Immediate revenue isn’t the current goal, but rather most companies like Yahoo and Multiply are positioning themselves to ride the wave in Indonesia.

Even in Japan , I understand there are several social commerce-related companies which are looking to expand to Taiwan , Hong Kong or Indonesia . These countries have a high number of Facebook users, especially Indonesia and Taiwan at 35 and 12 million respectively.

However this is just a start. Indonesia has a population of more than 240 million users and only 45 million of those are online users. Out of that group, 35 million are Facebook users. With the Indonesian government pushing hard to increase national internet penetration, the country looks like a good bet to be a rising tech-savvy nation with monetization coming at a later stage as the nation becomes more affluent.

India is also another huge market to watch for potential social commerce opportunities. India has more than 25 million Facebook users and about 3 million Twitter users. India’s 100 million Internet users (out of total population of 1.2 billion) were expected to generated $10 billion in e-commerce sales this year. A fair share of that could be generated from social commerce.

While Facebook and Twitter are important elements of social commerce, sales don’t necessary need to be generated through social media . The group buying model, for example, is a successful form of social commerce. Anything that turns social influence into sales is considered social commerce. It’s exciting time ahead for both Indonesia and India, and I’m sure several entrepreneurs are already poised to ride this social commerce wave.

China Group-buying Cooled Down In April, Guangzhou Hit Hardest Down 25%

It seems the group buying heat in China is eventually winding down, according to a report by Tuan800, a leading group buying service navigation site in China, this past April saw the first time recession in Beijing and Guangzhou online deals market since Tuan800 compiled such data. Beijing and Guangzhou are separately the biggest and third largest group buying market in China. While in Shanghai, the second largest Chinese daily deals market, group buying service was also suffered a setback with slow growth.

April group-buying volume: Guangzhou down 25%, Beijing down 6% and Shanghai down 3% from March

Group buying sales in Guangzhou fell to RMB 27.5 million (US$ 4 million) in April, down 25% from March, after being stagnant for the past few months. Beijing volume is down 6% month-on-month to RMB 76.15 million (US$ 11.7 milion) in April, and Shanghai claimed RMB 66.45 million (US$ 10 million) in online deal sales in this April, down 3% from March.

According to Tuan800’s report, less than 300 new group buying service emerged in China last month, which is far less than the 732 of newcomers to the area in this March.

Alipay Shifted to Jack Ma’s Private Company To Speed Up Getting Government License


According to a SEC filing, Alipay, the payment business of Alibaba Group was restructured so that it is now controlled by a separate company, owned mostly by Alibaba Group Chief Executive Officer Jack Ma. Yahoo said the shift was necessary to expedite getting a license for Alipay.

Last year, Chinese government started to formally regulate its online payment industry. Last December, the Chinese central bank, People’s Bank of China, announced the details for third party payment licences.

SECのファイリングによると、Alibabaグループの支払いビジネスは再編成されて、現在ではAlibabaグループの代表取締役のJack Ma氏がほとんどを所有する別個の会社が統率している。YahooによるとAlipayの認可を得るために急ぐことが必要だったのだ。

And following the announcement, the first batches of online payment companies started to apply for the licences. They included Alibaba’s Alipay, Tencent’s Tenpay and government back China Unionpay, etc.

To get a license from the People’s Bank of China to operate its payment business, Alipay was restructured as a Chinese domestic company to speed up the process. And the company is mostly owned by Alibaba Group Chief Executive Officer Jack Ma.

The news cause Yahoo to dropped 7.3% yesterday, as Yahoo owned about 40% of Alibaba Group. The shift of Alipay to Jack Ma’s private company sound like a dilution of value for Yahoo’s investors.

その発表に従い、オンライン支払い会社の第1グループは認可を申請し始めた。その中にはAlibaba's Alipay、Tencent's Tenpay、政府後援のChina Unionpayなどが含まれる。

However, many Chinese internet companies are structured as domestic companies to get the necessary licenses. But, their profits are transfered to off-shore vehicles for listing in overseas market. If you look carefully into company structure of Sina, Sohu, etc, you would find there is a local company doing all the work and controlled by its founder or CEO. But its profit is transferred to an offshore vehicle, which is listed in the U.S.

In my view, if Jack Ma’s private company will be transferring all its profit back to Alibaba Group, and therefore to Yahoo, there is nothing for investors to worry about. But, if this is not the case, I think investors should consider firing the management of Yahoo, as they allow a valuable asset to shift out of the company right before their eyes.

And accroding to Shao Yibo, former founder of EachNet(acquired by Ebay for US$ 150 million in 2003 ), such move could
be a compromise among Yahoo, Softbank and Alibaba for getting Alipay a license. All three parts involved would make
further arrangements to make sure no one’s cake gets ravend.

SoftBank, the second biggest stakeholder of Alibaba, said that the three parts are still negotiating.

A Credit Suisse report remarks that, the Alipay restructure is a particular event, which will not reflect badly on Tencent or Tenpay, a Tencent online payment solution similar to Alipay. Credit Suisse believes that it’s the most conservative way to transform Alipay to a completely domestic company.

Alibaba社に2番目に多く出資しているSoftbankによると、3社はまだ交渉を続けている。

There are so many bands around that 'sound' good but they don't really have any songs, they don't have any hooks, nothing to hold on to.

I think songwriting is the hardest skill to perfect as a musician (and something I'm still trying to do) and lots of people get caught up with the 'sound' of their music without focusing on songwriting.

I think if you can listen to a crappy tape recording of a song and that song still gets across then it's a great song.

Renren Almost Dropped Below Its IPO Price

In just four trading days, Renren dropped almost below its IPO price. Yesterday, the stock fell another 8% to close at US$14.75, which is almost equal to IPO price of US$14.

The so-called China’s Facebook seems to be losing its luster. In fact, as we have previously noted, besides a valuation too high, the company has other problems, too. And it is doubtful whether it is really “China’s Facebook”.

But what is pushing the Chinese internet stock, including Renren, beyond their fundamentals, to ridiculous high valuation, at the first place?? I read a comment from SeekingAlpha, a popular U.S. website on trading stock. The post is probably from a typical U.S. trader:

RenrenはIPO値をほとんど下回った。

ここ4日間の取引で、RenrenはIPO値をほとんど下回った。昨日、株価はさらに8％下がって終値は14,75USドル、IPO値だと14USドルにほぼ等しい。
