China’s E-Commerce Giant Launches its Taobao Browser

China’s e-commerce king, Taobao, now has a PC web browser of its own that’s aimed at – surprise, surprise – web shoppers and providing security when making online payments. In addition, it boasts mouse gestures, certain forms of ad-blocking, and a “dual-core” rendering engine that uses either WebKit or Trident – as used by Internet Explorer (IE) – depending on the task at hand.

中国 eコマース業界の最大手 Taobao（淘宝）は、独自のPCウェブブラウザをローンチした。その目的は、（驚くことに）ウェブショッピングで、オンライン決済時のセキュリティーを提供することだ。これに加えて、同ブラウザは、マウスジェスチャー機能、ある種の広告ブロック機能、そして、与えられたタスクに応じて、インターネット・エクスプローラ（IE）にも使われているような、WebKitもしくはTridentを利用した「デュアルコア」レンダリングエンジンを備えている。

Taobao Browser came out a few weeks ago, and today got bumped up to v1.0.14. Its focus on enabling shopping means that the parent company’s product search engine, eTao, is one of the search engine options along with Google and Baidu. Plus, the default homepage, tao.123.com, features a prominent Taobao search bar. Here’s the new tabs page (click to enlarge):

Additional features include support for ‘skins’ for theming, bookmarks syncing via AliCloud – which will hook up with the mobile browser in your AliYun phone, an emphasis on safety certificates to help avoid being duped by scam shopping sites, and a whole section devoted to your Alipay online payments. Of course, there’s not much there that couldn’t be done in most other Chinese-made browsers, or with Firefox with a few awesome extensions. In the past, the e-commerce company had been partnering with Microsoft on special Alipay-badged versions of IE8 and IE9 – it’s not clear if that will continue as well.

更なる機能には、装飾用の「スキン」、Alicloud経由で同期したブックマーク（これはAliYun携帯のモバイルブラウザとも連動）、詐欺のショップサイトに騙されないようにするためのセキュリティー確認、そしてオンライン決済のAliPay（支付宝）専用セクションなどがある。もちろん、他の中国製ブラウザのほとんど、もしくはいくつかの素晴らしい拡張機能を備えたFirefoxにおいても、できないことはあまりない。淘宝は過去に、アリペイブランドのIE8とIE9のカスタマイズ版でマイクロソフトと提携をしていたが、これが今後も継続されるのかは不明だ。

The main standout feature, I reckon, is the mouse gestures built in to the Taobao Browser, so that, for example, a swipe in the shape of an ‘L’ will close the current tab. Such gestures are usually only seen on mobile browsers, though the Japanese Sleipnir browser was one of the first to bring it to the desktop.

目立った主な機能は、私が思うに、マウスジェスチャー機能が搭載されていることだ。だから、例えば、Lの字にスワイプすれば、今開いているタブが閉じられる。このようなジェスチャーは通常は、モバイルブラウザだけに見られるものだが、この機能をデスクトップに導入した最初の企業の１社は日本のSleipnir（スレイプニル）だった。

Alibaba is coming very late to this game. Baidu’s (NASDAQ:BIDU) own very similar web browser – especially in its also being dual-core Webkit and IE – has been out for over a year and recently got refreshed as v2.0. Meanwhile, going even further back, Qihoo’s (NYSE:QIHU) 360 Safe Browser has surpassed usage of IE in China by some metrics. Lots of other web companies in China have their own windows on the web as well, each tailored to a certain area – such as Tencent’s QQ Browser being a useful way of funneling traffic to its struggling Soso.com search engine.

Alibaba（阿里巴巴）のブラウザ部門への参入はとても遅い。Baidu（百度、ナスダック：BIDU）独自のブラウザも非常に似ていて（特に、WebkitとIEのデュアルコアを持っていること）、ローンチしてから１年以上で、最近、バージョン2.0にアップグレードしたばかりだ。一方、さらに遡ると、いくつかの統計で、Qihoo（奇虎、NYSE:QIHU）の360 Safe Browser はIEの利用度を勝った。その他にも、独自のウェブブラウザを持つ中国のウェブ企業は多く、それぞれが特定の分野に合わせたブラウザを作っている。例えば、TencentのQQブラウザは、同社の業績が振るわない検索エンジン Soso.comへのトラフィックを集中させるのに有効なブラウザになっている。

Guess What? Tencent Clones Zynga’s Draw Something [LEAKED PICTURES]

No sooner has the smash-hit social game Draw Something been bought up by Zynga [1] than we hear that China’s Tencent (HKG:0700) has already cloned and localized it. The promo images (above and below) suggest that the crafty remake will be called Guess What and will soon appear in an iPhone version.

