Encased in a rigid two-piece polycarbonate frame, the Buccaneer sports a minimalist design with no buttons and only a discrete light indicator. This unassuming facade belies its true ability though. Using a fused filament fabrication (FFF) technique for printing, the Buccaneer melts and passes filaments of polylactic acid (PLA) through a precision nozzle, with the movement of the nozzle depositing plastic in layers indistinguishable to the naked eye. This has led to it being able to print continuously for more than 200 hours, as well as reach a vertical printing resolution as high as 85 microns.

Another feature of the Buccaneer is its heated printing platform and a full-metal unibody extruder, which together with an auto-calibration functionality, allows for a smooth filament flow and precisely positioning of the printing platform for higher print quality. To communicate with devices such as personal computers, tablets, and smartphones, the printer boasts both WiFi and mobile capabilities, letting it execute print jobs just like any network-enabled paper printer.

Not content with just the Buccaneer, Pirate3D also has other plans. It is going to build a repository of designs, which users can download and print easily. Additionally, it is going to develop a modelling program for users to create their own designs easily.

“We’re developing a 3D printing cloud service to enable our users to seamlessly download and print models in one click,” said Chang.

The final iteration of the first Buccaneer is currently available for pre-order at US$497 on the company’s website. It will start selling in Japan and Korea from June 2014.

Senior citizen app Tapestry acquires California-based ConnectAround

The Australian startup app has acquired California-based social network for active living retirement communities at an undisclosed amount

Australian startup application Tapestry, which is targeted at senior citizens, has acquired California-based ConnectAround, a social network designed for active living retirement communities. The deal has taken place at an undisclosed amount.

Post the acquisition, ConnectAround Co-Founder Marcie Rogo, will assume the role of Head of Operations for Tapestry in the US.

Andrew Dowling, CEO, Tapestry said, “Integration with ConnectAround will allow us to benefit from its unique understanding of retirement community needs, as well as provide a platform for Tapestry’s ongoing expansion into the US market.”

With the acquisition, Tapestry expands from private senior users into the aged care sector, and gets a wider scope in the US market. At the same time, ConnectAround will get the opportunity to leverage Tapestry’s app offerings.

ConnectAround was founded in 2011 as the first private social network connecting residents of active retirement living communities, with a well established user base in Los Angeles, San Francisco and the Bay Area.

Chinese Mobile Internet Users Reached 500 million as of 2013: CNNIC Report

Chinese Internet users reached 618 million as of December 2013 with 53.58 million more added in the year, according to China Internet Development Report released today by CNNIC.

The Internet penetration rate is 45.8%, with a 3.7% increase from one year ago. 28.6% of Internet users (177 million) and 40% of the newly added (21.01 million) are in rural areas.

Mobile Internet users reached 500 million, a 19% increase. That’s 80.09 million users that began connecting to the Internet through mobile devices in 2013.

69.7% of Internet users get online through desktop and 44.1% through laptop. Both saw slight decreases.

93.1% of enterprises have adopted computers and 83.2% use the Internet. 23.5% businesses sell products online, 26.8% make purchases online and 20.9% do online marketing.

There were 3.2 million Chinese websites as of 2013, with 19.4% in increase.

Now LeTV has established an ideal model. It has third-party or self-produced videos. LeTV UI, a custom Android system, is for users of set-top boxes or smart TVs to access online videos or all kinds of apps. Like the newly emerged hardware makers, LeTV sells all the hardware online, counting on pre-orders to suggest demand.

When it comes to smart TV, of all the TV makers in China, traditional or new, Xiaomi is considered LeTV’s direct competitor. Xiaomi released its first smart TV four months ago. As Xiaomi doesn’t own a video platform, it is rumored that the company is taking a stake in Xunlei Kankan, one of the major video streaming services in China. Different from LeTV, Xiaomi doesn’t charge a fee for streaming online videos or other services while LeTV charges an annual fee.

