Foodie app Burpple gobbling up fresh funding of up to $6M

Singapore-based social food review app Burpple expects to raise up to US$6 million in series A funding from Tembusu Partners, SPH Media Fund, and Triumph Capital, it announced today.

Tembusu is a private equity firm that invests in fast-growing companies, while SPH Media Fund is the venture capital arm of Singapore Press Holdings. Triumph Capital facilitates transnational investments between Australia and China as well as other Asian markets.

Switzerland-based market expansion service DKSH has acquired a 20 per cent stake in Bangkok-based e-commerce solutions provider aCommerce for an undisclosed amount, reportedly in eight digits (US dollars).

“Taking this strategic investment is a huge win for us because it allows us to expand faster into new markets like Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam and onboard hundreds of brands,” said aCommerce Group CEO Paul Srivorakul, in an official statement.

The move comes a few weeks after DKSH President and CEO Joerg Wolle expressed his continued commitment to invest in ASEAN companies.

aCommerce was founded in 2013 and helps companies like L’Oreal, Nestlé and HP build their performance marketing, platform development, delivery, payment solutions and customer service to boost e-commerce sales.

With 140 clients, the core aCommerce markets are Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia.

“With the combined strengths and infrastructure, aCommerce can now offer a complete solution for B2C or B2B clients for both online and offline,” Srivorakul added.

Brett Loubser, head of WeChat Africa, said support from Tencent will include “technical integration and communications tactics across the Naspers stable and other suited channels.” Naspers is South Africa’s largest Internet and media group, offering a wide range of ecommerce services for businesses.

Beyond that, Tencent said that it’s “increasingly focused on integrating with early-stage businesses whose models strategically fit with, and clearly demonstrate, the power of the platform and its positioning in the market.” I’ve previously dived into some of the ways businesses are already using WeChat — and not just in China.

In fact, Tencent only just opened up its mobile payments service to overseas transactions for the first time last month, with the South Africa WeChat mobile wallet launch representing its maiden voyage beyond China.

“The fund will be used to identify and support tech-enabled businesses by assisting with rapid market access using the WeChat platform,” Tencent said in a blog posting.

“Access to markets was listed as one of the biggest inhibitors to growth for tech-enabled businesses in the recent Emerging Companies survey conducted by PWC and Silicon Cape.”

China’s DJI launches a crop dusting drone for farmers

Very soon you won’t just be seeing DJI drones smashing into lamposts or crashing down onto the White House lawn – they’ll also be flying over farms.

DJI today branched out of the consumer drone market and revealed the DJI Agras MG-1, a drone with eight rotors that can carry just over 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of liquid for crop-spraying purposes. It’s the company’s first agricultural drone.

Depending on terrain, it can fly autonomously, or in semi-automatic or manual modes. Other DJI drones also have autonomous flight modes.

The Chinese startup claims the new drone can cover between seven to 10 acres per hour and is over 40 times more efficient than manual spraying. The squirting is done by four ceramic nozzles, each powered by a motor. The MG-1 can adjust spraying intensity in coordination with its flying speed so as to ensure even coverage of all those tasty chemicals.
