高さは６３４メートル。
タワーとしては世界一の高さを誇ります。

展望台は二つ。

絶滅危惧種ヤクタネゴヨウの自生地としても最大の地域で、標高300メートルより上には多くのゴヨウマツが見られます。

西武林道でのお楽しみは野生のヤクザルやヤクシカとの出会い。
野生ですので、決してエサは与えないで下さいね。

ヤクザルはニホンザルの亜種でその生息数は数千頭前後と推測されています。
ニホンザルと比べて小柄で、体毛の手足が長く粗いといった特徴があります。

ヤクザルがいるとこに良く見られるのがヤクシカ。
猿が木の上で食べる木の実のおこぼれを頂いているんだとか。

The region is the largest area of natural habitat of Pinus amamiana, the endangered species. On the place higher than 300 meters above the sea level, we can see a lot of amamiana pines.
In the West woodland path, you will be happy to encounter wild Yakuzaru monkeys and Yakushika deer. Since they are wildlife, be sure not to give food to them.
Yakuzaru is the family of Japan Monkey and the number is estimated as around several thousands.
They are smaller than Japan Monkeys and the body hair on their limbs is long and rough.
Yakushika is often seen where there is Yakuzaru. They tend to get the leftover of tree nuts that the monkeys eat.

滝の南側の高台が展望台になっているので、車で訪れてその雄大な景色を簡単に楽しむことが出来ます。

展望所は標高270メートル。
滝の反対側には原集落と太平洋が一望できます。

世界遺産の西部林道を歩く
西部林道は屋久島で唯一、海岸線から世界自然遺産に指定されている地域です。

屋久島の深部は樹齢千年を超えるとされる屋久杉の宝庫。
こちらは翁杉。
上の方はすでに枯れていて、着生樹が多く見られる。
古い巨木を苗床に新しい木が育つ様子は屋久杉の特徴をよく表しています。
屋久杉の古木らしい風格にはまさに翁の名がふさわしいですね。

In the depths of Yakushima, there are a bountiful Yakusigi cedars aged more than 100 years old.
This is an old cedar.
The upper part has been already withered and many trees grows at the part.
The situation that the old huge trees become a seed bed to grow new trees is well reflected the feature of Yakusugi.
The noble presence of Yakusugi suitable for an old cedar is eligible for the name of Okina.
The biggest sized stump in Yakushima!

緑深い境内の石段をゆっくり上り、御仏の待つ金堂を目指します。
石段の両脇に茂るのはシャクナゲ。
開花時期はもちろん、花が咲いてない時期でも画になります。

この石段、武者の鎧の胴当てに似ていることから「よろい坂」と呼ばれているんだとか。

金堂の御仏たち
「よろい坂」を上りきったところに見えるのが金堂。国宝です。

金堂には仏像がずらり。
奥に５体。手前に十二神将。
お寺と言うより仏教美術館さながらの雰囲気です。

中央にいらっしゃるのが釈迦如来さま。

Rhododendron flowers are growing the each side of the stairs.
Not only in the time of their blossoms, but also when they have no flowers, they decorate the place beautifully.
The stone stairs look like a slip-guard of the armor of samurai warrior, so it is called “armor hill”.
The Buddha statues in the golden hall
When you have climbed up the “armor hill”, you can see the golden hall. It is the National Treasure.
There are full of the Buddha statues in the golden hall.
5 statues are in the back and 12 divine generals are in the front.
The atmosphere is rather like a Buddha statue museum than the temple.

The center statue is the Shaka Nyorai.
