Chope Launches New iPhone App, Ready to Take Your Reservations

Singaporean online reservation site Chope has recently launched its new iPhone app – and it’s looking absolutely beautiful and sleek. It comes as a pleasant surprise to know that the app is powered by social food journal startup Burpple, which designed and developed the application.

Arrif Ziaudeen, CEO and founder of Chope, was highly enthusiastic when he showed the app (pictured below) to me during our chat over coffee. It has a list of approximately 130 restaurants that users can browse from, discover restaurants nearby, find out more information such as the address, type of cuisine, opening hours, and it even includes suggestions (in the “What We Love” category) from the team at Chope. Of course, when you’re all ready and satisfied with your selection, you can start booking from the app itself, anytime and anywhere. How convenient is that?

The iPhone app comes in handy for folks who are time-starved and highly mobile. It basically aims to be a “one-stop shop,” for diners, with all restaurants listed and specially curated by the Chope team. Arrif also tells us that the team takes a lot of pride in its selection, and makes sure that the restaurants are of quality for its users.

時間のない人やモバイル度の高い人には便利なアプリだ。レストランをリストアップしChope チームによって特別に企画推進されている Chope は、 基本的に、食事をする人にとっての「ワンストップ・ショップ」となることを目指している。また、Arrif は同チームが選んだレストランの質に高い誇りを持っており、ユーザーにとって満足のいくレストランを紹介するようにしている。

So now you can say goodbye to miscommunication while booking over the phone and look forward to making reservations on your mobile, even at the wee hours in the morning. This is a pretty smart move because it basically taps into the additional pool of users who would do their research in the middle of the night when these restaurants are usually closed for the day. Once the booking is done, according to Arrif, the booking information will be seamlessly keyed into the table management system (pictures below) at participating restaurants. Users can even indicate if they want indoor or outdoor dining.

Apart from having Burpple as its mobile strategic partner, Chope is also working with TimeOut Singapore to reward readers who book via its website with a 20 percent discount off of their bill.

Chope’s revenue model basically comes from their 130 restaurant customers, who are charged a subscription fee for using their table management system, and a booking fee for each diner coming through their platform. The team is currently receiving around 15,000 bookings (and growing) per month, which is a pretty impressive figure for a small country like Singapore. They are targeting the foodies who would love to try out the newest and hottest restaurants on the Singapore dining scene.

The site looks like a Pinterest clone at first glance – as founder Tareef Jafferi concedes when talking to us via email – but all that collating and easy searching does indeed make it an interesting community. Tareef explains:

From first inspection we may look like a Pinterest clone. However […] our core concept has always been about building a community of like-minded individuals. China and India Have Most Mobile Subscribers, But Account for Lower Proportion of Global Revenue [Report]

Mobile market analyst extraordinaire Chetan Sharma has just published his annual State of the Global Mobile Industry report, and it has a number of important insights and observations regarding China, India, and other Asian nations.

His presentation is exhaustive, with a total of 87 slides which you can browse in full below. But here’s a short round-up of some of the more notable points pertaining to Asia:

優れたモバイルマーケットアナリストの Cheta Sharma 氏が毎年恒例の「世界のモバイル業界の現状」レポートを発表した。このレポートには、中国、インド、その他アジア諸国に関する重要な見解や観察が数多く記されている。

徹底的なこのプレゼンは全87ページにも及ぶ（全文は下に掲載）が、アジアに関連する注目すべきポイントの要約を以下に紹介しておく。

China won the race to a billion mobile users over India. This is interesting, as Sharma pointed out in his last report that India was poised to overtake China. Looking back he says that corruption dragged down growth for India. Also of note is Russia in fourth, and Indonesia in sixth in overall subscriptions (slide 28).

While China and India collectively account for 37 percent of the global population, they account for a marginally lower proportion – 27 percent – of the world’s mobile subscriptions. But what’s really remarkable is that these subscribers only account for 12 percent of the global mobile revenue (slide 29).

中国はインドよりも先にモバイルユーザー10億人を達成した。面白いのは、Sharma 氏は前回のレポートでインドが中国を追い抜くと指摘していたからだ。過去を振り返り、同氏はインドにおける腐敗がモバイル加入者の成長を阻害したのだと言っている。また、総加入者数において、４位にロシア、6位にインドネシアがランクインしていることも注目に値する（スライド28ページ）。

In contrast, the US still leads in data revenue, followed by Japan (whose carriers Softbank, Docomo, and Au are among the highest ARPU in the world) and China. Korea is listed in the sixth position (slide 23).

In terms of total revenue the US leads, with Japan ranked second, and China third (slide 23).

InMobi Sees iOS Falling in Hong Kong, Android Invading [INFOGRAPHIC]

Mobile ad platform InMobi has been busy these past few days crunching ad impressions stats from across Asia, giving us insights into growing smartphone usage in various countries. Now it’s Hong Kong’s turn, where mobile advertising grew 656 percent from Q4 2010 to the same period at the end of 2011. But the picture in Hong Kong is a bleak one for Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), whose iOS presence in the Chinese SAR fell 16.1 percent; in contrast, Android seemed to grow by a staggering 36.8 percent, and is now the dominant mobile OS in Hong Kong by some margin.

Smartphones as a whole now account for 80 percent of all of InMobi’s observed advertising impressions, squeezing down features-phones – or “advanced phones” as the company calls them – from 38 percent at the end of 2010 down to just 20 percent at the end of 2011.

It’s all in interesting contrast to InMobi’s stats for Vietnam, which we looked at last week – but of course, Hong Kong is a technologically much more advanced market.

There’s also good news for Samsung (005930:KS) in there, as it now has the first- and third-most popular phone in Hong Kong. Here’s the full infographic, which you can click to enlarge:

Focusing on Mobile and Local Discounts, DDMap Bags $40 Million in Funding

Chinese online city listings company DDMap has today revealed a new and sizable round of funding. CEO Xu Longjiang, talking to Chinese media, said the financing was worth US$40 million and was led by US-based CID Capital and China-oriented F&H Fund Management.

Much of DDMap’s business is actually in local promotions via its mobile apps DDCoupons, DDLife, and the newer DDCheckins. Therefore, Xu Longjiang says that much of the funding will go towards investment in its smartphone apps and this “local lifestyle” and discounts sector. For example, through partnerships with venues in over 40 Chinese cities, users of the DDCoupons app could get an immediate in-store discount of, say, 20 percent without the need for printing a voucher or anything.

The Shanghai-based company was started up in 2005 and has received funding in the past from HTC (TPE:2498) in a $9million round, and also from Morningside Group and KTB Ventures before that.

In addition to its mobile internet business, DDMap has a daily deals portal, and online maps and local bus routes. It’s up against local promotions from the likes of the startup Buding, as well as major group buy and review sites such as Dianping.
