Announcing Startup Asia Jakarta!

We wrapped up Startup Asia Singapore just over a month ago. The response has been great, and it motivates us to keep moving and building. At the end of Startup Asia Singapore, I said that we would be announcing our next city very soon. And here it is.

That city is Jakarta, Indonesia. Startup Asia Jakarta will be held on June 7 and 8.

我々はちょうど1ヶ月前にスタートアップアジアシンガポールを終えたところだ。反応は上々だったし、そのおかげでさらなる前進とより多くを構築し続けていくように我々自身を奮い立たせてくれている。スタートアップアジアシンガポールの終了時に我々は次の開催都市の発表をすぐにでも行うと伝えたのだが、それがここだ。

その都市とはインドネシアのジャカルタである。スタートアップアジアジャカルタは6月7日と8日に開催予定だ。

In fact, some local friends tell me that Startup Asia Jakarta is the first international startup conference ever held in Indonesia. I’m not sure if that’s true or not, but we’re delighted to go there in any case. Our team has also been learning a lot from our Indonesian friends. It has been a humbling experience. The people in Jakarta are amazingly friendly and of course Indonesia is oozing with tech potential. And the world is watching.

Over the last four weeks, we’ve had some team members traveling back and forth to Jakarta to lay the foundation for this event. The reason we chose Jakarta is mainly because of demand. Quite a few friends from Indonesia visited our Startup Asia Singapore conference and many wanted it to be held in Jakarta.

Our Jakarta conference will be held at the Upperroom Jakarta, a gorgeous conference and exhibition space located in the heart of Jakarta. The exhibition hall for startups and sponsors will be at least twice as large as the one we had in Singapore. You can also expect a larger crowd, and a good mix of local and international participants. For the Jakarta conference, we will also run a 30-hour Hackathon focusing on mobile hacks. Details of the Hackathon will be released at a later date.

Startup Arena

Our event is created for entrepreneurs. So we’re putting a huge focus on Startup Arena, where a group of selected startups across Asia will battle for US$10,000.

In the four weeks following our Singapore event, we learned that two startups who competed at Arena have already received fundings, and there are more to be announced soon apparently. While we can’t claim any credit for their successes, we do like to think that Arena is a great springboard for startups in Asia. So if you think your startup has what it takes, come and compete at Arena on June 7 and 8.

Alipay Hits 30 Million Mobile Downloads, Gets Most Luvvin’ on Android

China’s biggest online payment platform, Alipay, has said that its cross-platform mobile apps have been downloaded just over 30 million times in total. The company also revealed that it has seen transactions in these apps go up six-fold, compared to the previous year, as more people use the Alipay apps to pay for things on-the-go or just to deal with their accounts.

Alibaba-owned Alipay also stated that it sees 60,000 new mobile app activations per day. But it’s not clear precisely how many new users it’s getting on mobile, or how many can be counted as regular users.

Nonetheless, it’s a clear sign that e-commerce companies need quality, full-featured apps as more Chinese people start using smartphones. As for how many downloads Alipay is getting on various platforms, it revealed that Android is by far the most popular. The app’s download proportions can be seen in this graph:

The ‘others’ section contains Windows for mobile (both the old WM6 and the new WP7) with 1.7 percent share of downloads; generic JAVA apps account for 1.1 percent; and Blackberry weighs in with a meagre 0.1 percent (and then this total got rounded up to 3 percent).

Interestingly, these download stats chime in very nicely with observed web usage data that we looked at recently from a mobile ad platform. Those figures revealed that Android is effectively 2.3-times as popular as iOS in China, and now Alipay’s numbers suggest something very similar.

Alipay also told Chinese media this week that its mobile apps will get updates soon to add new features, such as enabling payments of utility bills whilst on-the-go.

