Investors matter too. In 2013, The Wall Street Journal cited Hanoi-based startup incubator Topica that said “only Singapore has a better record [than Vietnam] of tech entrepreneurs starting companies and then successfully selling stakes to outside investors”. It was also a boost that the population of ultra-high net worth individuals in Vietnam increased by 14.7 per cent in the same year.

2. Greater ease of doing business: The Vietnamese government has sought to streamline administrative processes and reduce taxation rates so as to make it easier for small businesses to thrive. On World Bank’s ‘Doing Business Index’, which determines if a regulatory environment is conducive to the starting and operation of a local firm, the country rose from 99th in 2013 to 72nd in 2014 (out of 189 economies).

Wider Internet and mobile connectivity: With a population of 92 million, there are 42 million Internet users (penetration rate of 45.6 per cent), 25 million active Facebook users (27.2 per cent), and 134 million active mobile subscribers (145.7 per cent) in Vietnam. These oft-cited statistics point to the proliferation of mobile users and networked communication, and are consequently favourable for startups plugged into the Internet of Things. With the simultaneous growth in the number of smartphone users, as well as data subscription plans, companies have also rushed into the mobile game and app markets.

4. A robust community of startups: Beyond the promise for e-commerce, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have become more ubiquitous. These enterprises – including startups – account for over 90 per cent of the Vietnamese economy. When the government launched a fund in 2013 to assist with the development of SMEs, it was projected that the number of new companies would reach 350,000 by the end of this year. These trends point not only to greater institutional support, but a more diverse landscape for startups to expand their operations, as well as network.

China’s ecommerce market was worth $2 trillion in 2014

According to a new report from China’s Ministry of Commerce, the Middle Kingdom’s ecommerce markets racked up RMB 13 trillion (US$2 trillion) in transactions over the course of 2014. That’s growth of 25 percent compared to 2013. Those numbers include online B2B transactions and sales from online retailers as well as the sales on ecommerce platforms like JD and Tmall.

It’s a massive number to be sure, but statistics indicate that China’s ecommerce market still has the potential to grow far bigger. A recent report from We Are Social, for example, revealed that well under half of the country is frequently researching or buying products online:

WeChat Reaches 1.1B Registered Accounts, with 440M Regular Users

The number of registered WeChat accounts has reached 1.12 billion, with 440 million monthly active users, the company disclosed yesterday. About half of the users are aged 20 to 29. The 30-39 age group is the second largest.

WeChat has more than 20 language versions, covering users in more than 200 countries and regions. It claims to be the #1 social app in more than 70 countries and regions.

Public Accounts, used by businesses, organizations or individuals to interact and engage with their WeChat subscribers, now number 8.5 million, with 25,000 being added daily.

WeChat also unveiled yesterday an advertising system for Moments, the content sharing platform within it.

An average day sees more than 3 billion webpages shared on Moments. Some 76.4% users check Moments regularly to share or consume content shared by their contacts. Interestingly, this is higher than the percentage of users (67%) who use WeChat for messaging.

4. Touchten

Touchten Games is one of Indonesia’s most successful mobile game developers to date. Founded by Anton Soeharyo, Touchten helped pioneer the gaming culture in Indonesia, starting back in August 2011 when it closed a series A round of funding with local VC firm Ideosource, headed by Andi Boediman.

It became clear that Touchten was growing after it broke into the top five in the US App Store in February 2013 with its hit title Train Legend. Touchten’s other games Infinite Sky and Sushi Chain also made the list.

5. CekAja

CekAja is a Jakarta-based fintech startup that lets Indonesians compare a wide variety of financial products including personal loans, credit cards, deposits, and syariah (deposit that follows Islamic principles). Founder John Patrick Ellis has been able to grab funding at various stages along the way from local VC firm Mountain SEA Ventures and Compare88, a financial comparison company that serves all of Southeast Asia.

6. Tokopedia

No list about Indonesian funding would be complete without mentioning Tokopedia, one of the archipelago’s most popular consumer-to-consumer marketplaces, and the company that set the record for the largest funding round in Indonesian tech startup history.

It’s been a long journey for Tokopedia, though. After starting the company in 2007, founder William Tanuwijaya bootstrapped the venture for two years before raising seed funding from PT Indonusa Dwitama in 2009. In March of 2010, Tokopedia grabbed a series A round from East Ventures, followed by a US$700,000 series B investment from CyberAgent Ventures in April 2011 for 10 percent equity. This brought the company’s valuation to US$7 million.

One year later, Tokopedia grabbed fresh funding from Netprice (which later changed its name to Beenos) after facilitating 13.4 million sales based on revenue that flowed through its escrow service in a 12-month period. In June 2013, the marketplace attracted another investment, this time led by Softbank Ventures Korea, and again followed by CyberAgent Ventures and East Ventures.

MalesBanget is one of Indonesia’s popular viral humor sites featuring articles and videos that are hyperlocalized for an Indonesian audience. Currently, MalesBanget operates under MBDC Media, and the site’s origin story – which involves Indonesian celebrity and site co-founder Christian Sugiono – dates back to 2001.

After a decade of existence and only causal maintenance, the company decided to get serious and grabbed its first round of funding from Nusantara Capital Incubator in 2011. More recently, MBDC Media received a series A investment from Rebright Partners and 500 Startups. The site is well on its way to a million visitors per month, as SimilarWeb estimates MalesBanget saw 710,000 visitors last month, up from 530,000 just the month before.

Twitter just acquired India’s most fascinating startup

Twitter confirmed this morning that it has acquired Zipdial, an Indian startup that has made a business off of something really unusual – missed calls. Both Twitter and Zipdial wrote blog posts (see here and here) about the buy-up, but neither revealed how much the deal is worth. This is Twitter’s first India acquisition.

In India, where people are very frugal with their rather pricey mobile call and data plans, missed calls have become a useful signal between friends and family members. Two school friends might agree that sending a missed call at around 8am is a sign that one person has arrived at the usual meeting spot to walk to school together, thereby saving them the expense of a call or SMS.
