Why VCs don’t invest in ‘good’ companies

Every VC says they are looking for great founders that are solving real problems in big markets. So why is it that so many “good” companies that seemingly meet these requirements still fail to raise money from VCs?

Venture capital is a hits driven business, with ~4.5 percent of dollars invested generating ~60 percent of total returns. This is why the VC model is built on the expectation that most returns will come from companies that pay 10X+ on investment, and on the expectation that many investments will lose money.

Most founders already know this. But what is less obvious to many is that companies that achieve moderate success are not much better from the VC point of view than those that go bankrupt.

This is why any signals that your startup has limits to its upside potential is a reason to say no to investing in you. With that in mind, here are the top reasons why VCs don’t want to invest in your “good“ startup.

Top 6 reasons to say no

1. Weak barriers to entry

The first mover in many industries often ends up with an arrow in their back. In cases where you are unable to build a combination of network effects, brand, proprietary technology, or economies of scale, fast followers and incumbents may be better positioned to take the market than you.

You may rationalize that this means they’ll likely buy you to get to market faster. While this sometimes is true, VCs are usually not interested in these relatively modest M&A scenarios, or in the founders who aspire to them.

2. Lack of meaningful differentiation

Crowded markets and low margins don’t usually result in outsized exits. The new modus operandi for VCs is that competition is for losers, and they look for businesses that can do something that others fundamentally can’t.

3. Unsustainable unit economics

Challenges such as identifying the right traction channels and finding product/market fit are common to all startups in their early days. But fundamental issues with price/product complexity fit may leave you in the startup graveyard as you try to scale, so get used to being asked early on what your CAC/LTV ratio is and how it can be improved over time.

適切な販路の確保や製品にマッチしたマーケッテキング方法を探し出すことは、スタートアップの初期には共通に見れる大きな課題だろう。しかし製品特性と販売価格の一致は、企業の規模を拡大する上においても、スタートアップを墓場行きに出来る程基本的な課題だ。そのためCAC/LTV値は今どうなっているか、それを今後改善していくにはどうすれば良いか、会社設立初期の段階で質問される場合への準備が必要だ。

Sure, it’s not exactly the Jaws 19 shark. But it’s an impressive proof of concept. And given that there’s already a ton of research happening in gesture-based input, at least in theory it shouldn’t be too hard to turn that rotating Theia logo into something decidedly more interactive.

Inspiration from a toy

Kos Lin says that his team had the idea for Theia after coming across this novelty product that creates a 3D image of an object using mirrors. The image is “real” in the sense that it isn’t an illusion – it shows up in photographs and videos – and it appears above the container. All of that makes it good for advertising in theory.

It doesn't look awful. I just was of the impression these were one off items not newly minted items. I am appreciative of the price as another is listed at a much higher price. I wondered about the rust effect as it is much more uniform than on genuinely old pieces.
I also ask about that piece you sent back...the one I really liked with the pine accents and rim. Two have now appeared but again by the company that sets prices much higher than I can contemplate. Are you able to get another of those and sell at the same price as my items?

If the numbers all add up — and it certainly appears that they do based on reports to date (this deal/story has been an ongoing development for some time now) — it would leave Alibaba and Ant Financial each with about a 20 percent stake in Paytm, meaning China’s largest ecommerce and mobile payments player now essentially owns 40 percent of India’s largest ecommerce and mobile payments player. That’s some serious firepower on the global stage, with India and China being the two hottest markets for growth for the foreseeable future.

India’s largest smartphone maker, Micromax, reportedly mulling U.S. entry in 2016

Tech news out of India is coming hot and fast today — we’re now hearing that the country’s largest homegrown smartphone maker, Micromax, could be eyeing a U.S. market entry next year. Micromax overtook Samsung to become the top player in India’s mobile space sometime around January, and with India due to become the world’s second-largest smartphone market by 2017, that makes it one of the big players to watch out for globally.

That said, being the established leader in a huge market like India or China hasn’t historically guaranteed any amount of success with U.S. smartphone consumers — one just needs to look at case studies from the likes of Huawei, ZTE, Lenovo, or Xiaomi (which still hasn’t entered the U.S. phone market for fear of being sued up the river) to see the struggle. I don’t expect Micromax will fare any differently, if it decides to try entering the U.S. As far as most consumers in the States are concerned, Micromax is still a foreign brand that they have never heard of. Why buy it over Samsung or Apple, even at a reduced price point?

Those numbers are impressive — we just learned that Panasonic, which is also heavily focused on India, hopes to pull in $2 billion by 2018 from its phone business as part of its planned return to the global smartphone race. Micromax, meanwhile, expects to hit $2.25 billion for the fiscal year ending March 2016. Earlier this month, it said it plans to put out up to 48 new smartphones per year priced up to $150. It’s certainly making an aggressive play and doesn’t look like it will back down any time soon. I’d expect to hear more from this one soon.

He said it is a mechanical failure in the tape drive which prevented it from spinning correctly. The repairs totaled $191.00. Upon bringing the unit home and powering it up, I discovered that that tape inside the unit had been recycled from an old reel to reel piano recording (you can still faintly hear the original piano recording which doesn't quite fully erase as they pass over the erase heads.) I'm told that putting the wrong tape in the unit can cause unusual wear and tear. The unit worked for about an hour and then the tape stopped spinning.
