Bloomberg: Chinese e-commerce retailer Jingdong seeking $2 billion IPO

Beijing-based online retailer Jingdong, previously known as 360Buy, reportedly seeks to raise $2 billion in an IPO in the second half of this year, according to Bloomberg. Bloomberg cited “three people with knowledge of the matter.”

When Tech in Asia reached out to Jingdong for comment, their spokesperson replied, “JD.com has a corporate policy that it does not comment on market rumors.”

Bloombergによれば、かっては360Buyとして知られた、北京に拠点を置くオンライン小売業Jingdongが今年後半に20億ドルをIPOで調達する方向であると伝えられている。Bloombergはこの件を知る人物3人からの情報としている。

Tech in AsiaがJingdongにコメントを求めたところ、広報担当者からは「JD.comはマーケットの噂にはコメントしない企業ポリシー」との返答であった。

Bloomberg’s sources say Jingdong want to list on the US stock market, but Hong Kong is also on the table. Jingdong wants to avoid listing at the same time as its largest competitor, e-commerce titan Alibaba, which is also expected to go down as one of the biggest IPOs in financial history sometime this year.

Rumors of a potential IPO for Jingdong first surfaced back in 2011, when the company’s owner mentioned it might happen in 2013 or later.

While Alibaba is the largest e-commerce company in China, most of it’s sales are C2C, while Jingdong is a B2C retailer. The company is a trusted store when it comes to buying genuine products, everything from baby formula to iPhones.

In February last year, Saudi Arabian billionaire Prince Alwaleed bought a stake in Jingdong for about $700 million.

Indian condom brand Skore launches mobile app to help you locate pharmacies

Condoms are one of those products that you need when you need, but they’re not always readily available. That’s why Indian condom brand Skore has come out with a location-based Android app.

The new Skore app is the first of its kind in India. It features local maps that help men locate the nearest pharmacist. At present, the mobile app only works in Mumbai and a 100-kilometer radius of India’s financial hub. The app will soon add more cities. Obviously it’s only useful for finding stores that stock this particular brand. For other brands, you’ll have to stick to something like Google Maps to find a pharmacy.

コンドームは必要な時には絶対に必要な製品のひとつであるが、そんな時に必ずしも手元にあるとは限らない。それに着目し、インドのコンドームブランドSkoreは位置情報Androidアプリを発表した。

この新しいSkoreのアプリはこの種のものではインド初であり、最も近い薬局の位置を教えてくれるローカルマップがその特徴である。現時点では、このモバイルアプリはインドの金融ハブであるムンバイとその周辺半径100kmのみが対象となっているが、近々、他の都市もカバーしていく予定である。もちろん、このアプリはこの特定のブランドの在庫がある薬局を見つける場合にのみ役立つのであり、他のブランドを手に入れるためには、Google Mapsなどで薬局を見つけなければならない。

Besides helping you track down a pack of condoms, the app has some rather exotic features. For instance, the app has a feature called Skoring Stances which is based on the Kama Sutra and other Hindu ancient literature on sex practices. It outlines about 100 positions you might like to try with your partner, and even imparts some other useful tips.

For the very shy, the Skore app links to a mobile store where users can buy condoms in secrecy.

Skore’s general marketing manager Vishal Vyas says his brand launched the app to differentiate itself from rival brands, and also to “advocate responsibility” in sexual health.

The Skore app is free for Android in Google Play. A version for iPhone is in the works.

“[Parents want their kids] exposed to this, so it makes it easier for them to make a career choice earlier. We also see many polytechnic and university students coming in because they found it challenging when they directly face programming in college first,” said one of the trainers in an interview with Good Morning Singapore.

The company began offering its classes for kids two years ago, using a specialized program called Simple that allows children to create programs using an easy-to-understand coding language. It plans to promote its courses to schools in the near future.

CyberAgent Ventures puts funding into Vietnamese e-commerce solutions startup DKT

E-commerce continues to be one of Vietnam’s hottest industries as 2014 rolls around. CyberAgent Ventures is announcing an undisclosed round of funding for DKT, an e-commerce solutions company.

Why Hangtot is important and the coming battle with Vat Gia

As I mentioned in my article summing up e-commerce in Vietnam for 2013, 2014 will be a year where the big companies battle each other. Vat Gia is Vietnam’s biggest e-commerce marketplace and arguably one of Vietnam’s more successful startups from the country’s first wave of startups in 2005 and 2006. And Hangtot is about to do battle with Vat Gia.

Hangtotはなぜ重要であり、Va Giaとの戦いになるのか？

ベトナムの2013年のeコマースについて私がまとめた記事で述べたように、2014年は大企業が競い合う年になるであろう。Vat Giaはベトナム最大のeコマースマーケットプレースであり、2005年と2006年のベトナムのスタートアップ第一波の時から、最も成功したスタートアップのひとつであることは間違いない。そして、今、HangtotがVat Giaに戦いを挑もうとしているのである。

With the new funding going straight to Hangtot, that means DKT is looking to be one of the top online marketplaces in Vietnam and unseat Vat Gia. But the difference is the marketplace will leverage on the existing data on merchant websites built on Bizweb.vn. Thus, unlike Vat Gia, which has a huge amount of data (which arguably makes it bloated), Hangtot will have a more concentrated pool of merchants.

At the same time, Vat Gia is entering the e-commerce solutions market with WebBNC, their own version of Bizweb.vn. Both DKT and Vat Gia are coming at each other from opposite directions.

新たな投資をHangtotに直接入れることにより、DKTはベトナムにおけるトップオンラインマーケットプレースのひとつになり、Vat Giaに取って代わろうとしていることを意味する。しかし、HangtotのマーケットプレースはBizwev.vnで作成された小売ウェブサイトの既存データにテコ入れをする予定であることに違いがある。よって、莫大なデータを所有し、おそらくさらなる拡大を目指すVat Giaと異なり、Hangtotはより小売業のプールを集中させた形となっている。

Why did CyberAgent invest?

CyberAngent’s investment in DKT is interesting for two reasons. First, it follows CyberAgent’s consistent interest in e-commerce in the Southeast Asia (the firm recently raised another round for Tiki.vn). Second, CyberAgent also invested in Vat Gia in 2009. This means that CyberAgent is funding two competitors.

According to Nguyen Hieu Linh, the leading investment manager behind the DKT deal, there were three reasons for the funding:

Bilna.com, an Indonesian online shop for baby products, today announced securing an undisclosed amount in a new round of investment from existing investors Cyber Agent Ventures (CAV) and East Ventures, and new investors DG Incubation (DGI), TMS Entertainment (TMS) and Golden Gate Ventures. New app wants you to see the big picture, brings Instagram to iPad

Instagram is big in Asia. It’s even bigger in Thailand. The number one most Instagrammed spot in the world is Siam Paragon mall in Bangkok.
