玄奘,唐朝著名的法師,俗名陳褘,西元前六○二年生於河南的儒學世家。祖上世代為官,操守清廉,也因此他出生時家境並不寬裕。
陳褘幼年便聰慧好學。十歲時,他因父親過世而決心出家,於是到二哥剃度的佛寺學習佛法。十三歲時剃度,法號玄奘;此時他已開始研究佛法,之後更四處講經,聲望極高。
玄奘的佛學成就讓世人折服。但也有學者認為他周旋帝王間,有失氣節,不過這並無損於他的貢獻,因為他是中國第一位以雙腳走出胸中世界的高僧。