Brands sometimes choose to involve celebrities as brand or event sponsors, which is a proven effective strategy as celebrities play a dominant role in driving Chinese social media. If you do so, take the time to analyze the Hall of celebrities and understand what type of celebrity your target audience is interested in. CIC recently observed that self-made stars such as Wuyi (武艺), the second runner up of a TV singing competition, had the most followed and highest buzz-generating account on Weibo, promoting the attractive notions that anything is possible and anyone can make it.

Most recent example, NBA player Jeremy Lin, has seen his Weibo account grow exponentially from a couple thousands at the end of last year to over 2.2 million today, after an outstanding initial sporting performance.

Social Media Dominated By American Platforms, But China a Strong Second

Swiss brand value rating agency BV4 has just released a report ranking what it says are the world’s top social brands. Not surprisingly, American social web services come out on top, but China is very well represented also.

スイスのブランド価値格付け機関であるBV4が最近発表したレポートランキングによると、上記の2カ国が世界の上位ソーシャルブランドとなっている。予想通り、アメリカのソーシャルウェブサービスがナンバーワンだが、中国も上位を占めている。

Facebook takes the top spot with an estimated brand value of about $29 billion, with YouTube and Twitter following with $18 billion and $13 billion respectively [1]. China’s entries in the top ten are Qzone in fourth ($11 billion), and the dueling Weibos from Sina and Tencent in fifth and eighth ($4 billion and $3.5 billion). Other Chinese services to break the top 30 include Renren (12th), Pengyou (14th), Kaixin (18th), Tudou (21st), and Youku (24th). For the full list of 30, check out BV4’s report.

But it’s interesting to ponder the growth of social in China where a couple of factors that could limit the nation’s platforms:

1. The looming issue of real name registration for social sites like Weibo.
2. The language barrier will likely limit their expansion beyond Chinese borders, and as b4V points out, they could reach a saturation point faster as a result.

Nevertheless, China is said to account for about half of all Asia’s social internet users (over 300 million this year according to eMarketer). And internet companies both in China and abroad will want a part of that market for a long time to come.

しかしながら、中国国内のソーシャルの成長を考える上で興味深いのは国家のプラットフォームを制約するようないくつかの要素があり得るということだ。

Step 1: Buy a GMAT Guide from Kaplan or Princeton Review. Get familiar with the test and brush up on fundamentals (math and grammar); also these books will give you a good base for test-taking and timing strategies.

Step 2: Take a GMAT Prep (2 free tests downloadable from MBA.com) - but don't waste these; these are free but very valuable tests. Take 1 after you go through the Guidebooks and save the second one for later. These tests will be representative of your GMAT score.

Step 3:Get a specialized Math and/or Verbal workbook from Kaplan, the 8-book set form Manhattan GMAT and do a deep dive into the fundamentals - this is what will help you crack the test - solid knowledge of Math and Grammar.

The brand-new QQBrowser for Mac has been built from the ground up for its new platform, so it doesn’t share too much with its popular Windows-version brethren. It comes with built-in support for Adobe Flash (as does Google’s Chrome browser these days), a choice of Chinese or English localization, and the marque feature is that it supports peer-to-peer (such as ed2k) and bit-torrent downloads. The browser defaults to using the company’s own Soso search engine, but you can switch that to Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) or Google in the settings.

The button at the far right that looks like a list is actually a shortcut to the three main areas behind the scenes: history, bookmarks, downloads. Regrettably there aren’t any keyboard shortcuts for the latter two actions, so you’ve pretty much got to click that icon. The biggest quirk – ‘bug’ perhaps – of the QQBrowser for Mac is that if you double-click the tab bar, it minimizes the whole browser window, whereas your instincts might tell you that it’d be a useful way to open a new tab (as occurs with Firefox).

Tencent has been leading the way among Chinese web companies by its bringing some of its core apps to the Mac. In addition to its ubiquitous QQ IM app – which we looked at last summer after it got video chat support – there’s also the QQ IME. Yes, that’s only two, but it’s two more than Baidu and most others.

QQ for Mac is a 38 MB download from its new homepage – but comes to nearly 100 MB once installed – and works only on OS X 10.6 and 10.7.