Since it might be impractical to use Chinese characters in the Pictionary-style game, it seems that Tencent’s Guess What will rely on the romanization – aka: pinyin – so that all the possible letters can be included as a clue. From this leaked image, it appears to be inevitably integrated with Tencent’s own QQ Games platform:

Zynga が大ヒットソーシャルゲームの「Draw Something」をリリースするとすぐに、私達は中国のTencent（騰訊、HKG:0700）がすでにその類似ゲームを作り、ローカライズしていると聞いた。そのプロモーション画像（参照：上と下）を見ると、その巧みなリメイク版は「Guess What（中国語名：猜猜看、意味：何だと思う、当ててみて）」という名前で、iPhone 向けにまもなくリリースされるようだ。

Pictonary（ピクショナリー）系のゲームに中国語漢字を使うのはゲームとして成り立たないようなので、Tencent はローマ字（別名：ピンイン）を用い、ヒントには答えとして可能性のあるアルファベット文字を表示している。この流出した画像を見ると、当然ながら、Tencent の QQ Games プラットフォームに組み込まれているようだ。

Tencent is China’s social gaming giant, running the full gamut from the most casual of social games right on up to MMO titles like Crossfire.

However, let’s not forget that Zynga (NASDAQ:ZNGA) isn’t exactly innocent of such light-fingered lifting, having essentially purloined its iconic FarmVille game from the Chinese social network Kaixin.

Quick to the Draw

Tencent は中国のソーシャルゲーム大手企業で、ほとんどのカジュアルなソーシャルゲームから「Crossfire」などのMMO（多人数参加型ゲーム）までの全域にわたるゲームを運営している。
しかし、Zynga（NASDAQ:ZNGA）が手先の器用な盗みに関して、完全に潔白というわけではない。同社の「FarmVille」は本質的には、中国のソーシャルネットワーク Kaixin（開心）のゲームを真似たものだ。

Tencent’s QZone to Release A New Feature, Called Timeline, Like Facebook’s

Facebook unveiled its Timeline feature back in September 2011. Soon, QZone, Tencent’s social network which claims 552millions active users, will release a new feature, named the same, Timeline.

My friend, Peter Zheng, the product manager of QZone shared a screenshot of Timeline on his weibo. He tweeted:

Users will be able to share every great moment on its Timeline. Images, videos, diary or any shared information, even activities on the 3rd parties sites, anything could be memorized and cherished using Timeline.

Tencent の QZone に新機能が登場、その名も Facebook と同じ「タイムライン」

Facebook は2011年9月に「タイムライン」を発表した。Tencent（騰尋）のソーシャルネットワークで、5億5200万人のアクティブユーザーを抱えているという QZone に、まもなく新機能が導入される。その名も「タイムライン」。

友人の Peter Zheng が QZone のプロダクトマネジャーで、そのタイムラインのスクリーンショットを Weibo（微博）でツイートしてくれた。

ユーザーは、すべての素晴らしい時をタイムラインを使って共有することができる。イメージや動画、日記、もしくは共有できる情報なら何でも、それから、QZone 以外のサイトのアクティビティーだって共有できる。タイムラインを使えば、何でも大切に思い出に残すことができる。

Timeline feature currently is only open to a very limited group of users to test out, so we have not got chance to tell the difference between QZone’s and Facebook’s, yet. But, According to a developer from QZone’s Timeline team, he described this feature on his personal blog as such:

QZone Timeline is a cluster of functions that allow the user to describe, integrate and document the previous, current and approaching information which he/she values with resources of text, picture, video and etc. into the basic unit of event.

