Path to be Available in Chinese, Japanese, and Indonesian Soon

“Hello World,” says Path on its latest blog post. The social network which limits you to 150 of your closest friends is seeing a lot of traction in Asia. And to facilitate faster growth, Path is looking to translate its service into new languages. For Asia, it looks like the translation is being done to fuel growth in China, Japan, and Indonesia. Here’s an excerpt from the announcement:

When we talk about startups, we rarely take a look at the target users at the first place. Instead, we always place them the same way we deal with traditional industries: we look at the functions provided and divide them into different sectors: SNS, game, commerce, advertisement, media… For me, the business model on internet is simply two: either you sell products (virtual or real) directly to end-users who are willing to pay, or you sell advertisements because you covered a bunch of valuable users who may be willing to buy something because of the ads displayed.

ConnectCubed Makes Hiring For the Financial Sector More Fun

ConnectCubed is a Hong Kong based startup that hopes to make hiring for Wall Street fun, meritocratic, and scientific. The bulk of its users are finance undergrads who are looking for jobs. Their skills are accessed mainly through games. On ConnectCubed, members create profiles and play assessment games to build and showcase their finance skills. So far there are two games, one that follows a quiz format and another one is a trading simulator.

Chinese Internet Giant Tencent Eyes Indonesia Market

CyberAgent’s Net Impact Jakarta conference yesterday had a fun mixture of Japanese, Vietnam, and Chinese Internet companies. Among them was Tencent, whereby Sean Zhang, director of Tencent’s Mobile Global division, shared some background information about Tencent and also briefly spoke on the company’s plans to engage the Indonesian market.

Yes, you read that right. Tencent (HKG:0700) has set its eyes on Indonesia. In fact, Zhang shared on stage that Tencent already has a team of ten in Indonesia and is looking to hire more as it expands its operations.

Smartly, Tencent noted that Indonesia is very much a mobile centric nation. The Chinese internet giant is thus planning to introduce the QQ browser (we reviewed the mac version here) and also a Whatsapp-like mobile app, Qute, to the Indonesia market.

I was actually puzzled why Tencent chose to bring in Qute rather than Weixin, a popular group messaging app in China, owned by Tencent. I threw that question during Q&A and got an interesting answer.

Zhang explained that Weixin is mainly used by high-end smartphone users who are on Android or iPhones. It is a pity that we couldn’t find more time with Zhang to learn more details on Tencent’s plan in Indonesia. But both of us agreed to meet again soon. Coincidentally (or unfortunately for him), we are staying in the same apartment complex in Jakarta which makes meeting up way easier! Stay tuned!
