What would a budget or mid-range iPhone mini look like with a radical new vision of iOS 7 installed on it, fronted by that skeuomorph-hating design perfectionist, Jony Ive?

Martin Hajek wanted to know, so he created a new budget iPhone concept that features bighter colors, a smaller screen, and a plastic backshell inspired by the iPad mini, then “installed” Dámaso Benítez’ “really nice concept” of how Jony Ive might flatten iOS 7.

On my part, I seriously doubt iOS 7 will look anything like this: Ive’s sense of design sophistication is not going to have him making app icons that look as if they would be right at home in a preschoolers sticker book. But it’s a nice concept none the less.

iPhone 5S To Get Sapphire Crystal Home Button With Fingerprint Sensor

The iPhone 5S could come with a sapphire crystal capacitive touch home button that incorporates a new fingerprint sensor, according to supply chain sources in Taiwan.

Apple is expected to do away with the traditional physical home button, which has long been one of the most unreliable components on iOS devices. It’s thought that using sapphire crystal, which has a hardness second only to diamond, will prevent the button from getting scratched and ruining the fingerprint sensor.

台湾のサプライチェーン筋の情報によるとiPhone 5Sには指紋センサーが組み込まれたサファイアクリスタル静電容量方式タッチスクリーン ホームボタンが装備される可能性があるということです。

Appleは従来型の物理的なホームボタンをなくすと見られています。以前よりホームボタンはiOSデバイスに使用されている部品の中で最も信頼性が低いものの一つでした。ダイヤモンドの次に硬いサファイアクリスタルを使用することでボタンに傷が付くのや指紋センサーが壊れるのを防ぐことができます。

This wouldn’t be the first time Apple has used sapphire crystal in an iPhone. The iPhone 5 has a sapphire crystal camera lens on its back, which Apple chose to try to prevent scratches from ruining your photos.

And according to Taiwanese website TechNews, which claims to have been speaking to sources in Apple’s supply chain, the Cupertino company will choose the same material for the iPhone 5S’s home button.

Appleのサプライチェーンの情報筋から話を聞いたと主張する台湾のウェブサイトTechNewsは、AppleがiPhone 5Sのホームボタン用に同じ素材を選択するだろうと報じています。

But it won’t be a physical button like existing iOS devices. They insist Apple will employ a capacitive touch home button for the first time with the iPhone 5S, eliminating one of the most unreliable components in an iOS device (the physical home button has a tendency to fail after long periods of use).

Not only will it be a capacitive touch button, but it’ll also incorporate a fingerprint sensor, the sources claim. We’ve been hearing for many months that Apple will add fingerprint sensing technology to the iPhone 5S, following its acquisition of AuthenTec last year.

As for the handset’s release date, TechNews reports that it’ll arrive in August or September, alongside a plastic low-cost iPhone.

COMPUTER VIRUS AND MALICIOUS CODE PROTECTION

• Enable anti-virus protection or malicious code detection to check all incoming Internet traffic, and automatically clean for computer viruses and malicious codes.
• The gateway should be configured to stop traffic with malicious content, quarantine / drop them, and create audit logs for future investigation.
• Virus signature and malicious code definition should be updated regularly. The update should be configured as automatic and update frequency should be at least on daily basis.
• If automatic update is not possible (e.g. mobile devices which are often not attached to networks), update should be done manually at least once a week.

My Dentist Pal is Revolutionizing the Dentist Industry in The Philippines

Going to the dentist probably does not rate very high on most people’s favorite daily activities; it most definitely does not on mine. There’s really very little fun or enjoyment to be found in a visit to your dentist, more often than not it’s painful and terrifying. So you really have to wonder, what does a dental-themed startup have to offer to change that? Enter My Dentist Pal.

歯医者に行くのが好きだという人はおそらくほとんどいないだろう。もちろん筆者もだ。歯医者行って楽しいということはまずないだろう。たいていの場合、痛くて恐ろしいものだ。これを変えるために歯科関連のスタートアップはいったい何をしなければならないのだろうか？そこでMy Dentist Palの登場だ。

Founded in January of 2012, by Cloudwalk Digital, My Dentist Pal is a web-based tool for dentists that aims to digitize the dental practice. It basically allows dentists to access patient records, tooth charting, and even simple accounting, to find out who’s paid and who hasn’t, from anywhere. Patients can get updated on their next dental appointment, or even find the location of the nearest dentist.

