Snapchat now has a friend in Asia with Tencent investment

Snapchat, the now-you-see-it-now-you-don’t messaging app now has a new buddy in Asia. This is because Tencent’s long-rumored investment in Snapchat has already happened, according to TechCrunch citing sources in China and the US.

It was thought that Tencent (HKG:0700), makers of WeChat, would invest in Snapchat in a future funding round, but it turns out that Tencent ploughed some money into Snapchat covertly during the US startup’s recent $60 million round. The larger investors in that round were IVP, General Catalyst, and Benchmark Capital. It’s not clear how much Tencent contributed.

Tencent could help Snapchat – which is often dubbed a sexting app due to its focus on sending photos – expand to Asia. While I’d rate Snapchat’s chances in China as slim to nothing, Tencent has other channels in India and Indonesia that could help Snapchat expand in south and southeast Asia. Tencent is pushing WeChat and its smartphone browser in India, Indonesia, and across Southeast Asia.

Tencent’s own WeChat messaging app now has 272 million active monthly users. Most of those are in China, but the app is slowly expanding overseas as well.

While Bitcoin has been around since 2009, only now has its popularity grown enough that many are now thinking seriously about Bitcoin’s many issues and problems, as well as its future. This has, of course, ensured a mushrooming of startups catering to the use, investment, and regulation of Bitcoin. Asia’s first Bitcoin event, Bitcoin Singapore 2013, held last Friday, tried to look into the opportunities and challenges that glare at the industry.

The event saw participants from all over the Bitcoin industry, from cryptography specialists to lay investors. Below are some of the issues facing Bitcoin today and what startups are doing to solve them.

Key issues: Usability and security

Among end users of Bitcoin, two top problems slowing its adoption are that of usability and security. To ensure greater penetration of Bitcoin among end users and merchants, Hive‘s new wallet for Mac OSX integrates them together, letting users spend their coins conveniently and giving merchants a platform to market to Bitcoin users.

Lack of confidence

Another issue facing Bitcoin users is confidence, both among exchanges and transactions. Current Bitcoin exchanges are plagued with fraud and compliance problems, making users leery of changing their money into Bitcoins. This results in large price swings due to an inefficient market, further eroding confidence in Bitcoin. The solution to this, as envisioned by Bex.io, is in opening the creation of Bitcoin exchanges to trusted, respectable organizations.

The growth in cryptocurrencies

Despite the dent in confidence in Bitcoin caused by the bad press surrounding Silk Road and its potential for crime, the market for Bitcoin is growing day by day. According to Steve Beauregard, CEO of GoCoin, the growth of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin is due in part to the instability of fiat currencies, particularly the US dollar.

Alibaba’s e-wallet nears 100 million users, will be an independent brand

After the dust settled on China’s Single’s Day shop fest, e-commerce titan Alibaba’s third-party payment system Alipay announced its smartphone e-wallet app now has almost 100 million users. Now that it has some momentum, Alibaba will spin off the e-wallet into an independent brand, according to Techweb.

Alipay spokesperson Fan Zhiming says Alipay Wallet will soon launch a large-scale national branding campaign.

Tencent Finally Taps into Online Education Market,with A Live Video Course Feature Added to QQ IM

We have been waiting for Tencent to release an online education service, for the largest Internet company in China by market cap and user base cannot miss out on such a potential market.

The latest version of Tencent’s QQ IM added an Education Mode to the group video chatting service. So a teacher can give live courses to a group of students directly on QQ. Some tools are available for delivering classes such as Power Point support.

As it’s expected that online education will be a huge market in China, it’s not surprising to see any company to take part in. Alibaba launched a marketplace several months ago for teachers or educational organizations to sell live/recorded video courses, other educational materials or tickets to offline classes.

Baidu came up with a digital content marketplace where educational service providers can sell video courses and other educational digital content as well. Chuanke, an independent online course marketplace founded in late 2011, has received funding from Baidu. It is reported that Tencent approached the company earlier for a potential acquisition. There was a wave of investments and acquisitions in the first half of 2013.

But all those big names are latecomers. YY, the rich media communication service provider, launched YY Education in mid-2011. Since YY was operating an online platform for singing shows back then, it was easy to expand to any other sectors that connect performers(teachers) and audiences(students).

YY claims there are 800 educational organizations and 20,000 teachers on its platform that have provided over 100,000 courses. Monthly active users are 6 million.

Two years later, however, YY Education still doesn’t generate any meaningful revenue for its parent company — YY’s major revenue sources are virtual item sales on the singing show platform and online gaming. David Xuelin Li, CEO of YY, said on the latest earnings call, before they could make money from online courses provided by third-party course providers, what they needed to do was help teachers earn as much as they did from offline classes. So that more providers will move online and there’s a possibility to create a business model.

YY, somehow, managed to help a few on its platform to be successful enough to attract more to join. Xswlpx.com, an online computer skill training service offering courses on YY, generated 60 million yuan (a little less than $10 mn) in revenue in 2012 and raised some funding earlier this year.

We have seen many Chinese developers who build smart gadgets raising funds from worldwide-known platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo and selling them to users in developed countries. There are also Chinese companies that offer solutions or sell components to makers from the rest of the world. We seldom see westerns companies that consider China one of their first target markets.

At the moment Bedscales is sold as the Early Bird special for $225. The company charges a $25 additional fee for worldwide shipping. In total that’s more than 1500 yuan. With that much money a Chinese user can buy a Xiaomi smartphone or any other average smartphone made by Chinese brands.

In a market like China where the vast majority haven’t had their first smartphones or just bought their first, there are many products for them to buy before such a set of bedscales, say, smart TV, set-top box, tablet and the like.

Gough said the reason they’d sell it to Chinese is that they would “be manufacturing in China anyway” — it’s the case for so many makers. He expected to sell more in China market by setting up a Chinese-based distribution centre and cutting the price. Or media attention will attract some re-sellers, he adds.
