Li Zheng has told Chinese media that his startup quickly grew in just over two months to 500,000 users, and is now seeing 5,000 new smartphone-made videos being uploaded every day.Cyberagent Ventures and its parent company, the web firm CyberAgent (TYO:4751), know a lot about mobile apps and they also help developers reach the lucrative Japanese market. It’s not clear if that’s part of the strategy with its investment in iSheHui.We saw the same venture group splashing its cash just two weeks ago, but that time it was on a Vietnamese music service.
The game is coming in December in both English and Japanese, with other languages to follow soon after. In its announcement, GREE says that it is committed to “delivering a new and innovative social gaming experience” to the franchise. It will be interesting to see how the social element is integrated here.
"Social card games are considered the most popular social games in Japan. ‘Gang Domination’ will be Gameloft’s first social card game, and we’re thrilled to work on this project with a leading player in this market such as GREE."GREE’s two announcements come just a day after the company’s domestic rival DeNA made two big announcements of its own, landing a high-profile title of its own in Infinity Blade Cross, as well as finally launching its Daum Mobage platform in Korea."Did we mention we’re not fans of the Three Kingdoms genre? Oh yeah, we did. " ↩
"We expect Daum Mobage to quickly become South Korea’s most popular mobile gaming platform … By integrating DeNA’s Mobage platform with Daum’s services, including its influential mobile advertising network and mobile messenger service, we will strive to stimulate this new market and gather more than 10 million users with aggressive marketing and developer support."DeNA hopes that it can capitalize on the ever-growing smartphone market in Korea, which has grown as large as Japan’s, but where social/mobile games have far more room to grow.
Many know that Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg is one of the world’s youngest self-made billionaires. But Yoshikazu Tanaka amassed a whopping $1.6 billion fortune by the young age of 32. He is now 34.His entrepreneurial story dates back to 1999 when he was a fresh graduate. Prior to GREE Inc. Tanaka didn’t have any experience building a startup. But he was always a keen admirer of great Internet businesses. He told me that the the Japanese version of Wired magazine was his source of inspiration.

Akio Toyoda: Toyota's comeback kidFORTUNE -- When the final tally was made for 2011, Toyota Motor (TM), formerly the world's largest automaker, slipped to third place in production behind General Motors (GM) and Volkswagen. It's not surprising: Toyota has endured a string of calamities over the past three years -- natural and man-made -- that would make even the company's famous paranoia seem like sunny optimism. The latest is endaka, the strong yen that causes everything that Toyota manufactures in Japan to be more expensive and undermines its profitability. A November issue of Automotive News predicted "more misery" for Toyota as "sales slip, floods delay, shoppers stray."
I-2You can try hard to be a great boss in order to impress those you work for. Or you can do it because you care for the people who work for you and you want them to be successful in their jobs. The real answer is probably a combination of both reasons. But if you get your priorities set up right from the beginning, you can do both. By investing in your skills as a manager and by caring about the success of those who work for you, you can easily impress your bosses. When the people who work for you are successful, you are successful. Although being a great boss is made to look effortless by some people, it is hard work that requires planning, execution, and a willingness to take risks.
I-1Being a boss. Having to take responsibility for the work others perform under your guidance. If you are new to the job of being a boss, there's no time like the present to learn effective ways to do that job. If you have been a boss for years, you have everything to gain in putting forth new effort to become better at your job. There is no such thing as a perfect boss. No matter how good you may be, there is always room for improvement. To be a great boss, you first need to be very honest with yourself about why this position of authority is so important to you. You then need to ask yourself why you should be the best at the job you can be.
China VC Investment Grows 50% in 2011, 2012 Will Be DifferentThe Shanghai Daily reported yesterday that VC firms in China, invested in 50% more Chinese start-ups in 2011 compared to 2010. According to China Venture, a research firm, 976 firms received investment valued at US$8.95 Billion. In 2011, the average investment size was US$9.17 Million, up 30% from 2010.
However the second half of 2011, saw a slowdown in investment. Key reasons were the world economic news of doom and gloom, a saturated investment market and fierce competition among VCs. In the fourth quarter alone, the number of investments dropped by 43%. The trend is reflected in discussions with many entrepreneurs in Beijing about the difficulty of securing investment recently and in the coming months ahead. They are saying that 2012 is going to be a massive storm and start-ups need to prepare by scaling back costs to survive it.
Lightspeed Ventures Raising US$875 Million for US/China FundBloomberg reported that Lightspeed Ventures, an international VC firm is said to be finishing raising a new fund worth $875 million. $200 million is said to be ear marked for China based companies. This reflects a growing trend for U.S. VC’s to get a taste of the burgeoning Chinese market where start-ups can take advantage of the enormous opportunities to scale. In September last year, China’s most prominent start-up incubator, Innovation Works closed a US$180 million fund. The fund was backed by famous investors like Ron Conway of SV Angel and Yuri Milner of DST Global.

What is Sequoia India Doing in Singapore? An Interview with Shailendra Jit SinghShailendra Jit Singh is the managing director of Sequoia Capital India. That’s the sort of investment firm that entrepreneurs dream about. So what is Sequoia India doing in Singapore, and in Southeast Asia in general? We talked to Shailendra on the floor of our Startups in Asia (Singapore) event to hear more about Sequoia’s experience and its plans for the region.
What are you thinking in terms of expansion into Southeast Asia? That’s exactly the question I was anticipating – why are we here? In the last year, we have made four or five investments in companies that are headquartered here [in Southeast Asia] and have operations at least in India, perhaps the majority of the operations in India, but they increasingly have a value proposition and a footprint in more countries in Southeast Asia. We have currently maybe half a dozen companies doing business in Southeast Asia actively and we see many more of those.
CHAPTER 45-4When things get done more quickly and more efficiently, you have time to plan new activities that will enhance the productivity of your area. So, when you are faced with getting a job done, give your employees the chance to do it their way within the boundaries that you set for them. They will make mistakes, but that is OK. Mistakes can be fixed, and people learn a lot more when they have the chance to make mistakes that are theirs, not their boss's. Empowered people are motivated and productive people.
CHAPTER 45-1As a general rule, to motivate employees to take more responsibility for their work, empower them. Give them the power to do their jobs as they see fit within the boundaries you set for them. Once you have trained your employees about a job and how it fits into the bigger picture, and you have helped them understand the values that you hold for getting a job done, give them the authority and the responsibility to get it done as best they can.More than one way Many bosses want things done only the way that they would do them. Of course, that is always the prerogative of a boss.
CHAPTER 40-5Regular meetings keep everyone informed about how things are going and let employees. know that they are responsible for their own work behavior. They stay focused. And you have the chance to praise their work if they are completing the tasks you have asked them to complete. Employees live with some degree of uncertainty that they are not performing something correctly. Regular evaluation allows them the freedom to know how they are doing and to go on with the encouragement of their supervisor.
