DeNA and Yahoo Japan’s Yahoo Mobage passes 10 million users

DeNA and Yahoo Japan’s joint social gaming service, Yahoo Mobage, has passed the 10 million users mark.

It seems like DeNA’s rebranding to a fun image isn’t the only positive change that it is experiencing. Just recently, the partnership between DeNA and Yahoo Japan takes on another notch as the joint service Yahoo Mobage passes 10 million users in Japan. In early November, both companies renewed their agreement and has seen growing numbers of users signing up for that service. The updated agreement sees the fundamental joint service to port to mobile devices instead of just serving PCs.

CyberAgent Ventures invests in Indonesian online baby product seller Bilna

CyberAgent Ventures, the VC subsidiary of Japanese Internet company CyberAgent, has announced this week an investment in Bilna, an ecommerce platform for baby products in Indonesia. Terms of the deal were not revealed.

The founding team behind Bilna, Ferry Tenka, Jason Lamuda and Eka Himawan, are also the founders of group buying site Disdus, which were bought out by Groupon in April 2011. Bilna, which launched in July, sells formula and food, furniture, toys, clothes, as well as bath and skincare products for babies and toddlers.

In the months since then, the buzz for social discovery apps has largely died down and each of these startups has taken a different approach to adapt. Sonar, for example, has focused on adding features that let users find and interact with people they actually know rather than strangers. Meanwhile, Highlight is working on ways to help users find out more relevant information about people who are nearby.

Domestic Brands Account for 60% of China’s Smartphone Market

Over the past couple of years, Chinese companies have been cranking out smartphones like clockwork while global brands like Nokia and LG have busied themselves with losing market share left and right. The result, according to research firm Canalys, is that as of Q3 2012, domestic brands account for 60 percent of China’s smartphone market.

A company in Japan is offering a clever mobile map alternative that combines a conventional map display with an augmented reality view in a split-screen presentation. It’s called AR-Maps, and is now available in English thanks to a recent upgrade.

On innovation and the dream of becoming a startup hub in Asia

The Philippines has been touted to be the next startup hub in the Asia Pacific region. But will our increasing focus on outsourced services be a limiting factor?

Developer and startup organizations are holding startup competitions, hackathons, meetups and other community activities in the Philippines. There seems to be an influx of interest in the local startup scene, be it in Manila, Cebu, Davao or other regions that support entrepreneurship in the country. Big corporations like Globe, Smart and First Pacific are also getting into higher gear with their involvement in the startup scene. You’d think it’s all smooth sailing from here.

China Music Industry to Be Shaking up with Toughest Copyright Regulation, Blessing or Blast?

China’s music industry is about to go through a major shake-up by year-end as, according to people familiar with the matter, Chinese government, partnering with portal site Sina, is setting up a new firm to pull off toughest ever regulation over digital music copyrights. In other words, the new venture, from which all Chinese music services would have to purchase copyrighted music, would be monopolizing China’s digital music market.

Mobile rewards network Kiip brings its service to Japan, eyes expansion to Asia

Kiip, a U.S. based startup which provides mobile phone gamers with real life rewards, has announced a partnership with Japanese based Digital Garage, which will see Kiip expanding into Asia.

In this first article, I provide a general overview of naming. Specifically, I examine the challenge of naming companies, the importance of creating a good name and pre-naming preparations.

Naming on the web is difficult because it’s a multiple-step process that’s a mix of art, science and pure perseverance.
