Taobao to Launch An Online Education Marketplace

On a recent online-education event in Beijing, staff from Taobao revealed the plan of an independent education channel. Wow. Now the e-commerce tycoon comes to the heated online education and training market.

Accordingly this new vertical platform will be launched this year as a sub-channel “Taobao Classmates” (not official translation). This channel will aggregate online education sources, and class videos covering courses from exams tutoring to vocational training programs.

Airizu, the Airbnb clone backed by German capitalists Samwer brothers aiming to take on the China market, is found closed. The site, Airizu.com, now is redirected to Wimdu, the Europe-based travel rental site that is also built by Samwer brothers’ company Rocket Internet.

Less than two months ago we heard that Airizu had laid off 80% employees and Samwer brothers stopped funding the service. Airizu still has 20 employees who are managing accommodations for Wimdu, as reported (report in Chinese).

As founded by the notorious Samwer brothers, it was expected it would soon be sold to other players when it got traction and hype. ELong, one of the leading Chinese online travel services, and Homeway reportedly offered to buy it but were rejected by Samwer brothers. The rumored reason is the offered prices were lower than expected.

Brazil’s central bank held the line against inflation on Wednesday night in spite of signs of a concerning slowdown in economic growth and mass political protests that swept the country last month.
The central bank’s monetary policy committee, Copom, increased the benchmark Selic rate by 50 basis points to 8.5 per cent, its third consecutive increase bringing the total rise since it started tightening in April to 125 basis points.

“Copom evaluates that this decision will put inflation in decline and ensure this trend persists into next year,” the committee said in a brief statement.
