In the "Ranking of World Cities One Wants to Visit During Travelling" survey results released by a leading travel magazine in America, Kyoto was chosen as Number 1 among Japan's cities for the first time last year.
Since it is expected that the number of foreign visitors will increase more and more from now on, English-speaking driver Daisuke Shibata who holds Kyoto Kantei certification is seeking out encounters with customers.
In the "ranking of the city in the world where people would like to visit on trip" that was announced in major American travel magazine, Kyoto was ranked at top for the first time as a city in Japan last year.
While the number of foreign customers is expected to be increased in the future, I asked Mr.Daisuke Shibata who has Kyoto Test 1st grade and is a driver with English conversation skill about an episode with the customers.
They get excited especially those who visit Kyoto for the first time when theu see real Maiko and Geisya walking around the town.
it is like "This is the Kyoto!" For them.
▪ What confuse or surprise foreign visitors most?
Even it is normal for Japanese people but if there is no English description, they get confused and don't know what to do.
For instance, we should not get on the wood board with shoes on when you take off your shoes in temples.
While this mostly applies to ones that visit Kyoto for the first time, they get really excited when they see real geisha walking the streets of Gion and shout "THIS is what Kyoto is about!"
●What confuses or astonishes foreign guests when they first arrive in Kyoto?
Things that are obvious to Japanese, but not explained in English, which makes guests confused about what to do. For example, they get confused when they don't take off their shoes at a temple and get scolded.
They seem to think they want to experience the casual Japanese style while they like Omotenashi such as tea ceremony dishes, on the other hand.
- Please tell us what you try to do when you escort foreign customers.
I try to attend them as individual, getting rid of stereotype of foreigners (It is same in case of Japanese customers).

▪ How do you spend your day off?
Recently I spend my day off with my daughters.
I simply enjoy but sometimes I get surprised by their imaginations or creactivities.
I think I need to be more flexible when I am with foreigners.

◆How do you spend your holidays?
I often spend my holiday with my two daughters recently. Even though I simply enjoy with them, sometimes I am surprised by their ideas or points of view.
The flexible thinking free from Japanese common sense might be necessary when I keep company with foreigners.