現在、このタイムライン機能はテストランのために、ごく限られたユーザーしか利用できない。だから、私は QZone と Facebook のタイムラインがどう違うのかを見ることができない。だが、QZone の「タイムライン」チームのデベロッパーが自身のブログで次のように説明している。

QZone のタイムラインは多くの機能が集まったもので、ユーザーが大切と思う過去・現在・未来の出来事を文章、写真やビデオなどを使って、イベントごとに描き、まとめ、記録することができる。

He also said the team studied Facebook Timeline, but it’s Not a copy because this project actually started in middle 2011, i.e. even before Facebook unveiled its own. The idea initially was just a Calendar + Events, he wrote.

The following is a screenshot of QZone’s Timeline from Peter Zheng. It does not look like Facebook’s Timeline, I guess.

ZeptoLab (Cut the Rope)

Russia’s answer to Rovio‘s “Angry Birds”, ZeptoLab‘s “Cut the Rope” has reached over 100 million game downloads on iOS and Android. The UK and Moscow-based ZeptoLab also released a “Cut the Rope” sequel. The company leverages its Om Nom game character by branching out into comic books, plush toys, board games and kidswear via merchandising deals.

Nginx

While it’s hard to beat Microsoft, Russia’s Nginx did it. The lightweight, high-performance web server, reverse proxy and e-mail proxy software provider Nginx is the #2 web server software on the Web, behind only Apache. Founded by one of Russia’s leading online portals, Rambler‘s engineer Igor Sysoev, Nginx raised $3 million from BV Capital, MSD Capital and Runa Capital to make its free web server a commercial success.

Jelastic

Funded by Moscow and Berlin-based Runa Capital, a California and Russia-based Jelastic offers Java hosting platform-as-a-service (PaaS). Having just become commercially available in Europe and the US, Jelastic PaaS significantly saves costs for Java application customers.

Nginx

Microsoft の打倒は難しいが、ロシアの Nginx は Microsoft 打倒に成功した。同社は、軽量で高性能なWebサーバ、リバースプロキシ、電子メールプロキシを提供しており、ウェブのサーバソフトでは第２位となっている（第１位は Apache）。ロシアのオンラインポータル大手「Rambler」のエンジニア、Igor Sysoev 氏によって設立され、 無料のウェブサーバを商業的に成功させるため、BV Capital、MSD Capital や Runa Capital から300万ドルの資金を調達した。

Jelastic

With over 1.4 million downloads and growing, Speaktoit has a 4.6 rating out of more then 25,000 user reviews on Google Play (Android Market).

Game Insight

Started in late 2009 as a seed investor and publisher for social game development studios from Russia, Game Insight claimed $50 million revenues from social and mobile games last year. Being one of the leading game companies on Android with titles like Paradise Island, Moscow-based Game Insight is now heading to the US market with a publisher model.

Speaktoit

Siri は iPhone 4S に搭載されているパーソナルアシスタント的機能だが、Android デバイス向けのサービスではロシアの Speaktoit は一番いい選択の１つだ。ダウンロード数はすでに140万を超え、その数は今も伸びている。Google Play (Androidマーケット) では、25,000件を超えるユーザーレビューで、評価点4.6 を獲得している。

Game Insight

Game Insight は、ロシアのソーシャルゲーム開発企業向けのシードインベスター／パブリッシャーとして2009年後半に設立された。同社の発表によると、ソーシャル／モバイルゲームによる昨年度の収益は5,000万ドル。「Paradise Island」など Android 向けゲームの開発企業大手の１社として、パブリッシャーモデルを携えアメリカへ事業拡大を進めている。

Is China’s E-commerce Market Growing Too Fast?

Two days ago, I wrote about how “China Wants US$2.8 Trillion E-Commerce Sales by 2015, But Please Stop Bleeding Money First!” I highlighted how China’s rapid development through the internet has superseded the ability to manage and control it. Although higher internet penetration leads to higher sales, it doesn’t mean higher profits. Many famous e-commerce players are still struggling to become sustainably profitable. Li Guoqing, DangDang’s CEO berated 360Buys ability to do e-commcerce as “bullshit” and said for every dollar they earn, they spend four.

