I asked driver Kan Yanagishita who cherishes and conveys the four seasons that has closely involved Japanese culture closely for his episodes with the foreign visitors.
● Please tell me the event and location in Kyoto that entertained foreign visitors the most.
The sounds of falling rain heard in Shisendo Temple. At the moment of the start of the rainfall, from the treetops, the blades of the grass, alleys and the sandy areas, and also from the eaves or the scarecrows, variety of natural sound are designed to be heard there.
We asked Mr. Yagishita, who values the four seasons as a treasured aspect of Japanese culture and faithfully conveys these feelings to his foreign visitors, about some of his encounters on the job.
・Many foreign tourists are very excited about visiting Kyoto. Can you tell us about what your guests are most pleased by when visiting the city?
The sound of the rain at Shisendo. The moment it falls, when it hits the treetops, the leaves on the plants, the earth and sand, the eaves of the temple, the bamboo water fountain and so on. These noises make you feel like you've heard the sound of nature.
Feeling that most Japanese recognize taking four seasons in the culture is a common thing.
Is there anything that foreigners wish to have actually?
I think they would like to find common things than different ones and respect each other's different culture.
What is the most thoughtful thing when you escort foreigners?
I'm very thoughtful of safety drive and a sense of security. I try to interact with them like my distant relatives.
They're surprised to learn that we have in common the feeling of valuing the four seasons despite the fact that we come from different cultures.
・"So this is how foreigners think!" Do you ever come across this feeling?
I think that we tend to look for points of similarity over points of difference in our cultures and personalities, because we hope to respect each other's differences.
・Do you have a motto when escorting foreign tourists?
I aim to drive safely and give my customers a sense of security, as if I were driving around members of my distant family.
They feel that Japanese are same with them in the point to take the four seasons into their culture.
●Is there anything that the foreign customers actually feel like this?
They hope to respect each culture which is different with each other, finding the common points more than the different points.
●What is the point that you pay attention when you escort the foreign customers?
It is the safety drive and the relaxation. I serve them as if I am a distant relative for them.

How do you spend your days off?
I've been doing Japanese archery on and off since I was a student, going on 30 years now.
I think the idea the "everyone has something they can teach you" is really important.
・Any last messages to customers?
This summer, on the Kyoto-Jukan expressway will open in its entirety on July 18, so it will become much easier to access the costal parts of Kyoto such as Amanohashidate in Miyazu, which is one of Japan's three most famous scenic views, along with Itsukushima in Hiroshima Prefecture and Matsushima in Miyagi Prefecture. It's possible to go to Amanohashidate as a day trip, but I would recommend staying overnight and taking your time to absorb the view.

◆How do you spend your weekends?
I've been practicing archery since school, so about 30 years by now (counting all the breaks).
Feeling that "everyone around me is a teacher" is important.
◆Leave a message to our customers.
This summer, on July 18th, the straight road through Kyoto will be fully open. Miyazu, Amanohashidate and Kyoto seaside will be closer than ever before. Why don't go for at least a day trip or even spend a night watching the sea and feeling the time flow by?
