I have always been struck by the incredible variety of the graphic designs Bruno Munari donated to the CSAC and the remarkable way they use signs and symbols to touch on unusual,often profoundly innovative forms of communication. As readers flick back through these pages I would like them to reflect on the types of graphic writing Munari uses,regardless of the propose of the writing itself. I would like to make something clear right away: Munari experiments freely with his own writing styles in all kinds of realms, so he does not use them as specific solutions but as a range of solutions, regardless of their intended function.

Two Chinese Search Engines with Siri Envy Launch Their Own Voice Assistants

When you have a mobile voice assistant – like Apple’s Siri or Google Now – you don’t need to do anything so laborious as visit a search engine homepage and tap in some words. Chinese search engines don’t want to be left behind by this new tech, and so both Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) and Sogou this month launched their own Siri-like efforts.

The two apps – Baidu Voice Assistant and Sogou Voice Assistant – are for Android only, and allow smartphone owners to question and converse with the service in a natural, conversational way. The apps then offer up searches for anything from weather to songs, and get fast answers on things like calculations and friends’ phone numbers.

Baidu Voice Assistant launched yesterday, chasing a few weeks after the debut of the new app from Sohu-run (NASDAQ:SOHU) Sogou. Baidu is the top search engine in China, and Sogou is the third-largest with a more marginal 7.83 percent market share.

In terms of the UI, both apps look more like Google Now than Apple’s own creation, with the running theme of cards holding the information you’re looking for. By talking to the voice assistants and saying “Beijing weather,” this is what’s shown by Baidu (left) and Sogou (right):

Other rivals in this Chinese voice assistant field include the specialist firm iFlyTek, in which China Mobile recently bought a 15 percent stake.

Recently, we continued the global expansion of Catalyst into Asia by signing up a few leading web-savvy companies like Stepcase, FilmSkout.com and InfiniteCloset.com, and the first conversations I’ve had with these small businesses are exactly the same as the conversations I have with every other small business I’ve ever mentored. Questions like, “How can we make sure our business is successful?” and “What should we know about taking investments in our business?” aren’t exclusive to a single region or type of business, so I thought I’d take a moment to share four of the biggest survival tips that I think every startup needs to know:

1. The pieces will make the whole successful. Look at your co-founders and early employees as the missing pieces of your business’s puzzle. Your founding team shapes who you are as a company, so your collective strengths need to be both diverse and compatible. As an individual founder, you cannot possibly manage all the different facets of running a business. If accounting is not your strength, bring in someone trustworthy to handle finances. If you’re less business-savvy than the rest, focus on the technical aspect of your product and hire someone else to handle business development.

Which Asian Tech Companies are Patenting Innovations?

IEEE Spectrum has released its yearly “patent power” scorecard, a rundown of the which companies had the most impressive US patent portfolio over the last year. The scoring is complicated, and the fact that it’s limited to US patents means that only major Asian multinationals are really capable of competing strongly enough to make the list, but even so, it’s worth taking a look at to see who is innovating on a global scale from Asia.

In the Communications/Internet Equipment rankings, China’s Huawei is one of the only international companies to even make the rankings, though it clocks in at a relatively lowly number 17. Remarkably, the company filed 415 patents in the US this year.

In Communications/Internet Services, there were more Asian players on hand. From Korea SK Telecom made the number 14 spot, and KT Corporation was ranked nineteenth. Japan also had two companies on the list; in the number 15 and 16 slots were NTT and its subsidiary NTT Docomo.

Perhaps tellingly, the computer software category was almost completely dominated by US companies, with Japan’s Sony the only Asian company to rank (and, at number 20, it just barely made the cut).

Computer systems, in contrast, was like a big Asia party, with Asian companies making up nearly half the list. Japan had Fujitsu (number 2) and NEC (number 6), and China had Lenovo at number 7. But the big winner was Taiwan, with Asus (number 8), Micro-star (number 11), Acer (number 19) and Compal Electronics (number 20).

You can check out the full scorecard here for more details (the list for electronics patents will also be of some interest to readers) and for each company’s innovation ranking, but in general, it’s telling that Asian companies are much more dominant in the hardware arena than they are in software. This is not to suggest that Asian software companies aren’t innovating, of course, but since these rankings are based on US-filed patents, it does suggest that they aren’t doing as well globally as their compatriots in the hardware businesses.

I expect that to change fairly quickly though. Given the number of Asian companies in gaming and mobile software especially that are pushing out globally, I expect that in five or ten years’ time, the Software patent rankings could look very different.
