three decades. In that time he became the richest man in the world. Yet despite his enormous wealth and achievements, Gates showed no signs of slowing down. If you want to do business at the speed of Gates:

•Don't try to explain. Gates has felt the need to share his vision with the rest of us. After The Road Ahead, for example, which set out his view of the technological future, some wondered whether Gates' vanity was starting to get the better of him.

•Don't look back. Fundamental to Microsoft's success was Gates' willingness to keep his eyes firmly on the road ahead.

And it's very typical that because I've been very successful at that, people come in and expect that I have wisdom about topics that I don't.

'I do think there are some ways that we've run the company - the way we've hired people, and created an environment and used stock options - that would be good lessons for other businesses as well. But I always want to be careful not to suggest that we've found the solutions to all problems.'

Unlike his hero, however, Gates is rooted in the here and now, whether solving Microsoft software problems, or tackling global hunger. One of his greatest attributes is his ability to combine technological innovation with a hard-nosed pragmatism. He also recognizes his own limitations - an unusual trait in such an accomplished individual.

'You have to be careful, if you're good at something, to make sure you don't think you're good at other things that you aren't necessarily so good at', he has noted. 'I come in every day and work with a great team of people who are trying to figure out how to make great software, listening to the feedback and doing the research.

THE QUICK AND THE DEAD
Whatever the limitations of his vision, Gates has been the closest thing the computer industry has to Leonardo Da Vinci, the famous Renaissance futurist whose drawings of fantastical machines became a reality centuries later.

Apart from his collection of sports cars and a multimillion dollar mansion on the outskirts of Seattle, Gates is surprisingly restrained in his spending. But there is of course that glorious exception, his purchase of the Leicester Codex by Leonardo Da Vinci for $30.8 million. There are those that have suggested Gates sees himself as a latter-day Da Vinci - someone whose visions of the future are proved accurate in following centuries.

But there came a point when we realized it was happening faster and was a much deeper phenomenon than had been recognized in our strategy. So as an act of leadership I had to create a sense of crisis, and we spent a couple of months throwing ideas and email around, and we went on some retreats. Eventually a new strategy coalesced, and we said, "Okay, here's what we're going to do; here's how we're going to measure ourselves internally; and here's what the world should think about what we're going to do."

'That kind of crisis is going to come up every three or four years. You have to listen carefully to all the smart people in the company.