According to Cloudwalk Digital’s Marc Medina:

Subscription is fast and easy enough; it’s just your usual fill-in-the-blanks registration form. And at the moment it’s free too, as the site currently relies on ad placement to make money. Unfortunately, the site advertises that it’s intended to be used by both dentists and patients, subscription appears to be for dentists only. Plus, the link to the How It Works PDF appears to be broken as well.

Website management aside, the services listing is robust (for dentists at least). You’ve got your Dashboard, your homepage for appointments, messages, news, etc. You can Add Patients to your Patient List. You can fill in an Address Book as well, for home visits perhaps? There’s a Scheduler, as well as access to Blogging and Messaging. Finally, you can get access to Accounting, to find out which patients still need to pay up.

My Dentist Pal is currently available to local dentists, though the team does have plans to take their approach to foreign shores.

Again, from Marc Medina:

”Initially, our target market is the dentists from the Philippines. But when we release our mobile app this year, we want to also target dentists globally.”

Being a startup in the Philippines can be tough, no doubt about that. Being a startup built around the dental industry, which is not exactly considered a necessity in the country, has to be downright tough as nails. So can the founders of My Dentist Pal offer any words of advice to other would-be online dentists?

” If you’re a startup in the Philippines expect to self-fund for a longer than usual because of the limited funds. The number of startups is absolutely bigger than number of angels willing to seed.”

Java Applet

Java applet is a program that is usually embedded in a web page. Client browsers may automatically download Java applets for execution. Nevertheless, Java system restricts its applets to a set of safe actions known as “sandboxing” making them difficult to damage the file system or the boot sector of a client computer. When developing Java applets, developers should design and restrict access of Java applets to designated directories, files and OS properties.
The following areas should also be considered at the client side where Java applets will be running:

• Tighten the security controls on Java's compilers, interpreters and generators.

WEB SERVER CONFIGURATION AND ADMINISTRATION

Web server software is an application running on a host system, often facing the Internet, to provide information or web services to users. The below designs and configurations are important for deploying a secure web server.

ウェブサーバーの設定および管理

• The web server should be configured not to start up any SMTP service allowing external users to relay mails through the web server.

ROUTERS

Routers are used to connect two or more networks. They can filter traffic and restrict access to servers or network components, similar to the application proxies.
The following guidelines should be observed and followed when configuring and managing routers in the network:
• Similar to firewall, routers should be properly configured to deny all traffic by default, and to allow only permitted traffic to go through. Source routing should be disabled unless for troubleshooting.
• Logging, backup and other administrative tasks should be properly performed, similar to those for firewall.
• Testing should be done thoroughly before live implementation.

Vietnamese Startup Triip Crowdsources For the Best Tour Guides in Asia

I’m a big fan of collaborative consumption startups like Airbnb, Zipcar, and Coursera because of their disruptive potential in incumbent markets – and especially the potential to open up new experiences for consumers. Triip is one such company in the tourism space, allowing anybody with a tour idea to create their own package and sell to interested tourists.

ベトナムのスタートアップTriipはアジアの最高のツアーガイドをクラウドソースする

筆者はAirbnb、Zipcar、Courseraなどの協調的消費というコンセプトをベースにしたスタートアップがとても気に入っている。それが既存の市場に革新をもたらす可能性を持っており、何より消費者に新しい体験をもたらす可能性を持っているからだ。Triipは旅行分野におけるそうした企業の一つだ。旅行に関するアイディアがあれば誰でも独自のパッケージを作り興味のある旅行者に販売することができる。

How Triip began

The idea actually started with Lam Ha, one of the Triip co-founders, back when she was in university and started a student group called Saigon Hotpot. The group of English-savvy students would take tourists around town and show them the significant sights around Ho Chi Minh city while also getting a chance to practice English with foreigners. The students did it pro-bono and within four years it shot up to the top spot of things to do on Tripadvisor. After university, slowly the idea of turning this into a viable business model made more sense.

With its team of nine – five of them being co-founders – they’ve slowly built up Triip into its current beta version. Today, Triip has approved 86 total tours. But being in beta and with no spending on marketing so far, only seven people have taken tours so far. This will certainly change when Triip goes out of beta in June as well as releases an iPhone app.