The first LeTV smart TV was one of the first of this kind in China, so the company hoped to collect fees like cable TV subscriptions have been doing. But companies like Xiaomi, founded by a bunch of Internet service developers, don’t think charging end-users is a good idea.

But the company requires customers to pay for a two-year subscription instead of the one-year prior to the price adjustment. The latest model Max 70 also requires a two-year subscription. Priced at 8999 yuan (roughly $1500), LeTV is confident it’s way lower a price than its peers of the same screen size or similar specs.

But for sure Tencent is of the most powerful platforms. Shikonglieren, a third-party mobile game on WeChat is performing well that has made 25 million yuan in monthly sales.

To have good apps get on board, Tencent plans to go very far . The company had established startup working spaces in Beijing, Chengdu and Wuhan as of November 2013. A few more will be open in 2014 in more cities. Financial consulting or even IPO consulting is included in the services they’d like to offer. And everything is for FREE. The company didn’t disclose whether they’d take stakes in those mobile startups.

Singapore plans to introduce programming lessons in public schools to boost the economy

The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), a government agency in charge of the country’s internet industry, is planning to progressively introduce software programming classes into public schools, giving students an opportunity to write code in a classroom setting. The news was first reported on Good Morning Singapore in mandarin yesterday.

Given the rapidly changing nature of the technology industry, the agency hopes to roll out these classes quickly in the next few months with the ultimate aim of keeping the Singapore economy at the top.

シンガポールでインターネット産業を管轄している政府機関 Infocomm Development Authority(IDA)は、公立学校教育にソフトウェアプログラミングの授業を積極的に導入し、生徒に授業の場でコードを書く機会を与える計画である。このニュースは昨日のGood Morning Singapore(中国語)で報じられた。

“Infocomm technology is getting to be more pervasive, and we all recognize that it’s going to be a strategic catalyst for [Singapore’s] competitive advantage,” said James Kang, assistant chief executive of the government chief information office at IDA.

To be sure, topics like programming and 3D printing are already available in some schools as extra-curricular activities with IDA’s help, so it’s unclear how these classes will differ from previous initiatives.

The agency has told Tech in Asia it is currently in exploratory talks with the Ministry of Education about how to introduce programming to students, so it does not know if the topic will become part of the curriculum or remain an extra-curricular activity.

According to the Straits Times, about 1,500 students have been taught “advanced computing concepts” through IDA’s school programs. At Radin Mas Primary School, Nan Chiau High, and Greenview Secondary School, students are taught to use 3D design software and 3D printers to create prototypes.

Meanwhile, Hwa Chong Institution and Dunman High have introduced programming to teenagers, with Dunman exposing students to Python, a popular language for creating web apps as well as statistical and scientific research.

Straits Times紙によれば、約1,500名の生徒がIDAの学校プログラムで「上級コンピュータコンセプト」の授業を受けた。Radin Mas小学校、Nan Chiau高校、Greenviewセカンダリースクールでは3D設計ソフトウェアや3Dプリンターを使ってプロトタイプを作る授業が行われた。

一方、Hwa Chong InstitutionやDunman高校では、ティーンエイジャーにプログラミングを紹介した。このうちDunmanでは、ウェブアプリの作成や統計・科学的リサーチ用の人気のある言語であるPythonを教えた。

These schools all belong to the middle-to-upper tier in Singapore’s public education system – lauded as among the world’s best in math and science – with Hwa Chong in particular representing an elite school. As technical skills increasingly become a pathway to sustainable careers, it is hoped that IDA can equalize the field by giving students from less prestigious schools more opportunities to pick up programming.

Private classes are available

Private education providers have proliferated in Singapore, offering a variety of workshops ranging from 3D printing to hardware tinkering to app creation – which has unfortunately been touted as the next great internet marketing scheme.

According to private IT education vendor Kore Infotech, more parents are recognizing the value of technical competency in the modern economy, and they want their kids to build a foundation at an early age. For the company, this has resulted in an increase in sign-ups for classes at a 30 percent annual rate in the past two years.
