Gates is following in the philanthropic footsteps of American tycoons such as Henry Ford, John D. Then there are the investments. Gates is best known for co-founding Microsoft, but he also founded Corbis, a very successful digital art and photography archive. WorldCosplay: A Multi-lingual Cosplay Community for the World from Japan

Popular animation and vocaloid characters are a part of Japanese culture, and even outside of Japan cosplay is wildly popular. And a new website called WorldCosplay aims to capitalize on that popularity. It’s a multi-lingual cosplay community that allows users to submit their own cosplay pictures. The site is provided in 12 different languages including English, Spanish, French, Italian, Korean and more.

It was pre-launched [1] in late December, and since then it has attracted 8,500 registered users and there have been over 60,000 cosplay pictures submitted.

人気アニメやボーカロイドキャラクターは日本文化の１つであり、日本国外でもコスプレは人気を博している。更にその人気に乗じて「WorldCosplay」という新たなサイトが登場した。ユーザーは、このコスプレミュニティで自分のコスプレ写真を投稿できる。サイトは多言語で、使用言語は英語、スペイン語、フランス語、イタリア語、韓国語等の12言語。

Currently in a beta phase, WorldCosplay is a sister site to Japan’s most popular cosplay community “Cure,” which has been active since 2001. As cosplay became a phenomenon not just amongst Japanese but all around the world, Cure opened an English website back in 2008. The number of English-speaking registered users has exceeded 20,000, leading to the release of WorldCosplay.

現在ベータ版のWorldCosplayは、2001年運営開始の日本で最も人気のあるコスプレコミュニティ「Cure」の姉妹サイトとなっている。コスプレが日本人だけのものでなく世界中で見られるようになり、Cureは2008年に英語サイトを開設した。英語話者の登録が2万を超え、WorldCosplayのサイトオープンへと繋がった。

User can create a WorldCosplay account using their Facebook or Twitter credentials. A user’s ranking is generated by the evaluation of submitted photos, motivating cosplayers to submit high quality photos. There are several ranking criteria such as User Ranking, Character Ranking, Title Ranking, and Tag Ranking. Not surprisingly, the most popular character on WorldCosplay is “Hatsune Miku” (featured in the most recent Google Chrome TV commercial in Japan).

Whatever the limitations of his vision, Gates has been the closest thing the computer industry has to Leonardo Da Vinci, the famous Renaissance futurist whose drawings of fantastical machines became a reality centuries later.

Apart from his collection of sports cars and a multimillion dollar mansion on the outskirts of Seattle, Gates is surprisingly restrained in his spending. But there is of course that glorious exception, his purchase of the Leicester Codex by Leonardo Da Vinci for $30.8 million. There are those that have suggested Gates sees himself as a latter-day Da Vinci - someone whose visions of the future are proved accurate in following centuries.

But there came a point when we realized it was happening faster and was a much deeper phenomenon than had been recognized in our strategy. So as an act of leadership I had to create a sense of crisis, and we spent a couple of months throwing ideas and email around, and we went on some retreats.