中国の eコマース市場の成長は急速すぎるのか？

2日前、「2015年までに eコマース販売2兆8000億米ドルを目指す中国：でも、赤字経営はやめてくれ！」という記事を書き、インターネットを通じた急速な発展によって、インターネットを運営・管理する能力が失われていることを強調した。インターネットの普及率が高ければ売上げも伸びるが、利益率も高くなるというわけではない。持続的な収益を上げようと苦労しているeコマース企業は今も多い。DangDang（当当網）の CEO Li Guoqing（李国慶）氏は、360Buy（京東商城）の eコマース事業能力は「ナンセンス」だと厳しく非難し、360Buy は１ドル稼ぐのに４ドルも費やしていると述べた。

Now China Daily has reported about customers suing 360Buy.com for failing to uphold its end of the deal to provide sightseeing trips for 1 yuan or 16 cents. This highlights another pillar lacking in China’s heavy shift towards supporting e-commerce: rules, regulations, policy and law.

China Daily は先ほど、顧客が 360Buy を訴えているというニュースを発表した。360Buy が、参加費１元（16セント）の観光旅行に応募した顧客を欺いたというものだ。これは、eコマース事業をサポートする中国の大きな転換期にもう１つ別の要素が欠けていることを強調している。つまり、規則、規制、政策、そして法律だ。

So what happened? According to China Daily, 360Buy advertised several sightseeing packages, including one to Shaoxing, a historic city in Zhejiang province for a ridiculous 1 yuan per customer on March 19. The deal included breakfast, one night’s stay in a hotel and entrance fees for some scenic areas. Nearly 1,700 people purchased the trip online. But subsequently 360Buy cancelled the deal and refunded the money back to customer accounts. 360Buy claimed they made a technical error and the page was only meant to be a test page.

それで、360Buyで何が起こったのか？China Daily によると、同社は3月19日にいくつかのパッケージツアーを宣伝しており、その中に、浙江省にある歴史的な街の紹興にたったの１元で行けるというツアーもあった。このツアーには、朝食代、１泊のホテル料金、観光スポットへの入場料も含まれていた。1700人に近い人がオンラインでそのチケットを購入したが、その後、360Buy はこのツアーをキャンセルし、顧客の口座にお金を返金した。360Buy は、技術的なエラーがあり、ツアーが掲載されていたページは試験的なページだったと主張した。

Enraged customers who were hopeful of going on a nice trip for a ridiculous small fee are now taking 360Buy to court and now want them to honour its contract and offer fair compensation. In response, 360Buy has agreed to compensate involved customers with 20 yuan voucher that can be used on the site. But many are not satisfied, feeling mislead and cheated.

たったの１元で素敵な旅行に行こうと思っていた顧客は激怒し、360Buy を訴え、同社に契約を守り、公平な賠償をするよう求めている。それに対し、360Buy はツアーチケットを購入した顧客に同社のサイトで利用できる20元の割引券を提供して賠償することに同意した。だが、多くの人がそれでは満足しておらず、騙され欺かれたと思っている。

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced that the total volume of e-commerce in China will hit 18 trillion yuan in 2015, 4x the current level. At that pace, people like Mo Daiqing, an analyst with China E-commerce Research Center believe that policies and regulation still lag between the developments of e-commerce. China Daily says that according to a guideline issue by the Ministry of Commerce last year, comprehensive laws and national information for e-commerce credit are only expected to be set up by 2015.

中国の工業情報化部は、同国のeコマース市場規模は2015年に18兆元に達すると発表しており、これは現在の市場規模の4倍だ。中国のeコマース研究センター・アナリストの Mo Daiqing 氏らは、このペースを考えると、eコマースの発展段階における政策と規制が依然として遅れていると信じている。Chaina Daily は、昨年発表された商務省のガイドラインをもとに、包括的な法律とeコマース企業の評価に関する国の情報は2015年になった初めて確立されるだろうと伝えている。

In some ways, China’s e-commerce development is very impressive. I have ordered products from 360Buy and have been impressed with their same day or next day delivery. By using China’s relatively lower pool of manual labourers, such amazing logistic and distribution networks can be achieved. Watching Chinese friends place orders on e-commerce sites with as much ease and speed as writing an e-mail is also impressive.

ある意味において、中国における eコマース成長は目覚ましい。私も 360Buy で商品を注文したことがあるが、商品が当日もしくは翌日に配達され、非常に驚いた。手作業という中国の比較的低レベルの労力を使っても、そのような素晴らしい物流配送ネットワークが達成できる。中国人の友達がメールを書くのと同じくらい簡単にそして素早くオンラインショップで注文しているのを見ると感心する。
